How to reduce latency (delay) when recording vocals in GarageBand iOS
In this video, I explain why there is latency (lag/delay) when recording vocals in GarageBand iPhone, GarageBand iPad and other DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations)
Latency is caused by the processing required by the software (your DAW) and creates a small delay between when you sing and when your voice is heard back in your headphones. This latency can be very distracting and result in poor performances on your vocals.
There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of latency, specifically:
1. Remove or reduce the number of plugins being used when recordings, especially the "enhance tuning" in GarageBand which add a significant delay
2. Turn off software monitoring completely (you won't hear your voice in your headphones but will still hear other tracks
3. Use an interface that provide a "direct monitor" or "zero latency monitoring" option, such as the Steinberg UR12 or Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

Wow, Pete. Thanks for another great video. I haven’t had too many problems with latency but it is good to know how to handle them should they show up. And I love learning about zero latency. The fact that you do a video every day shows how deep Garageband is as a DAW and I’m very grateful for you and your channel and your willingness to share your knowledge with us.

I’m loving how many new videos you’ve made over the last couple days! Especially since everything I’ve learned from you inspired me to take a chance on getting a refurbished 256 gb ipad pro 10.5 that i bought on amazon for $429 out the door with the proceeds I earned from the licensing fees I received on a song I wrote and sang to Frances McDormand unexpectedly in a film that I was hired to be an extra on. Picked it up last night and it looks brand new yet I’m putting it through the paces to make sure it’s working right by binge watching your videos and luma fusion tutorials! Really looking forward to hearing this soulful song that you’re writing when it’s completed. I find minor keys to be compelling and this song sounds very timely. I’m so grateful for all that you do for the GarageBand community!

This is an important topic for people who record using a computer interface. For vocals, it's usually not too bad to turn off monitoring in your DAW, but guitars are a different story, particularly if you are using distortion or effects. When you are using a distorted setting, you will hear noises on your guitar that you wouldn't hear through direct monitoring. Also, if you are using plugins such as delay for effects, a la The Edge, it will be difficult to play the part sans delay.
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Very true! Perhaps a part two is needed covering latency in guitar recording as you’re right that it’s a different and probably harder problem to solve. Nothing worse than tying to rock out to a clean direct monitored guitar sound when you want something super crunchy. I’ve actually used a mic and my amp on a second channel before just for monitoring and also captured the clean guitar so I can add effects to the direct signal. 😄

The ability to add effects to vocals after the fact is one of my favorite things about GarageBand. Something super cool is you can turn your voice into a fuzzy electric guitar by moving the audio track to an amp track and changing it to Heavy Wah

Hey there. Yes, you can stream to any platform using audio gear but with audio interfaces it may put the audio on the left or right side depending which input you use.

So I find it confusing how it works with an instrument, like guitar. I want to play guitar using simulated amp effects on GarageBand: would I need to turn on direct monitoring on my interface or on GarageBand so there is no latency? And is there a way to have little to no latency while letting me hear the guitar effects in my headphones while I play?
@PeteJohnsMusic

Hey there. So, yes - if you want the GarageBand effects you’ll need to not use direct monitoring, but will be subject to at least some latency. Unfortunately there’s no real way around this.

Hey Pete is it possible to record with Bluetooth headphones
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there. It is possible, however Bluetooth generally has quite high latency, meaning the delay between what you hear and what is recorded, which can make recording more difficult.

Hello Thanks for this Could you recommend an IOS professional mic 🎤 please? And review it. Something with the least amount of latency, something that can be used to record vocal performances on GarageBand /other apps independently of having other devices & at the same time have cables so it can be connected to a keyboard or the monitor. Please recommend

Ok so my problem is, I didn’t have latency issues until I had already about finished my song. When I went back to fix some vocals, it started doing it bad. I tried turning off every effect or anything I could find. I having to record without monitoring on and then after the fact scooting up the whole track just to make it on beat. Help! Also my garage band doesn’t look like yours but I do have a pretty new iMac so I don’t know why ours would look so different. Any help would be appreciated!
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 5 жыл бұрын
That’s a strange one? Firstly, my GarageBand is on iOS so that probably explains the difference. So you are not experiencing latency when recording? At least in terms of what you can hear when monitoring the audio playback while recording? It might come down to what audio interface you are using and some of your settings in GarageBand. As I don’t have GarageBand on Mac I’m not sure I will be able to provide a lot of assistance sorry.

Pete Johns aw dang.. yeah I get the latency when recording. But it wasn’t doing it at first, and if I open up a new project it’s perfectly fine. So I’m assuming it’s something that I’ve done in settings. I just don’t have all those options that you’re showing whenever you click a new audio recording. I just double click the microphone and it’s ready to go no settings or anything. Well anyway thanks for trying.

What about Bluetooth latency when using a midi keyboard and Bluetooth speaker
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t recommend Bluetooth for this reason, especially the consumer grade Bluetooth speakers as they tend to have some serious latency. Some of the Bluetooth keyboards and MIDI adapters are actually quite good these days and manage to achieve very low levels of latency.

GarageBand keeps skipping on my phone. It’s done it for years. I’ll be trying to record a beat and it spazzes out and skips and ruins the track, making it impossible for me to record even a single verse. No one has the answer to this issue. @@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for the link. I watched the video. I did everything, still not working. It will glitch in the middle of a beat. I even tried changing the tempo on the drums.. it seems to be incapable of playing one single beat without skipping. Maybe it’s because I play metal music and it tends to be faster? All I know is this is absolutely ridiculous and I wasted a lot of time trying to use this program on my phone when I could have bought actual recording software instead. Looks like that’s my best option at this point

I can get very low latency (5ms or so) but I find with really low latency (but not direct monitoring, I haven't tried that) it makes me sing bad because it's almost like I phase cancel myself if that makes sense. I found it much easier to hear if I'm in tune if I make the buffer larger but that isn't practical because the timing of things is off. Anyone else experience anything like this before?
