Hey Buddy I watched your 1st video and thumbs up ,, I just stumbled on this new video and thumbs up again ,, at some point I will attempt this myself ,, I'm a small time scrapper of metals and find lots of AC's , It's a good way for me to make a buck by extending the life of the air cons i find instead of sending them to their grave ,, But up here in Canada there a little freaky on freon but if I can save a buck and make a buck then F__k it i'm in ,, take care !

+Graham sargent - #1 Rule. As long you are NOT releasing Gas into the Environment, you are NOT breaking any Law! As for refilling and making Money, I am sure you can easily. Here is what I would do, if I were you. Get a good " Gauge " adapter / filler. They have them are Harbor Freight, although I don't know if they have those in Canada. I am sure you can spend extra for Shipping, since this is a Business Adventure. NOTE: If you are serious about making money.... On the Unit itself, it will tell you what type of Gas is in there. From that, you can actually buy the SAME TYPE of Gas using Ebay etc... Double check for international shipping with Seller(s). Back to the Gauge Adapter, the reason why I suggested that is..., you can " VACUUM " the Line to do the " Proper " Filling. By doing it Properly, you can have better Customer and they will send their Family / Friends to you and also, you can make Money from just doing " refills " as well. Well that is all the Tips I got for you right now. Don't be afraid to venture out...., there is a lot of Money to be made. You just have to do it! :)

I have an old wall ac unit that is 36 years old. It now works like brand new. I used it every year but the last couple years just was not cooling much anymore. I got inspired after watching your vids and pulled it out and did like you did. The only difference is that the unit would only take about a third of a can before it stopped taking any more, and this was on for about 30 minutes. It equalized at 50 psi and was throwing out 37 degrees steady. All the nay sayers out there, you just go out and buy your $500 AC unit, and I'll enjoy my ice cold air for $5.00. Been working nice and quiet now for several weeks, and I don't put the dial above #5 out of 10 or I would freeze. Thanks Jordan.

@baanman I have a little Kenmore window unit that has worked every year for over 30 years also! It was the first AC we ever bought. They made them good back then! Anyway, I'm going to get a AC tech to "recharge" this because I'm sure it's still got life in it. Just doesn't have the COLD air I like. 🙂

Hi Jordan! I just wanted to say thanks a MILLION for this A/C fix! My Story: a couple of years ago a purchased 2 GE window A/C's, but after several months of use they started giving off a terrible smell. The cause was that there were no drain holes in the bottom of the case for the water from the A/C's "sweating" and it collected in the bottom, about an inch deep, the fan was splashing through the water like a paddle boat, which was making the motor work harder and spraying moisture into the house! Not only that, but then the water went stagnant and a red algae started growing in the water which was the ultimate cause of the terrible odor! So, I decided to drill my own drain hole in the two A/C's, the first was successful and the problem was solved, however, during drilling of the hole in the second A/C, the drill caught me by surprise when it breached the metal case and the drill bit shot up too far and punctured one of the copper lines. A definite comic moment as I got sprayed with freon and stagnant water with algae! Not too mention I ruined the $200 A/C unit. I set it aside and bought another brand (which I made sure had a proper drain hole). But as a DIYer I planned on figuring out how to repair the A/C myself once I had the time, nothing to lose, like you Jordan, since it was broken already. I was looking for how I could refill the A/C when I stumbled across your videos which enlightened me to the existence of the line-tap. And also that I could use something other than R410a freon in it, since I didn't want to pay $100 for a big tank. So I took the A/C apart, repaired the damaged line with a copper "patch" and solder, then refilled it just as you showed. Filled to about 45-50 PSI and my A/C is now working good as new again! It cools every bit as well as the other identical unit! Thanks again! Long live DIY tinkerers!!! Matt

So I officially call "Bullshit" on those who say you can't use R134a in a R410a window unit! Most likely they are just covering their own asses from regulations, legalities and fear of being sued, or listening to those people. And to those who say R134a will burn out a R410a compressor, I say, how the FUCK do you know?!? Have you ever tried?!? I suspect those people are just going "by the book," the same book written by manufactures and others covering their asses for regulatory and legal reasons and not wanting to be sued. Jordan's is working still after years, and mine is working fine after a week so far...if it does happen, it was a lost cause anyway, so I had nothing to lose (does ANYONE looking to fix a non-working window A/C have anything to lose?!?)...I've done a lot of fixes as a DIYer over the years that people say can't or shouldn't be done, but I did, and the fixes worked! Hurray for those of us who think for ourselves, question everything, and experiment! Think outside of the box you morons!

Wow, great story! You are welcome! YES, I think about 50 PSI would do the trick. Since I refilled this and I also did it again since I made mistakes few years ago. Happy to report, the AC Unit is working AOK still. I am cleaning it first before I make a new video, but I will update again with another video so People can see it's still working.

@@mattbaker5757 Calling professionals who took the time to study the field they work in is just down right wrong. If you yourself took any time to look into how refrigerants act based on their chemical compounds and the pressures they operate at, you would understand why you cannot simply put a different refrigerant in "because its cheaper." There is a reason why certain refrigerants are not legal to sell to individuals like yourself, simply because you have no knowledge of refrigeration whatsoever. I support DIYers and people who want to try and repair rather than replace. If you take the time to look at my channel, you will see thats something I live on, repair rather than replace. But repairs cannot be hack jobs. Your unit if it once took r410a should have a suction pressure of around 120psig, however, 134a will operate at around 40psig at that same interval (this information could be found on a P-T chart). They do not maintain even close operating pressures. You risk major damage to the compressor of the unit. Basic refrigeration knowledge, basic answer. Another example of this situation would be someone suggesting you put diesel gas in a gasoline engine....see where this is going? Feel free to contact me if you have questions regarding anything us "morons" know about OUR field. Thanks

The water splashing on the coils is actually a built in design of the A/C unit. It helps cool the coils by splashing water across them. Obviously, if you don't want it spitting water into your house you can drain the pan, but I just wanted to let you know that it's designed to do that. It works similar to the principle of how a small motor has a "slinger" that scoops up oil out of the pan and splashes it on the moving parts. It won't hurt your unit to drain the water, but it will run a little hotter.

Glad I watched this. My AC is over 5 years old and never serviced. I just wash the filter. It started making the horrid grinding sound and blows out hot air. I thought it was a lubriction issue, which may be part of the story. But when I heard your compressor, it's the same exact sound I'm getting. I'll try a kit and report back.

ure doin it right bro..but yup actually u have to refill the r134a till 70psi - 80psi (r22 should be more cooler)...and one more bro,the piping line got frosting its just because of the pressure of the gas u've refill and it will frost until the gas pressure refilled by 50psi and aboved..dont have to be afraid after this if u saw ur home a/c gets frosting ,my solution is check for gas pressure whether its drop to 50psi and check too if there is leaking around somewhere from ur a/c units...Keep it up!!& dont stop learning bro...its good to know some knowledge about it than know nothing,is it right??im doing this a/c things for 10 years right now,but still try to learn more and still install, repairing a/c..thumbs up for u bro...liked your videos too...👍👍🙌🙌👏👏👏🍻🍻😇

I am pretty sure the water pan at the bottom is supposed to fill with water/condensation and the fan sprinkle it on the condenser coil to keep it working strong on hot humid days. When you drill the holes it loses its cooling ability on those days. I know the coil bathing in acidic water makes it corode faster but mabe sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda in the pan.

45 PSI on the low side is good for R134A as per the pressure / temp chart. That will give you 40 degrees at the metering device (orifice / capillary tube / expansion valve). 110 PSI is your "static" pressure before you switch on the unit. You can charge with the can inverted but ONLY in short spurts. Otherwise you can slug the compressor (not good).

Can you add r134-a into split units and on top of the existing refrigerant? I installed the split unit 2 years ago and it held vacumn over night. So I don't think I have a leak but I think they just put enough freon in units. My opinion. But now it will slightly freeze up. I checked and cleaned coils and they were in great shape.

Some advice for you : - You can know if you have low pressure / refrigerant on your air conditioner if the refrigerant line is frosting. - I suggest to dip the refrigerant can in a water ( normal tap water or even warm water ) to heat up the can so that way all of the refrigerant will be flowing into your air conditioner. - Don't underfilled your air conditioner because the compressor will work really hard to pump your "underfilled" refrigerant. It will kill the compressor much faster. - if you have an condensation on your refrigerant line, then congratulation! You've just successfully refilled your air conditioner. Well I'm not an expert, but I know quite a lot of experience from refilling my own split system using R410-A :-D I also have some window air conditioner (5000 btu )

Hey JB! So my gauge set arrived today, and I am out working on a few old units. No choice but to use some old R22 stock and I am not happy about it. Big one, average sized and a portable model as well :-) Dogs ate the power cord and the heat discharge hose on that indoor model. So the only thing I find that looks different between manufacturers is the routing of various outer diameters of inlet tube in each of the compressors. They mostly have the same sized casing yet the capacity to cool is all over the map. Interesting .... Which is the return or low side that we are working with? Is it the line from the condensor (cold side) with what I am assuming is a pressure drop?

Test with the Adapter first to see where your Freon at. From there, read the label to see how much you will need. Also, the label will tell you the right gas to put in too. If there is a leak, they sell leak seal too. NOTE: This is for refill only and not release any gas in the air, you will violate the EPA's rule. ;)

THE PURPOSE OF THE LITTLE TRENCHES, WHERE YOU DRILLED THE HOLES ARE TO LEAD THE WATER TO THE CONDENSER FAN. THERE'S A RING AROUND THE FAN BLADES (SLINGER- RING) THAT PICKS UP THE WATER AND "SLINGS" IT AGAINST THE CONDENSER TO MAXIMIZE ITS COOLING EFFICIENCY- THIS HELPS THE FAN IN CONVERTING THE HIGH PRESSURE GAS TO A LIQUID AS PURPOSED. ALSO,I DIDN'T SEE YOU PURGE (OR CONTINEOUSLY FLOW) FREON THROUGH THE GAUGE LINE TO AVOID PUSHING AIR INTO THE SYSTEM. NEVERTHELESS, NOT DOING SO GIVES YOU A HIGHER "FALSE" GAUGE READING & IT INTRODUCES MOISTURE INTO THE SYSTEM, THE MOISTURE CAN CAUSE FREEZE-UPS INSIDE THE LINE CAUSING RESTRICTIONS; IT ALSO REACTS WITH THE OIL WHICH CREATES ACID & DESTROYS MOTOR WINDINGS. If I could make a suggestion take a hvac class. You shouldn't release the refrigerant into the atmosphere. 135- and 410 is not as bad to the ozone but it will help the greenhouse gas effect. You should recover the refrigerant into a recovery tank then test the system with nitrogen to see where the leak is. Fix the leak then vacuum it to 500 microns. Then refill it with the correct amount of refrigerant that's on the data plate. Ac systems don't loose refrigerant just by age there is a leak somewhere...

R134a doesn’t have to be recovered. If that was the case they would require you to have a license to buy it like r12 or r22. You don’t need an have course for that. What’s important is you retrofit the machine of going from r22 to r134. This is interesting because I might try to recharge my unit.

Not at all a good idea. Take it from someone who has experience in the field. You cannot just mix or replace refrigerant types, they operate at different pressures and temperatures depending on the chemical composition of the refrigerant. Putting r134a (a low pressure and temperature refrigerant) into a high temp unit such as a window unit will destroy the compressor, either by slugging or overheating.

find it hard to believe that unit is 134a ,thats for cars. the compressor oil probably wont let 134 mix because its meant for another oil. 410 a probably (just heard you say it) you have the right idea , there are many informative vids about ac recharging. pls where glasses (safety) refrigerant will turn eyes to a candle wax kinda stuff should it happen to spray your face. be carefull.

when it frost up that mean it is under filled, the pressure is lower and it gets too cold, if it is overfilled the metal case on the compressor would sweat and it would not cool properly.

Don't drill holes in it. You're wrong the fan slings the water onto the coil to get evaporative cooling that maximizes the efficiency of the air conditioner you will get lower temps with water in it. They are designed to work with water in them.

The gauge your using appears to be for R22, R134a should be in the 30-40 psi range for best cooling, R22 70-80 psi, R410a 110-120 psi.(on the low pressure side, approximately, ymmv) I had a hole in my R410a unit, repaired it and found 45 psi was the best it would cool on R134a. I switched to R152a and it cools better than R134a and draws 20-30 watts less power at around the same low side pressure. R152a is also known as "Dust off" I used a side can tap. If your above 45-50 psi your going to use more electricity with less cooling due to excessive high side pressures. My 6000 btu unit now uses less than 300 watts/hr when it was using nearly 600 watts on R410a, less pressure is less load on the compressor. I get an 18°F drop in temperature from inlet to outlet.

+Scott Gaines - Thankx for the Tips :))))) - Unfortunately I don't have a Watt Meter, so I cant' measure it :(. But as far as for the Gauge, it's around 60-70 psi it said. Also, someone said I don't have to worry about " Ambient Temperatures ", since AC is different from Car AC. I did mentioned that from 30-40 psi, my Compressor was making a lot of noises. But when I got up to 50 psi or in this case 55 psi, I no longer have noises. NOTE: If you notice, no matter what I do, I wasn't able to get the psi to climb :(((. Currently, the psi in the System is around 55.

The person who said ~30lbs is not correct. that would be for a system designed to run off of r134a originally. this is either a r22 if it is older(uses mineral oil which can "coagulate with r134a".) or r410 which uses pve oil. it depends on temp but with r22 should be 58-72 psi depending on temp on high side you would see 240-280. r410 should be over 100. i am all for hillbilly repairs especially when all the so called pros say it's impossible.
