Sharing my journey of how I went from a dark, stubborn red to light blonde.
___
BREAKING DOWN THE PROCESS:
Please keep in mind that you may need to tweak a few things depending on how you went red, the condition of your hair, how porous it is, etc. Also, you can prevent a lot of damage by spreading each step out over a longer period of time. From start to finish, I did this in about 5 days, but I would suggest not doing it any quicker than that, and deep condition A LOT between each step!
STEP 1:
Products needed:
Color Oops www.amazon.com/...
- Fade out as much red as you can by washing in hot water with either clarifying shampoo, Dawn dish soap, Head&Shoulders, etc. I suggest doing this as many times as you can.
- Use a color remover. I used Color Oops. I did this twice, but the second time didn't seem to make much of a difference and just left my hair feeling extra dry.
- Deep condition
STEP 2:
Products needed:
Ion High Lift Color (Cool Blonde) www.sallybeauty...
30 Volume Developer www.sallybeauty...
- Mix high lift color and developer (1 to 2 ratio)
- Apply to midshaft and ends. Keep massaging in product and watch for color change. Leave on for about 25 minutes.
- Apply to roots. Leave on for additional 20 minutes. Shampoo & Condition.
- Deep condition
STEP 3:
Products needed:
Lightening Powder www.sallybeauty...
30 Volume Developer www.sallybeauty...
Shampoo of your choice (make sure it isn't a toning shampoo!)
- Mix 1 part lightener with 1 part developer with 1 part shampoo
- Apply all over. Keep massaging and watch color change.
- Rinse out as soon as the color is gone. (I left it on for about 30 minutes).
- Shampoo and deep condition
Additional products you may need:
Mixing Bowl www.sallybeauty...
Tint Brush www.sallybeauty...
Gloves www.sallybeauty...
Processing Cap www.sallybeauty...
After-Color Treatment (highly recommend!!) www.sallybeauty...
Remember, results may vary. I suggest taking it one step at a time and make adjustments where necessary.

I have been a hairdresser for 25 years, and I have to commend you for taking on such a big project. Mostly, I have to say that you did very good research and you did everything correctly. I think this video will really help a lot of people. You are 100% correct in that bleach will drive "direct dyes" farther into the hair. Well done!! Love the blonde!!

@@samstokes3968 when you bleach your hair you open up the hair follicle to remove any natural color in it, but if there is already color on top the bleach will open up the cuticle and in return the color will deposit even further into your hair.

I know this was posted years ago. But I'd suggest using maximum strength color oops, and when you wash it out you're supposed to shampoo like 5 times, that's what helps remove the red. I used it, and I had no red left in my hair. Just for anyone wondering.

I just used color oops. Last time I bleached my hair was about 2 years ago. 8 months ago I dyed it red. I never touched it up because I knew shortly after I'd want to go back to blond. So after 8 months it was very dull with about 4 inches of roots grown in. After using color oops 1 time - the red was out. It was brassy, but no more red. It also DID NOT dry my hair out at all. That being said, my hair was pretty healthy from not touching it &using coconut oil &I really do believe that only washing my hair 3 times a week really helped my natural oils help my hair strengthen.

The Aphogee 2-step hair treatment works wonders for damaged hair. I use it when my hair feels spongy. Justy make sure not to wash it out.Only rinse it out. Follow the bottle directions to the t. Aphogee takes time, since you have to blowdry it in until your hair gets hard and dry.But it works. GFor seriously damaged hair, use once or twice in a row and you will notice a huge difference. My ends were stretching and breaking off before the treatment, then after the treatment they werent stretching anymore. Literally saved my hair.A large bottle is AT Sallys for about 25 dollars and will last a long time.each application lasts 6 weeks. But when my hair is very badly damaged,I personally use it every day for 2 or 3 days and hair ends up ,ike it was before I bleached it. Or close to it.

I have colored my hair for over 12 years with so many colors. When going from red to blonde, do not expect it to be an overnight process. I recommend if you are going for that goal, go to a salon. However you are better off transitioning from Red to Brown, Light Brown to Blonde. From what i see in this video, you did too much developing and processing. I am surprised your hair isn't damaged.

I am licensed and I just want to say by my experience if you have warm tones definitely get color oops works great! But if you have any bright colors get color off from Sally’s definitely works now the more vibrant it is it’s harder, so if you need to do it a second Time do so! It comes with a hair mask and a great one to. It’s pretty small tho. After you do that your hair is still going to have a staining color DO NOT BLEACH. Get dish soap purple shampoo and baking soda it works so good!! It gives your hair that icy blonde now I had to do the soap method about 3 times but I used permanent so that’s why. If you use SPLOT this will be so much harder. After that just bleach it one time and spot bleach it then you will have an icy blonde!

Very nervous about my big hairdo undertaking, but appreciate the tutorial! You verified a lot of the info that I was finding on my own... my biggest concern was using color remover and then a bleach process, prior to dying with semi perm fashion color. I'm starting with undamaged hair, removing sort of a natural auburn brown permanent dye with color remover, then after the auburn red is gone, planning to balyage my ends and some midshaft with 20 developer and Blacklight lightening cream to lighten my naturally mid blonde to mid brown hair a few levels. Then once those areas are lighter blonde, applying a semi perm teal color. I did get a Bond Angel treatment to use with the color remover and bleach processes, as well as between and after... its similar to Oliplex, basically limits the damage from drying processes.. Crossing fingers! And when in doubt, if it goes wonky, straight to the hairdresser. lol Your blonde came out great, btw.

Ok, As a professional, let me just say that no matter what you do before going into a salon chances are you will make your bill higher. Changing hair colors is already considered color correction, and if you happen to use the wrong product, you can make the process more difficult, and cause yourself to pay much more than you would have, had you just went to a salon in the first place. Any time you put a developer on your hair, you are opening the cuticle. This is what causes that spongy feeling. If you aren't careful about the products you use, you can overprocess your hair, making impossible to color or style your hair. Even a deep conditioning can't fix over processing...

How much would it cost to bleach my hair to a level 9 at a salon? I have medium length hair not too thick, but I went a crimson red about 6 weeks ago. It's faded significantly. I used some color removing crystals that you mix with warm water and then dish soap to wash it out and now it's a golden blond. But oddly, my roots are red! I don't know why!! Before I went red my hair was a mint green that was the result of faded teal. I change my hair color frequently but I just hate the red and I know it's hard to get out. Instead of frying my hair and doing at home bleachings I want to have a professional help me! I just don't know how much it would cost. (I'm talking about a regular hair salon not a fancy high priced one.)
@Cassalinaa
@Cassalinaa 9 жыл бұрын
***** that's probably going to depend on the specific salon you end up going to, and also where it is that you live. I'd call a few of the ones around you and ask. Most likely they will need to see your hair in person. Maybe not.. but my friends mom runs a salon and she always says she can't give a price until she sees what she's working with. Hope that helps.

***** it's great that you managed to strip the color without damage (or too much of it.) be careful when dying your hair often because your hair can only take so much. yes, a stylist needs to see the hair in order to give a proper consultation and price quote. I was able to bring jet black hair (10 years of hair dye) to almost white while I was in beauty school, but the process took all day, and a lot of hair had to be cut to remove the over-processed part that wouldn't lift past fiery red... Luckily the client wanted a very short cut to begin with. If you like changing your look often, why not opt for keeping your hair at a lever 10 or higher and use temporary colors to add bold colors. less damage and you can be as versatile with your hair as you can be with your wardrobe

color oops says on the box it is not for direct dyes. that is why it didn't achieve the desired lift. even after 2 uses. you need a direct dye lifter as that step instead. starting off with the healthiest hair possible always gives the healthiest results. it's pretty crucial to drag out that washing and deep conditioning in the beginning. wear hats, your hair up, try to style it to conceal the fading as you use really warm water and maybe even a bit of baking soda mixed into your dandruff or clerical shampoo. I wouldn't recommend using "cheap" shampoo as the sulphate will damage and dry. if possible do an olaplex treatment before the direct dye lifter step. you will see a much better result with a whole lot less damage.

People seem to have such good results with the baking soda methods. Maybe more people should try that before spending the money on countless colour removers and salons etc. I’ve heard people use baking soda, purple shampoo and vitamin c and it works but then there’s also the version where people add developer.

Hi Samantha, I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning about the Olaplex treatment, I never heard of it before and I absolutely love it! My hair got so overly porous from color removers and my hair wasn't taking color evenly, it was starting to become patchy in different areas so I decided to ask for one today, to help the damage done to my hair that was making my hair overly porous. I had the stand alone treatment done just to restore the damage and even out the porosity in my hair and I'm going to have my hair colored after that. The difference in my hair is unbelievable. My hair was dry and brittle before. Now it is so smooth, soft, and shiny. All the frayed split ends that were sticking out are completely smooth. It looks like all the damage was completely erased from my hair. Thank you for bringing it up in your video, my hair looks great after using it! :) Jen

A pro hair dresser said that ur hair only absorbs any mask/conditioner/moisturiser in like 4 or 5 mins. Then it wont absorb anymore. So you don't need to leave stuff on for hours or days. Thanks for the video I'm trying to remove pink right now!

ive been following you since your first blonde video, it was after your video i tried to do my hair blonde (After watching every black to blonde tutorial on youtube, literally). my hair had a lot of black permanent dyes on it after around 5 years so it never lifted past orange which was annoying and a given, so i dyed it chocolate brown a lot like you did haha. then after that i tried the bleaching process again and it didnt work :(. so now im just growing out my normal boring black hair since november until its nice and soft again. it was good though, before i went back to black on my lightened hair i used a lot of fun colours like purple and blue (dark tinted roots with vibrant ends like you did with the red! haha) and i dont regret it all since i had black hair all my life. i love watching your hair videos cos i feel so similar to you except you got that happy ending

It's hard to lighten the markecia.. between root and middle hair shaft. You need to foil it by strand to do it to even the color. Then do the roots the last. Wash it, dry in dryer, then pick a blonde color you want, put first 1/2 inc away from roots after 15 min. Put through roots then after 10 min. Add the filler mix it the left over all over to even the color, give at least 10 min to rest. Then wash it.

Color Prep by Color Oops works better than Color Oops. Today it took my hair from a dark intense violet (Violet Vixen) by Feria and it went right back to the blonde that it was previous to the violet. Then I put a champagne blonde over it for about 2 minutes.

I've got 3 easy letters for anyone to remember if you want to remove red or orangish color after "bleaching" hair ... if you're going to bleach your hair or make it blond or any light color ( from dark ) always ALWAYS use RGC ... Red Gold Corrector... sally's beauty supply . .it's a purple liquid... I used to dye my hair blond in the 90's.. i'm a man.. a stylist said you need RGC .. just believe me. if you are going blond from any dark color... add in the RGC into your coloring kit and it will look EXACTLY LIKE THE BOX says. just trust me.. if i'm not right, comment below... guarantee you it will work

This was an amazing, educating video! Even though I didn’t really need to watch it as I have colored my hair so many times I know how to remove color now, it helped to know how to use the ion lightener as I have just ordered it along with colorfix to get the red out of my hair. I’m hoping I can get this red out and go to a salon to get an ombré done on my hair, I’m wanting a dark root fading into a caramel brown color, I would just go to a salon to remove the color but I do not have the money to do all of that so I’m stripping my red out at home and going to a salon to get treatments done and have my hair colored! Thank you so much for this video, it was very helpful!

I actually just recorded an updated hair care routine with products and tips for how I got my hair healthy again (even though this whole process set me back a little bit). Hi Samantha, did you ever try using the vitamin c method to get rid of your hair color before in the past? I use it when my hair color has come out way too dark and it works. A lot of times I use it over a color remover because after a color remover your hair is left really really extremely porous. I noticed it also doesn't dry out your hair like the way color oops does. I thought the vitamin c method wouldn't work but I was surprised that it really did make a difference. I always take about 30 vitamin c 1000mg tablets (not the gummies or chewable ones) crush them in a blender and put it into a bowl, I use my tint bowl, and put in a lot of clarifying shampoo, you can also add a little conditioner if you want. Make sure it's a creamy consistency and put it on damp towel dried hair, I brush it on with my tint brush. Leave it on for about an hour and it will strip a lot of color out. It lightened my hair by two shades doing that just one time. You can also look it up online.

Awh, then I guess you didnt find a good hairdresser. When I had a bright red hair and wanted to go blonde, my hairdresser kept me there for 9+ hours and made absolute sure that not only the color, but the shade was the one i wanted, the shape is the one i wanted and basically did overall an amazing job. There wasnt a red string or an orange string anywhere in my hair. It was perfectly ashy blonde and not too damaged. For which I paid you can say not a little amount of money but it was so so so worth. And I couldnt have done it alone home.

PLEASE DONT LISTEN!!!!!!! as a hairdresser do not by any means do the first few steps yourself if you are going to a salon, please go as is we do not advise you to start stripping your hair on your own and come to us to finish it off. This is possibly the worst thing you can do. If you choose to become a blonde you can stay home and destroy yourself from beginning to end or come straight to a hairstylist to begin with this is your hair, so do not look to save a couple of bucks and completely destroy your hair and come to us as if we have a magic wand to rewind time. I’ve had plenty of times where I have turned people away because they went too far with their hair and already destroyed the integrity but people come with all colors dark bright, vibrant, red, and I get them the icy cool blonde they desire no it’s not gonna be cheap but if this is what you desire money should not be a factor if you’re concerned about it just keep your color as is but whatever you do do not listen to the given and this video!!!

I'm always super nervious when I think of using bleech on my hair, and since my hair is long, I think that if I ever bleech it, I'll bleech it in quarters, that way no part is processing longer that the rest if that makes sence. You know that I'm planning to lighten my hair, but for now I think I'll try light brown and use a highlift color. The last time I dyed my hair was back in September, so with washing my hair I'm assuming that most of the beld up is gone. I'm still going to use a color remover but I'm guessing that one round of that would be enough. I might repeat the highlift color though :/

Hanan A I don't think you'll have any problem at all going lighter! Especially if you use a color remover. Depending on how easily your hair lifts, you might find that you won't even ever need to use bleach. High lift color can lighten your hair a lot, especially if you use it a few times.

Not a fan of Manic Panic, but, it comes out with permanent hair dye. Unless they changed their formula. I used it when I was a teenager, whenever I wanted to change colors, I would use a permanent dye to remove it. Special Fx, on the other hand, nothing gets rid of all of it... I finally dyed it with a darker ash color to cover it up.
