I remember the old victor cove. I’ve been in the plaster trade since 1978. Retired 7 years ago and had been asked to do jobs like you’re doing now. The old 2 inch victor cove is a few mm bigger then the metric 55mm. Enjoy you videos.

Haha, yeah for sure. The hammer drill works well, but risk some collateral damage in the process. Sometimes I go beast mode with floor scraper

Wow, that stuff came off SO easily. I was just renovating my bathroom, worked on chiseling off my cornice (110 mm). After 20 minutes I had managed about 30 cm, started using angle grinder but the effort was so great I am going to tile up to cornice, then put in a false ceiling. Thanks for the video.

I feel you. It's the hardest part I reckon. Sometimes it's grueling to remove.

Thanks for this video! I used your technique to remove some old victor cove and it is so much easier than the method I used previously. Three more rooms to do as I write this! Cheers

The thing is ........ here in Australia and in the UK, it is very unusual to square set ceilings. . Square setting ceilings with tape seems to be a US and Canada thing ....... Cheap ass thing .... where labour is cheaper tan materials. . We almost always use cornice, even in cheaper jobs . The other thing, I believe is, cornice takes up expansion and contraction AND building movement better

So if i knock off all my old cornice, I can replace it with the same size?. If I sand and skimcoat the plaster!?

How'd you do the curved cut in cornice? And what do you guys do for cracks in cornice, the fine line ones (cyclone area). Apparently I need an expansion joint so cutting the straight line in a 30 year old house sounds fun. There's also a sheer line crack I believe, the 2 boards move up n down so I'm guessing it needs a backer? It's basically near the area someone said to put expansion joint. Not sure if that's an expensive job, it's about 800mm wide area, but I'll get some plasterers to quote unless it's not a big issue to do. Done large patches easy enough but being low income I DIY as much as possible, especially painting as I am quite finicky and the last painter basically left drips all over the trims, paint all over fan switches, meanwhile I take my time and can cut in better than he did for some weird reason. A diff painter did another room with muchh better skill and I couldn't believe the difference. You guys seem to do a good job though. Do you need to be hyper accurate to add an expansion joint with straight edge and multitool, blade to get that gap required. Cyclone movement I think caused it, 2 category 5's will probably do that and we had someone's roof hit our roof in Larry. Never seen an expansion joint in a ceiling here in houses, are they new?

Thanks for writing, Crazy about the cyclone. How did the expansion joint go for you.

Got sick, needed surgery im getting next week. fun times lol, renos on pause but yeah cracks seem stable. Trying to find local plasterers has been hard, i was a bit uneasy on if you can diy an expansion joint. I guess I'm happy to try but don't wanna make a mess. I did get up to patching walls n got them pretty damn smooth with cornice cement + backing boards + filler backer then I did 45minute gyprock to fill the cavity, taped with fibrefuse?, then coat again like vids I've seen from you guys. Filled in surrounding areas for a gentle curve vs perfect flat. Just got sick before the topping compound, even bought a 1m topcoat skimming knife. Sanded with the big 300mm round sandpapers to 240 I think. That wall had 3 patches to do so it's looking strong n fine. Having woodworking experience came in handy with sanding through the grits. Dunno if plasterers advertise much or if they're flat chat busy. Do you think a level 5 finish on one 3.8m wall would be impossible for me? Or close to? Dark wall paint so worried about ripples. Probably have downlights 1.2m away. @@Maxkil
