Now let's look at plays!
--------------------------------------
Is there any more misunderstood rule in High School Basketball than the backcourt rule? A case could certainly made that there is not. Today we will look at what really is a simple rule and the plays surrounding it. Today, on 5 Play Fridays. Stick around!
Team control during a throw-in is not intended to be equated to player control status inbounds which creates team control status inbounds. During the throw-in, 10-seconds, 3-seconds, frontcourt status, backcourt status, closely guarded, etc., are not factors as there has yet to be player control/team control status obtained inbounds.
Since a 2011-12 rules change, team control exists during a throw-in when the thrower-in has the ball at her/his disposal. The change was made ONLY to eliminate the penalty of administering free throw(s) when a teammate of the thrower-in commits a common foul during the throw- in.
• While the ball remains live, a loose ball always remains in control of the team whose player last had control, unless it is a try or tap for goal.
SECTION 4 BALL LOCATION, AT DISPOSAL
ART. 1 . . . A ball which is in contact with a player or with the court is in the backcourt if either the ball or the player (either player if the ball is touching more than one) is touching the backcourt.
ART. 2 . . . A ball which is in contact with a player or with the court is in the frontcourt if neither the ball nor the player is touching the backcourt.
SECTION 35 PLAYER LOCATION
ART. 1 . . . The location of a player or non-player is determined by where the player is touching the floor as far as being:
a. Inbounds or out of bounds.
b. In the frontcourt or backcourt.
c. Outside (behind/beyond) or inside the three-point field-goal line.
ART. 2 . . . When a player is touching the backcourt, out of bounds or the three-point line, the player is located in backcourt, out of bounds or inside the three-point line, respectively.
ART. 3 . . . The location of an airborne player with reference to the three factors of Article 1 is the same as at the time such player was last in contact with the floor or an extension of the floor, such as a bleacher.
SECTION 9 BACKCOURT
ART. 1 . . . A player shall not be the first to touch the ball after it has been in team control in the frontcourt, if he/she or a teammate last touched or was touched by the ball in the frontcourt before it went to the backcourt.
ART. 2 . . . While in player and team control in its backcourt, a player shall not cause the ball to go from backcourt to frontcourt and return to backcourt, without the ball touching a player in the frontcourt, such that he/she or a teammate is the first to touch it in the backcourt.
ART. 3 . . . During a jump ball, throw-in or while on defense, a player may legally jump from his/her frontcourt, secure control of the ball with both feet off the floor and return to the floor with one or both feet in the backcourt. The player may make a normal landing and it makes no difference whether the first foot down is in the frontcourt or backcourt.

what is the difference between example 1 (throw in play) and example 3 (another throw in play)...are the difference correct calls due to team control?

Hi Rob! Play 1 simply misapplies the fact that we cannot have a backcourt violation until we have team control on the court (established by player control.) Play 2 - there is an exception in the backcourt rule allowing a player to jump from their frontcourt, catch the ball in the air and then land in the backcourt.

One other thing I noticed in a number of these videos: the signals by the calling officials were poor. Give the stop clock violation signal and then the over and back signal.

The play shown in the Overtime video happened with our crew in the first game of last season. We got the call right, but initially it took us all by surprise. It was a great lesson on being ready to officiate from the very start of the game!

yes, its back court violation. Black establish team control and player control when non-jumper secure control the ball then she passed the ball from front count back to back court. it will be back court violation when black catches the ball at back court and the ball need to throw in at the back court side line.

First, just found your channel today and appreciate all of the video examples! I'm a little confused about #4. As explained in #1, I thought player control must be established in the frontcourt, before a backcourt violation could occur. In #4, there is no control established in the frontcourt.

Hi Rob and welcome! Remember this is different from a throw-in. We have: • TEAM control on the court (dribbling in the back court) by a player with player control • Player jumps from her front court (so, by rule she has front court status) • That player catches/touches the ball (giving the ball front court status) • then lands in the backcourt, causing the ball to go back court. Does that make sense?

Just found your channel as well; great videos! Let's say in Play #4, the offensive player catches the ball, but before landing, realizes she will be in violation, and throws the ball off an opponent in the backcourt. Can get team regain possession legally?

NFHS did a poor job wording the exception rule and it confused our entire association meeting 1. It’s much more easily understandable in video. It should be cleaned up for next year though.

Is there a rules reference for play #2? Looks like to me she establishes team control in her frontcourt with one foot in the front court but then her other foot comes down in the backcourt.

9.9.1 SITUATION A: A1 catches the throw-in pass with one foot on the floor in A's frontcourt and the other foot not touching the floor. The non- pivot foot then comes down in A's backcourt. RULING: Violation. Player and team control are established in A's frontcourt when A1 catches the throw-in pass. The violation occurs when A1 subsequently touches the backcourt with the non-pivot foot. (4-12-6; 9-9-3)

play 3 i probably wouldnt put a whistle on this. reason being im not gonna guess on whether she was "in the air" or not on the catch. just my take easy to miss that type of play.

I agree being slightly anti whistle in this situation. I think you could also claim she didn't "control" (bring ball to body) until she stepped in backcourt.
