Is your child a gimme monster? Put a lid on demands and tantrums with these tips.
Step 1: Set an example
Be a good role model. If you moan and whine when things don't go your way, it won't go unnoticed.
Step 2: Be consistent
Stand up to your children even when it seems easier to give in. Part of your job in preparing your children for life is to teach them that they can't always get what they want.
Step 3: Teach them to give
Go through your child's toys together periodically and pick ones that can go to charity. This will teach them the importance of giving and not just receiving.
Step 4: Give them your time
Do things with your child that don't involve spending money. Your undivided attention is the best gift you can give them.
Step 5: Give them chores
Give them chores so they learn responsibility.
Tip
Make a chore chart for your child outlining what is expected of them and on which days.
Step 6: Don't bribe them
Never bribe your children to behave reasonably or responsibly, or they will begin to expect compensation for doing the right thing.
Tip
Never bribe your children to eat a healthy food. Studies indicate it makes them like the item even less.
Step 7: Rein in the relatives
Ask friends and relatives to respect the limits you set. There's no point in setting boundaries if other people are going to step right over them.
Step 8: Know the consequences
Know the consequences of spoiling a child: Studies indicate that spoiled children are more likely grow into unmotivated and depressed teenagers, and to abuse drugs and alcohol.
Did You Know?
Eighty percent of Americans believe today's children are more spoiled than the previous generation.

Honestly the best solution is to not spoil them in the first place. It's one thing to raise children where from the start you discipline them to understand real life principles and values. It's another thing to let them get used to everything being handed to them, then take it all away in an attempt to discipline them. Especially if you go all the way to create a safe space for your children where they face no hardship whatsoever, only for them to leave the safety of their home and be completely disillusioned when they realize they have to work for what they want and understand the consequences for any and every choice they make. Life is tough, and it's better that children understand that sooner, rather than later.

I'm so sorry I grew up the same way, my mother would yell at me and take the said chore into her own hands because I wasn't capable enough in her eyes. When I would try to cook and didn't do it exactly right she threw it away. I didn't learn how to cook and clean until I became a caregiver for the elderly. I'm fortunate enough to have learned from some old people that cared.

This comment section seems to be full of people who either don't really like children or are brainwashed to think that violence and humiliation at an early age will solve the problem. It will not. Your parents might have done this with you and you may think you turned out great but others will beg to differ. (There will always be someone who will disagree with you) You are only creating more difficulties for yourself and your child later in life. Corporeal punishment does not teach children WHY things aren't right. They only teach them to just be sneakier next time and not to trust you. They also built up pain tolerance and it will eventually make corporeal punushment less effective. (I would know)

scleuse. No I don't believe in conspiracy theories, nor do I have depression. I don't, however, trust my parents. I trust them to see me in ways that I would never show the world but thats only due to circumstance. They raised me and they love me but every time they (my mom mostly, my dad just liked to pull my ears) lost a little bit of my trust. I don't trust them with anything I hold dear or close to me. They don't deserve my trust, but I'm lucky enough to have parents that do deserve my love.

The thing is; there is a difference between being abusive and being a disciplinarian. I'll leave it at that, because I'm not going to write a mile-long comment about something somebody is going to disagree with and write another mile long comment about.

This is, mostly good advice. The most important thing is to avoid spoiling a kid in the first place. Mainly, you have to learn to consult the kid's preferences, and help them fulfill their own interests. They'll learn by example to pay attention to others' preferences, and respect them. Basically, a spoiled kid is one who has been treated like a kid.

I definitely agree with the spoiled part but some people confuse a spoiled child with a spoiled brat. They are two different things. I do believe that most kids are spoiled, but I know someone who is very wealthy and very spoiled but she isn’t a brat. She doesn’t flaunt her possessions and money around and she doesn’t degrade people based on wealth. In fact she is one of the nicest people I know and she is very grateful for everything she gets she is also very polite and never complains when she’s over other peoples houses. Then again there is another person I know who is the exact opposite so not all spoiled kids are nice

I had to learn this the hard way. I was so used to everything being handed to me growing up in Jamaica and being raised by my grandma. I never had to do anything besides school ballet and music then go home because my parents lived in America and would send us money all the time. When I finally moved to the US to live with my mom it was not what I expected.😒

Having a child at 19 doesnt make you a bad parent. My mom was 18 when my brother was born, 22 when my other brother was born, and 31 when she had me. All three of us turned out great. The parenting skills are what matter. Im fourteen years old and I have a decent amount of patience for children, I babysit my 7 and 4 year old cousins often. And for her doing stuff like that to you, stand up for yourself. Once I punched my cousin but I wouldn't recommend that because at the time she was 3 and I was 6. Tell her she can't always get what she wants and that you don't have to buy her anything if she's going to be mean. And nobody will think you're kidnapping her. People can tell when a child is a spoiled brat.

I have been trying to speak to my mother about this, she doesn't know what to do much. My little brother is 5 years old and my mom acts like a slave to him. He will make a big mess and run away when my mom comes. Later on he makes another mess and thinks its okay because my mom and my other siblings have to clean it up for him. I hate having to live with him because my mom hits me whenever i don't listen to my younger brother. Many times i have hit him and he only ends up crying and not caring.

lock them in a room with nothing aside from 2 blankets and a pillow, and use a nail to stop the window from opening, every half an hour escort them to the bathroom. The only other time to open their door is for breakfast lunch and dinner. Idk if it would work but trying won't hurt anyone, and when they complain explain to them why they are in there
