For FL Studio 21 users, Image-line (the developers of FL Studio) fixed the issue of hearing yourself; the "EXT" icon next to the Input in the mixer, you can click it and there's an option under "monitor external input" called "Off" and you can see your mic is still working but you no longer hear your voice until after you have recorded. Hope this helps for some artists using FL!

One thing that's worth mentioning for people who don't know: when the waveform of your audio fills all the way up the top and bottom of the clip, it means your audio is clipping (hitting the maximum volume), meaning it's distorting and sounds worse. Good to keep in mind when recording vocals, you ideally never want anything to clip (turn down your mic volume if you can or sing quieter or a bit farther from the mic). Distorted vocals are cool but it's much better to distort them intentionally with cool distortions rather than just a straight hard clip. Also, if you ever see a waveform with flat edges when recording vocals, even if it doesn't reach the ends it's still probably clipping 👍

I use a fruity limiter default on the direct mic input track with a slight noise gate for room noise and make sure your levels aren’t in the red or yellow so to keep things somewhat close together dynamically, I use a 2:1 ratio compressor with a -14 db threshold and then unplug it from the master and just plug it into only the mixer track next to it but arm the dry mic track for recording on the mixer track. Then you can put effects on the send/wet track and hear yourself with effects but still be able to turn it off without the effects recorded into the audio.

nahh bro the higher buffer length helps the cpu process plug ins and effects better. When you're recording crank buffer length all the way down to prioritize your input on the cpu, resulting in lower delay
