How to Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone (5 Ways)

Way #1: Use Your iCloud Backup to Recover Deleted Text Messages.
Important note: Be careful ❗️ This method requires you to restore your iPhone to its factory settings. If that sounds like too much of a hassle to you, we recommend you check out the other solutions further in this video.
Steps to recover:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Go to General and choose the Reset option.
3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings and confirm your choice by clicking the Erase Now button.
4. Follow your phone’s instructions until you see the Apps & Data page.
5. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
6. Sign in to iCloud.
7. Choose the most recent backup that contains the deleted text messages from the list of available iCloud backups.
8. Wait for the recovery process to finish.
Way #2: Selectively Retrieve Deleted Text Messages from a Backup.
In some territories, text messages are selectively backed up to iCloud, just like photos and calendar appointments. iPhone users in the supported territories can read text messages from any device by signing in to icloud.com.
If you're among the lucky ones, you need to do the following:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name and select iCloud.
3. Turn off Text Messages and select Keep on My iPhone.
4. Turn Text Messages back on and select the Merge option.
5. Wait for the deleted text messages to download to your iPhone.
Solution #3: Retrieve Deleted Text Messages from a Finder Backup (macOS Catalina or newer).
Hopefully, you’ve been regularly backing up your iPhone to your computer. If that’s the case, you can now retrieve all deleted text messages using iTunes.
So, the steps are:
1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
2. Launch Finder and select your iPhone under Locations.
3. Click the Restore Backup button in the General tab.
4. Pick the most relevant backup.
5. Enter your password if asked and click Restore.
Way #4: Use Data Recovery Software to Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone.
There's a very high chance you didn't have a backup. But don’t worry, there’s a good chance that you’ll still be able to get them back, but only if you don’t hesitate too much. A data recovery application like Disk Drill for Mac can find deleted and lost text messages on your iPhone and recover them for you with a few clicks.
So, the steps are:
1. Download and install Disk Drill from the official www.cleverfile... website.
2. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
3. Launch Disk Drill and initialize a free scan by clicking the Recover button next to your iPhone.
4. Go through and preview the deleted and existing text messages.
5. Select the ones you want to undelete.
6. Click the Recover button and get your texts back.
Way #5: Contact Your Carrier and Ask for Help.
Some (but certainly not most) carriers allow their customers to recover deleted texts from online account management portals.

Can you go into the backup without putting it back on the iPad in order to retrieve the old messages? I unfortunately had auto delete after a year on my old iPad and it deleted all of my old icloud messages that have no backup except for the one on my computer…

Thank you so much. I never deleted any of my text messages so don’t know why they suddenly disappeared. The only thing I did to my iPhone recently, was an iOS 14.4.2 software update. Your 2nd set of instructions appears to have done the job and I seem to have recouped the majority if not all my missing text messages. Thanks again 🥰

There is no way to recover anything from a factory reset iPhone. So, if you need some information, it's better to back it up.

Thanks for commenting! You can use Disk Drill for Mac to attempt to recover data from an iOS device. Disk Drill for Windows and Media Recovery version does not have this feature yet. Please mind, that Disk Drill can't be installed on a phone or a tablet, you need to have a Mac computer. My boyfriend who was my everything, passed away very unexpectedly a year ago and I accidentally deleted our text thread over the past 5 years with pictures as well 😭 I didn’t know with every backup the old one gets overwritten by the new one, so the backup with the texts is gone.... it’s been a year and I don’t know if it’s even possible anymore. I want more than anything to get them back but I’m kinda scared to use any of the recovery tools because I don’t my phone to get a virus or be damaged :/ Any advice if possible?

I did number 2. It did download but I saw the message that it was downloading. I turned it back on. The message disappeared. So I turned it back on. Still messages didn’t dl so I did the restore back up method. Unfortunately that thread didn’t reappear?! Have I deleted them for good?😩

You can download Disk Drill and scan your phone. you MUST PREVIEW file to be sure it's recoverable - just seeing the filename does not guarantee that it is recoverable.

Hi, I hope you can help. Here is the situation. I have a text message conversation that I need to retrieve off an lost iPhone. I have tried app Decipher, iCloud and iTunes, however, the lost phone had not been backed up to iTunes and I apparently did not have the messages toggled on for iCloud back up. I have not attempted to reach out to my carrier yet. Do you have any other suggestions of how to possibly recover this text conversation? Or is my last option going to be contacting my carrier?

Ii just did the full restore and it worked. Sign into icloud from your laptop to view the last time the phone was backed up. I only lost the messages from last night at 10pm till today at noon because I chose last nights back-up

Thank u so much .... I accidentally deleted a conversation and wanted backup for only messages . I have turn on backup for limited apps to save iCloud space and resetting and backing up to last restore would result in losing the unsaved things. Thank you . You are my hero!!

Thank you so very much. The first option worked for me. I looked at a different video for same issue and I would have to do so many steps and download games and play them for 30 seconds to download an app that would pull my old messages. I just had no time for that. This is a really adult and mature way to go about it so thanks again. Blessings to you!!!

Also I checked on my messages backup to see if it was set to on and it was set to off. Would I still be able to get back messages from a backup even tho the message backup was set to off ?

No, only the Mac version of Disk Drill can recover data from iPhones.

No, sorry. iPhone recovery is only available on Mac computers with Disk Drill.

I appreciate your video/instructions; but, it did not work for me. I deleted an entire string of text messaged between my sister and I and I used the restore from iCloud and the messages did not appear. I deleted the texts on 04/01/2021 and the only other back-up date in my iCloud was 03/30; so, I chose that one and it appears everything is still there from when I erased and restored.

After you clicked disable and download messages. Did you have to wait a certain time? It didn’t say if it was finished or not and then can’t find messages anywhere. After you did step 2 were the messages in your texts or in a different area?

I had the same situation--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I was in a 5 year relationship with my ex and we had wonderful years and so many happy memories. Unfortunately at the end o the relationship I started to notice a lot of Thing changes with him. I had many suspicions that he was cheating on me . She never admitted to it and that’s the worst part , but he decided to end our relationship saying he didn’t love me anymore and he didn’t want us to ever go back. Now she says she’s trying to move on and I’m sure it’s with the guy she was cheating on me with. I just have that gut feeling. It’s a very tough time for me right now because our anniversary is tomorrow and I can’t stop thinking about our relationship. I’m having a rough time motivating myself .. If you do not have physical access to the device, the only option to restore your messages is pulling them from the iCloud Backup, but only if your messages were synchronized to the cloud.
