How to Recover Deleted Files from a USB Drive on Mac

USB flash drives are a great and comfortable way to transfer and store information. Sadly, too many Mac users still face a problem of accidentally deleting important data or accidentally formatting the USB drive. But what actually happens when files stored on your thumb drive are lost or deleted by mistake and how to get them back? I will show you 3 best ways to get your data back.
TIP: As soon as you realize that data loss has occurred, you should stop using the USB drive.
Way 1. Check the Trash Can
Way 2. Check the Other Trash Cans
Whenever you use an external drive, your Mac creates a bunch of hidden folders starting with a period to help the drive work better with macOS. One of these hidden folders is “.Trashes”
- Enable Hidden Files in macOS Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur
If you’re using macOS Sierra or later, you can view hidden files in Finder by simply using the SHIFT+CMD+. hotkey (that’s the period key).
- If You’re Using an Older OS X Version
You can enable hidden files in Finder by running the following commands in Terminal. Press Command+Space and type “Terminal” to bring it up. At the prompt, paste these two lines in there one at a time, hitting Enter after each line:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
After running these commands, you should be able to see the “.Trashes” folder.
Way 3. Use a Data Recovery Software
Step 1. Download and Install Disk Drill for Mac
Step 2. Run Disk Drill and Select the USB Drive You Want to Scan
Step 3. Select Scanning Mode and Start Scanning your USB Drive
Step 4. Preview Found Files
Step 5. Restore all lost files from a USB Flash Drive

When recovering you need to pay 92€ and not all files will recover, especially videos. This video is an ad more than a tutorial.

Ok, I am praying you are my new hero. I had been searching for a flash drive for the last 2 years that held the contents of my old computer. FINALLY found it this morning, and put it in. It was all intact, pressed the file I needed which was a .mov of my old reel, and when I played it got an error on Quicktime and then all of a sudden, I could not type on my computer (words were not appearing). Tried to put my flash drive in the trash to start again, but it was frozen, so had to restart my laptop. Started it again, and the File folder is listed on the Flash drive, but now all the contents are missing in it (including the one I desperately need!), so I know it must be in the "secret trash." My laptop runs on Mavericks. You said in the video that you were to do a different thing for ones before Sierra - is that strategy the Data Drill? Because it seems on the video that was the second part of the Sierra+. Just want to make before I download Disk Drill to help me. Thank you for this, you have no idea how much this helps, especially in a crazy year. And if it is easier to DM or email me, please let me know.

I tried to down load but wouldnt open. I use El Capitan perhaps this is the problem. I pilled out my flash drive improperly got an error saying i didnt remove it properly. i cant aceess my files.

my usb won't load onto desktop, but I hear it connect to the thinkpad. The computer registers the device but doesn't load onto desktop. I'm assuming in order for this program to work, the device has to mount onto desktop.

Hoping u can help me. I was using my USB flash key on a MacBook Air laptop. Opened a file from the USB key, then suddenly the USB key ejected. So I unplugged the flash key and plugged it back in. I tried to re-open the same file, but it got corrupted. Now that file is gone. Is there any way to fix or recover the corrupted file?

hey. i used to store my images on my sandisk years ago when i had PC. now when i try to open it on my mac all the images shows a black image and says EXEC on them..i can not open any of the images. are they gone? or do you have a tutorial on how to get them back or to be able to open them? or move them to mac? i mean i can't see any of my images i just see a black image saying EXEC on each one of them.

This usually happens if your images have no extension which makes the Mac think they are unix executables which traditionally have no extension. Try adding extensions to some of them (e.g. a .jpeg) and see if you can preview them that way.

Hi, I followed your video but unfortunately it wasn't what I was looking for. So please see if you could help me with my problem: Years ago, when Mac used to call its "Photo app" iPhoto, I had a worth of 5GB of valuable pics and videos, what I did was instead of dragging the files to my external hard drive, I dragged the icon said "iPhoto" and here where my problem started, the folder is showing its contain of 5GB, even at some point I could open the photo individually and read the name I previously gave it, but the photo or video is completely blank. Please help me retrieving my files if you could. PS: since then, I changed my MacBook Air but I kept the non-readable iPhoto folder on my external hard drive!

The period button is located on your keyboard between the < and the ? buttons. As for the command, you may either contact Apple Support for further assistance, or try other methods described in this video.
