How to refinish a clawfoot tub:
1. Remove any flaking paint & rust with the paint and rust-removing drill attachment. Make sure you wear a respirator mask. *** If you’re concerned - Test for lead paint first
2. We started sanding with 80 grit, then 120, then finished with 220. You can use an orbital sander as we did, or you can use sanding blocks.
3. Vacuum and Tack cloth the entire exterior of the tub to remove any debris and dust.
4. Using a foam roller, prime the tub with Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer.
5. Once the primer is completely dry, you can paint the tub. We used Benjamin Moore Advance because we had it on hand (this is for the EXTERIOR of a cast iron tub, refinishing the interior is a whole different ball game, and we didn’t do that.)
6. For the feet we used this same process, but for the topcoat, we sprayed them with spray paint (in your color choice)
I will also post a tutorial on how we cleaned the tub. All refinishing and cleaning products we use are in our amazon storefront or in our LTK.
