How to Remove a Pressed-on Gear From a Creality 42-40 Stepper Motor

Here is a simple technique for removing a pressed-on feed gear from a Creality 42-40 stepper motor. This is accomplished by using a vice grip to squeeze the soft brass gear and loosen its grip on the motor shaft.
Then by placing the a corner of the vice grip's upper jaw on the motor shaft end and the lower jaw under the gear, the gear will pop right off with a gentle squeeze. This puts no stress on the motor itself.

Great technique. I was heating it up to no avail first. Likely i was too cautious with heat to not damage the motor. Key here seems to be to do the plier grips off center from the center axis/pinion, to deform the gear? At first, i worked on it with straight pliers that put pressure to the center. That did not work. Only after watching again, i realized you are doing it differently. I.e. using rounded pliers and attack the gear off center. For the final release press, i had to put an m2 bolt on top of the pinion to have more leverage. Thanks for taking the time to document this. Cheers.

I installed the stepper on a new Micro Swiss drive system that used a set screw to secure the drive gear to the stepper shaft.

Didn't even budge. Just taking chunks out of gear. Would have been easier if I just bought pneumatic cutter. Back to the drawing board.

My issue was that the gear teeth were smooth and can no longer feed the filament. Unfortunately i couldn't remove the gear this way, instead i used a rotatory tool with an engraving pick to re shape the teeth. Hope this helps.

@@Skully8998 I got it but now I just realized it's not the motor I need for the dual extruder. The shaft doesn't have the thread for the part I'm replacing. I dont know what motor I'm supposed to buy for it.

DAMN😂 WORKED LIKE A CHARM I DIDN'T HAVE SMALL ENOUGH GRIPERS SO I USED ONE OF THE OLD SCREWS TO PUSH ON TOP AND POP RIGHT OUT

Thanks! one of mine I had to pull a bit with and the 2nd one it just spun freely after the third squeeze. So much easier than heat or a puller.

Correct. The old gear will most likely be damaged. It is assumed here that we are replacing/upgrading it while avoiding damage or stress to the motor.
