Thanks for the video. Radio Shack has went out of business since the making of your video. I couldn't find any etching solution locally, so I used muratic acid. Works, but not as good as the etching stuff. I should've looked on line. I'm doing a medium relic on a Strat style kit from Solo...it's turning out pretty nice for my first time! If I do it again...I'll find that etching solution somewhere...that stuff works quick!

Can I use a q-tip and rub some ferric chloride on each pole piece? I ask this because my humbucker has no covers on it and the screws I can take off, but not the slugs. I want to do this to my pole pieces but don't want to ruin my pickup. So yay or nay to using q-tips?

@@PorterPickups actually I just did it yesterday. It worked, although they didn't black out as much as I wanted. They do look aged and vintage, but I'm trying to make them as dark as the slugs in my SD antiquity Texas Hoy pickups. I guess now I'll try Aluminum black from Birchwood Casey

you can if it's nickel plating, it won't do anything to chrome or gold.

Hi! Nice job! What brand is this pickup covers? I tried to follow your method, on genuine gibson nickel pickup covers but It doesn't work, like the solution doesn't have effect on the metal or like the cover has some film that protect the cover... so... what brand of pickup cover did you use? Thank you!

Really depends on the exact plating material that’s used, most nickel we’ve tried works great, so maybe you got chrome by mistake or something

@PorterPickups
@PorterPickups 8 жыл бұрын
+Beer and Guitars we usually wax pot them after this process in the shop. Otherwise, just leave them rusty! maybe let them dry out completely before installing. in this method the solution will really keep going without just wiping it off. don't mix it with water, or it might spread and look bad

What are the dimensions of the covers? Would the standard non-covered humbucker opening in a strat scratchplate need modifying to fit them?
@PorterPickups
@PorterPickups 7 жыл бұрын
The Covers will work in most strat pick guards, they are just slightly bigger than the baseplate dimensions. Your biggest concern would be the string spacing of the poles and making sure that was a match between the pickups!

I did just that. Just used really find sandpaper on the Gibson Classic 57's. Took me much longer but I am really pleased the way it turned out. I used the white vinegar method for the tuners.

Also never use steel wool around your pick ups. They are magnetic and steel wool fragments will get inside your pick ups and cause issues.

I don't like the idea of relicing guitars and guitar parts because a beat up or "reliced" guitar is something you have to earn from years and years of playing it's not something you just like do to a guitar without earning it
@PorterPickups
@PorterPickups 6 жыл бұрын
Jordan Powers tend to agree there! That said, there's more "convincing" relics out there than others guitar wise. It's certainly much better to earn it by just playing one guitar constantly.

There are all kinds of reasons to relic. One is if you are putting new parts on a vintage guitar, those new parts will look totally out of a place unless you relic them.

it's one method to try using circuit board etching solution. Solution is in the name of the product we use, so hopefully that didn't cause any confusion... It's one of many methods for relic covers, so we're just highlighting this one.
