How to Recover Deleted Files on Mac: 5 Proven Ways

Need to recover deleted files on your Mac even from an emptied Trash? Here are 5 ways with step-by-step tutorials.

Pro tip: Immediately stop using your Mac computer. As long as the files are not overwritten, there is a good chance that you can recover them.
Method 1: The first place to look is still the Trash Bin
To recover deleted files from Trash on Mac:
1. Open the Trash Bin by clicking on its icon.
2. Search for the file you suspect was deleted.
3. If the file is found, right-click on the file and select the “Put Back” option.
Method 2: Recover deleted files on Mac with Time Machine backup
To restore permanently deleted files on macOS:
Step 1. Connect the device that contains the Time Machine backup.
Step 2. Launch Time Machine.
Step 3. Open a Finder window in the location you last remember seeing the file.
Step 4. Scroll back through Time Machine until the file appears in the Finder window.
Step 5. Select the file and click Restore to recover it.
Method 3: Use Third-Party Data Recovery Software
To recover deleted files on Mac:
Step 1. Launch Disk Drill.
Step 2. Select the disk or partition that contained the lost files.
Step 3. Click the Recover button to start scanning for deleted files.
Step 4: Preview the recoverable files and choose a new location for them.
Step 5: Choose the files you want to restore and click the Recover button.
Tip: You can also use a free data recovery software for Mac like TestDisk.
Method 4: Restore Photos & Multimedia Files on Mac Without Software
Step 1. Open the Photos app and navigate to Recently Deleted.
Step 2. This opens the recently deleted folder where you can attempt image recovery.
Step 3. Select the photos or videos that you want to restore.
Step 4. Click the Recover button to restore the files to their original location.
Method 5: Recover Deleted Files Using Mac Terminal
1. Launch the Terminal application.
2. Enter the cd .Trash command.
3. Type this command: mv xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx is the full filename and extension. Hit Return.
4. Type Quit to exit the Terminal app.
5. Open a Finder window and you should find the recovered data in its original location.
Tip: It is a command line way to recover recently deleted files from your computer.

I deleted 38gigs of videos I ned for court and thought I was deleting the documents folder but it was download folder. I'm broke too and can't afford recovery software, but I don't remember all the names of the video, just that they were deleted from downloads and I held control while deleting the trash to permanently delete them I dont see them in time machine and it was on, its not letting me scroll back except today, but I deleted them today, so I'm lost and now paranoid, what should I do? THIS ACTUALLY WORKS! (I nearly missed my deadline I was crying to find this) *if you replaced a file* If you have a MacBook, go to the file you replaced, go to 'file', then go to 'browse version history) then at the side it'll show times you edited the file and you can choose the one you replaced.

Hey! I used Disk Drill and allowed it to run a deep scan on my Mac's internal hard drive. It came up with all the files currently existing on the drive unfortunately none that were emptied from the trash. /:

Hello, thank you for the video. I have accidentally moved a folder from my MacBook Pro Desktop into the trash and deleted the trash. I have tried Disk Drill 4 (the free version) and when I follow the steps, my trash does not even appear as one of the options to check. The trash bin is empty, I just need the folder back with the contents. I even tried the command method and that did not work. When using Disk Drill, a pop up window appears saying..." There's a chance to find more data. This storage device is locked by Apple's system integrity protection. Disk Drill features a Kernel extension that may be able to search beyond that protection. (Should I activate / allow permission? for this?). Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated.

does disk drill only let you recover files after you downloaded the application? i deleted my files then downloaded disk drill and there's no guarantee recovery option and my file isn't showing up after the recovery scan

I am sorry to hear that your file isn't showing up. If you don't see a preview of a file in the basic version of Disk Drill - it cannot be recovered. The "guarantee recovery" option won't work if you downloaded the application after your files had been deleted. The good news is that you can protect your data going forward. Hi there if you could please help me out. I accidentally went to save a pages document onto my laptop (mac book pro) and accidentally hit the button where it says "would you like to replace this file" (cause it had the same name as another file) and I hit yes not knowing it deleted the document I wanted to save. I have tried all of these methods, and I still could not find the files Backstory: I was arranging folders and files around on my Mac. After I renamed a folder and then created a new folder inside the main folder. When I realized I had the new folder in the wrong place, I tried to move it to the parent folder. I received an error message (can't remember the message now). I attempted to move it again. When I looked in the new folder, all my images were gone. Can you help with this?

I reinstalled High Sierra bec I was having trouble booting up. After I reinstalled I got the set up screen. Does this mean I accidentally erased my hard drive? I used a bootable High Sierra that I purchased off Amazon and the seller recommended that I boot from the installer by pressing the option key. Afterwards I got taken to the set up screen. Hey, i emptied my bin today. And I lost an important folder. So, I tried using disk drill and wondershare Recoverit. Hi there! Sorry to hear about that. The only way to verify your files recoverability is to download Disk Drill Basic, run the scan, and preview the file(s) in question. If you managed to preview the file you needed to recover in a basic version, please email us at help@cleverfiles.com for further assistance. No preview just means that the file might be damaged or corrupt, it can be recovered, but it might need to be repaired.

Thank you so much for your video, but I had lost my wedding all videos 😢😢 The SD card been used tons of time after recording so I found nothing from restoring from the SD, I tried all the methods you provide but none of them worked 😭😭 Disk drill is just restoring small system files and keep giving this message: "As of macOS 10.13 High Sierra,Data Rescue no longer has access to the startup drive due to Apple's System Integrity Protection feature. You solved my problem within the first minute. haha I, very stupidly, erased files before transferring and started freaking out. Yeah me too!! I accidentally deleted a GarageBand project I was working on and can't recover it! Did emailing them help you find your deleted files?

How about overwrittin video from dash cam? Is it possible to recovere?

Hello Leo! If you can remove the memory card and insert it to your computer, you can attempt to recover your files. The only way to verify that your files are recoverable is downloading Disk Drill Basic at www.cleverfiles.com/, running the scan, locating the files in question, and previewing them to verify the content. Previewing means actually clicking the preview (eye) button and seeing your complete files, not just a list of files with the names or the thumbnails. In the case of video files, you will need to display the full video in the Basic Edition with Quick Look to verify the recoverability. @@cleverfiles i did used the stellar data recovery but this was a try out ,which it was advising me to make a payment in order to open it ?but at the same time i was trying to communicate with the stellar online and asked that i will pay but i need to see video first? It was showing the file but it wont let me open and they were saying that the video were corrupted? I will try to do what you advise me, hopefully it will works!

I used cleverfiles (or discdrill )to try and clear out some storage on my mac thought it will just clean some cache and stuff but it ended up deleting every app on my mac now I can't even use safari or chrome to download the app again and restore the deleted files

Can someone see my Google Chrome history after several days with these backup softwares, even if I had deleted all the search activity and passwords? I quit from a workplace, and I deleted all the activities from that computer which had neither Time Machine nor iCloud backups.

So sorry to hear about that. Deep Scan works by reconstructing files and can only work with certain types of files (this is a limitation of the files themselves). @@cleverfiles what happened to me is that I downloaded mods and then my game felt weird and I deleted every Minecraft file and re installed but im playing it and I don't have my world again
