Thank you so much sir! I feel like super woman doing this job. I followed your instructions and was able to do it all by myself. The only thing that worries me if I do not have the the vent that you talk about so now I wonder if those acid fumes are all over my car as I drive .

Hi Maria. So well done having a go. Not all batteries will have that vent but if yours does then it would be good to get hold of some tubing and connect that vent line. MRT

Thank you for this tutorial! It was incredibly helpful! I have a question. If we remove the same battery from the car to recharge it then we reinstall it properly is it required to recode the same battery? I really need an advice before trying to remove my battery to recharge it.

Coding is only required when you change your battery. The age of battery and cca are not changing, so no coding necessary.

Yes when you get a new battery you do need to code it. The car will change the charge rates, etc to suit the new battery. MRT

good video but the vent is not for acid or anything minor like that, it's because batteries produce hydrogen when they are charging and there is a little chance if there is a fire nearby they explode

How did you get the electrical box off the positive terminal man? I tried to get mine off and was an absolute ball ache! Is there anything else underneath thats attached to the battery? Or is it just the 2 clips on either side? Cheers!

Be careful replacing a battery in a BMW. My battery was completely dead, with no warning of the impending failure. I was stuck in a parking lot. Tried to tow it, but the tow truck could not get to the car, and the battery was too dead to get it into neutral to push it. Could not get it to change gears with a jump either. So I watched a couple of videos, then bought a new BMW battery (for $200) and replaced it. The car started up fine, but the convertible top would not move. So I immediately drove to a BMW shop 10 minutes away. They performed a reset of some kind, which got the top moving, but now the windows were out of sync. Next day, the shop could not start the car, and told me the starter was dead. They replaced the starter (for $1000), and that one promptly died. They blamed it on a bad new starter. With a 3rd starter installed, they got the car running, but the windows still were not working. So they called BMW tech support, and were told that the FMR (?) module that controls the windows was shot, probably damaged by driving before the reset. That part is on the way, for another $1000 installed cost. There may be more damage yet to discover, assuming I get the car back in some sort of working order. It's been 10 days now.

Hi Craig, Thanks for sharing on here. Wow that sounds rough! I wonder what the initial failure was? I find it hard to believe that you can damage a module by driving without a reset? I haven't heard of that before. Sorry for your rough run, I trust it will be smooth from here MRT

This is because you didn’t get the battery coded to the car.... It causes all kind of gremlins, ‘ibs’ intelligent battery system, will drop voltage on certain functions on the car so the vital functions have power to operate, sometimes it drops voltage on vital functions as low voltage will cause electronic confusion Coding needed to let car know a new battery has been installed other wise the car will kill the new battery within a year Overcharge/undercharge will kill starters motors

Sounds like u messed up the module when u jumped it from the battery rather then the bonnet/hood. And you are supposed to code a new battery hence all the barcodes u can see on the batter and wires ect. (Ex BMW dealership mechanic from the uk)

Where is the battery ground? The little red one? I don't have that on mine. Having stop problems in middle of driving. And sometimes it won't start.

Hi there. Cars are normally 12v DC. Direct Current. And normally the positive is red. The negative (ground) will be brown or black. If you need a new battery have a look at the links in the description. MRT

Hi jimmy I love my 120i. It is my BMW panel van. I drop the rear seat or seats down flat and I have huge space to run my pool business. I love driving so love to throw it around corners and enjoy it very much. Have a look at the playlist of 1 series BMW videos that I have at the end of this video.

I have 160,000 KM. Yes very reliable. I have had to replace the radiator, but that was leaking when I bought it. A big tip with BMW is regular Oil changes, I change the oil every 10,000km. This saves lots of issues MRT

I removed this battery to use it to test another car and then i put it back. So no i didn't have to code it.

Always disconnect the negative lead last and reconnect the negative lead first so the car is earthed, the battery won't spark when you reconnect it if it's earthed

This is not correct. When disconnecting the battery, remove negative first, then positive. When connecting the battery you do the same thing in reverse - attach positive first then negative. The way to remember is if you only have one terminal connected, it should be the positive one. That means it's the last to be disconnected and the first to be reconnected.

Hey mark i have a bmw 120i and was wansnt sure on how to remove dead battery then found your video 👍 only problem is cant get to the battery through the boot. How much would it possibly cost me to get someone to remove it and is it worth getting it fixed? Car has been parked for about 6months due to a leaking radiator needs replacing got quoted $1350???

You only have to code your battery if you replace it. If you put the same one back in there is no need to code. To code in a new battery takes a high level OBD tool

Thanks for the video! Do you know what is that small black connector that remain loose, near the negative pole? It has 2 wires, blue and red. I couldn't see you handling it on the video. You can see it clearly at 0:51, right side.
