Excellent video. Thank you! Here are two similar methods. Method 1: Drill some small holes around the outside ring of a metal cap-type tool. Then put the cap tool on the filter end. Next use self-tapping sheet metal screws through the drilled holes. Try to get at least 5 or 6 attaching the cap to the filter. Finally put your 3/8" drive on the end of the cap tool for filter removal. Method 2: If Channel Locks can only fit on the end, squeeze with one hand and use a large adjustable wrench to turn the Channel Locks.

Usage of Channel locks worked right away for me. I believe it's the best thing. The tools, what they sell at auto stores (which are shown at the beginning for 1st 2 min) worked for my on a worst way, they either slide, hard to operate in the tight space or making holes in the filter and all the oil is spilling on you. In fact, if you damage the filter, you can't drive the car, like asking for a help or making any planned trip, you will be stuck. Channel locks have a wider grip and if you have a tight space, you can have a good grip from the bottom of the filter.

Came here to say Thank you!! I've used many tricks before but couldn't get the filter off my ATV this year for anything. I have a filter socket, but the corners got rounded out on the filter. Tried the strap wrench and that was a joke. Tried the screwdriver method and it just ripped through the filter. Went and got a larger channel lock pliers and that worked like a champ. Plus I tried the Dewalt channel lock pliers, which have a different adjustment from other pliers, and I really like them. Thanks again!!

I had the same issue on my motorcycle. Was using the 'rubber' type wrench shown in the video, a socket on the end of the filter (filter was a K&N and had a 17mm socket but stripped it), and a metal-type oil filter wrench that was sliding due to trying to turn so hard. Ended up using a little bit of PB Blaster on the filter like in the video and instantly allowed me to turn using my metal oil filter wrench. WD40 might do it, but PB Blaster is a world of a difference in penetration and highly recommend.

thanks for the video - I have my filter is in tight quarters - tucked low behind the engine = once I took a hacksaw frame and attached a long bolt to the tip of it - and hammered the bolt through the filter - then this gave me enough leverage & torque to twist off that bugger. Kind of like the screwdriver method but with an offset and longer reach. Kept the tool I made in case I need to use it again :)

Thanks. I managed in the end, with a large hose clamp around the filter, with a piece of inner tube rubber wrapped around first, then hit the tight hose clamp with a long pipe and hammer such that the bolt of the clamp was on the tangent, like you speak of using a chisel. The chisel I tried against the hose clamp did not work. It would have been quicker for me to drive to an auto place spend the money on the vice grips type tool and try that, but anyway the clamp and pipe hitting it eventually worked, with multigrips to finish it off. Cheers.

The Sears Craftsman Auto-Adjustable universal oil filter wrench is a great product (and much cheaper than many of the other wrenches). Had an oil filter that was collapsed using a strap-type oil wrench. This wrench can fit even a collapsed filter housing, grip it and using a socket wrench, develop as much rotational torque necessary to remove even stubbornly stuck filters.

I managed to use the "negotiator"! Only had enough room to move the filter 1/8 inch after putting some wd40 at the lip. That was enough to allow me to use the skinny tool you said only works 25% of the time. I was way more careful to only tighten the new filter until it stopped and then another 3/4 turn which I was able to do by hand. I'll watch for any leaks next time I start up my boat. Cheers to you for offering up a bunch of solutions.

I used the cap option without success. Versus going back to the store. I figured I could drill a hole in the side of the removal cap the screw in a sheetrock screw through the hole and into the oil filter. This gave me the leverage of the cap and prevented the cap from slipping. Mine was still very hard to turn so after an inch of movement, I just drilled a second screw through both the cap and filter and put in a second sheetrock screw. This worked great and with very little oil leak! I was afraid just a screw driver would tear up the filter and leave a big mess. Problem solved!

My filter was so stuck that i tried several methods, and here's what I eventually did: Drill a small hole in the lowest point to drain, and another hole in the tip of the filter to let the air in so it drains faster. Once it's drained enough, figure out the best angle to jam a screwdriver into it, and drill the entry hole (I did it roughly half way along the filter). Ram or hammer a thick screwdriver into it (right through if you can). Twist. The amount of effort is much less than you think it will be, once you've got the torque of the screwdriver acting on it. Messy but it worked. Happy twisting :]

A strap wrench and chain wrench just crunched up the filter. Not much room for channel locks on my Ford Ranger. So, I used a 17 inch long flat blade screwdriver with a 3/8 inch wide tip like I as going to flip a pancake. The rubber gasket being the pancake. Just use a hammer to tap the screwdriver on the can right along the rim where the gasket is until it crushes the gasket and filter can inward toward the center axis. Did this for a small section about 1-1/4 inch long and then tapped off axis with the screwdriver to make it rotate. It's stuck because of the gasket. Just separate the gasket to reduce the removal torque needed. This was easy. I did drain the filter with a small hole beforehand and I jacked up the truck a bit to get more room. The actual tapping took less than 5 minutes.

hm, I would recommend also for DIYs, to glue a metal filter removal cup to the filter using some crazy metal to metal glue (there are many of them and you likely have one in household), let it time to set as glue instruction recommends ( glue I used took a night to harden ) then unscrew it. Usually it is a combination of stuck filter and very bad accessibility, so this method helps both, given you have wrench and extender. Your filter cup will be in trash bin along with you filter, but this is like $4-5, so kinda cheap price for a win.

One method that you did not mention that I found useful was to take a clean heavy duty rubber glove, and wrap it around the filter, using the glove as a grip rag. It makes removing the filter by hand easy.

My husband is trying to get the canister off of fuel water separator on his inboard. He said it won t come loose and it just keeps spinning. How would he do that? He used all those wrenchs but says she r just keeps spinning.

I used a cam operated filter wrench from autozone, but the 3 arms bent out and messed up the end of the filter, so I put the floor jack under the ratchet that was attached to the wrench to hold it hard against the filter and that worked. This wrench was made in China and the arms are soft steel. No good. I have ordered a set of cam type wrenches from a company called Lisle(made in USA). I think the cam type wrench is the way to go. I have 5 or 6 filter caps and they ALL have slipped. Check out this Lisle co.

why does it matter if you scrunch or put a hole in your oil filter?? If youre taking it off youre most likely changing it so why would it matter if it gets damaged?

He probably means if you want to check it and see if it's still usable. It shouldn't matter if you know how often to change it based on previous experience

+copedipper25 I would change it. But do you really think there aren't cheapasses out there trying to save their pennies over an oil filter?

metroboomin i guess, im a mechanic and ive seen 3 cases where a customer comes in complaining of an oil leak and i found that the oil filter has rotted and started leaking. When asked about the last time it was changed they all said they dont change the oil they just add and theyve been doing that for years lol

copedipper25 - Once you put a hole in your oil filter, then you MUST complete the job right then and there. The car can no longer be started or moved. If you do not jab a hole, you can still operate the vehicle till you are better prepared to complete the oil filter removal.

The screwdriver method is best for stuck filters in tight spots imho. Just used it today. Tried caps but they wouldnt fit (filter was a jiffy lube special, cheap pos that was a 2.2mm smaller diameter than the one my vehicle uses) and all wrenches but there just wasnt room for them. Punched through with the screwdriver after spraying with wd40 and off it came.

As far as tools, only have the strap wrench and no money/time to buy the vice grips. I had some WD40 and some sandpaper. Sandpaper gripped well, but I had to use the WD40 to get it to break loose. I don't consider myself particularly strong, just determined. I've used the screwdriver method before, but it is extremely messy.

I could'nt take it off so tried using a leather belt and a screwdriver thru the middle for leverage.Bent the screwdriver with no movement. Last thing I used was a large pipe wrench, that did the trick.
