How to Remove a Broken Bolt | 3 Ways to Use an Easy Out/ Stud Extractor

This video shows 3 different ways of using an easy out or stud extractor. This sets main purpose is to remove broken bolts.

Good video. The only thing I'd do differently is use a breaker bar during removal, especially if you encounter a lot of resistance. What you give up in convenience you more than make up for in the additional strength and preventing damage to the ratcheting mechanism. You could, of course, start with the BB, then switch over to a ratchet once the fastener(s) has (have) been loosened.

Thank you. Usually I would use a breaker bar in general but most broken bolts are usually fairly loose considering the head is gone. Anything too seized usually requires more drilling, over sizing and a helicoil.... or my friend Mr. Blowtorch XD

Don't forget the center punch or you'll end up like me , with a bunch of off center holes trying to hollow out the bolt

Whichever one fits in the deepest and grips the most when you start turning. The bigger the better as it's less likely to break.

Clockwise, but a set of anti clockwise drill bits can be a big help in some situations. Not only do they stop you potentially making it tighter, if it is relatively loose they can also draw the broken stud out.

Then the extractor broke off in the bolt .

Cry.... No seriously this happens sometimes. Try to use a very small drill bit next to the broken one. If you can make multiple holes around the broken bit, you can then use some long nose pliers to wiggle it free.

If the extractor breaks off and there is nothing you can do to free it. It basically mean the stud is seized and far to tight to come out this way. You will need to drill out the entire thing. Then either cut a new bigger thread or use a helicoil kit to insert a new thread. I think I'll make a video on this too actually.

The most important tool for this kind of job is patience. Remember the old motto for carpenters: MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. The most difficult thing for me to do, is to set aside my male ego, be patient, walk away and THINK, make a PLAN, gather the correct TOOLS. Also, WD40 is not a lubricant. It is a solvent. If you use it on bicycle chains, you will destroy them. "WD" came from Water Displacement. "40" came from formula no. 40. The best lubricant in this case would be PB Blaster, a PENETRATING LUBRICANT - - or something similar.
