Well, I managed to change it out. It's a bit different than the video...different way to take the dash cover off. Then I managed to find the slot to push the lever. It was very tricky to get in there. I used part of the inside of a pen, which was short and fit in the hole okay. Needed to give the cylinder a good tug to pull it free (I almost gave up). Sadly, it did not fix my issue, which I know am pretty sure has to do with the timing chain ugh...but I feel awesome that I managed to do this anyway (especially considering that I did not know know how to undo the negative battery terminal). you can try drilling out the tab or drilling into the lock cylinder around where the key broke off to make room and try to get the broken piece out somehow! Also you can just replace the whole ignition lock with the assembly it goes into! Its connected to the steering column with two snap off bolts I believe, use a chisel and a hammer to try to get them to turn! I guess before doing that you can always use the hammer and chisel to try and break and turn the ignition cylinder. GL

Ok. Thank you for the video!! One more question. If I get a new ignition, would I have to change anything else? Will it just lock back in place and start up?

thank you so much. I just took mine out of a 95 corona. it was super stuck so put a screw driver though the hole in the key for leverage. just saved me a call out fee.

Thanks for the video. 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe is very similar. To replace that ignition lock cylinder you will need to loosen the 4 bolts holding the steering wheel column. This pivots the column down allowing you to remove the cylinder (the white connector on top hits the dashboard).

What happens if i remove my 2007 Suzuki swift ignition switch and replace it with another used ignition switch which cames with its keys, Will i need to replace the computer box also? That's a lot less work than I imagined. I originally thought they were permanently fixed to the steering lock mechanism, and needed to be drilled out or something. Thanks for the good news and the explanation.

Hyundai elantra are all the same from 2001 to 2006 I just took an ignition out of a 2001 auto elantra and put it in my 05 elantra that is a 5 speed with keyless entry and it works great if anyone was wondering.

hmm, Probably not without damaging the lock cylinder (drilling.etc) why dont you just a someone to make you a key? it'll be easier and maybe even cheaper. If you shop around you can find a deal I am sure. GL

I have a 1998 toyota camry. When replacing ignition switch it came apart. I am having trouble putting it back together. I believe I have it correct but still won't work. There are 5 small springs and 2 small bearings. Do you know how it goes back together? Or do you have any idea where I could find it out. Thanks. Also it has two copper discs. One small and one larger. It seems to me it can only go one way. I am not sure I found all parts. Show less REPLY

Great video thank you. Can you do this procedure if the steering wheel is locked and key does not turn (into acc mode). I mean if that pin does not go all the way in and I cannot turn the key to make it go all the way in... what then? EDIT: I have removed everything but the pin does not go in and I cannot turn the key. Do I have to drill it? Is that the only way?

if you have no keys to turn to correct position get a drill and small screw driver.jam the screwdriver in against the retaining pin to stop it spinning and then drill it out.replace with new ignition if you don't have a replacement pin.

use a center punch and hammer . tap the bolt head in anti clockwise direction to loosen them .

So I never done it before and my car ignition is sort jam. I looked up autozone for ignition lock cylinder and it come with keys. My questions is would the key be the same as mine? Would it be able to open my door with those keys?

could u please do one for a 2000 sonata when I turn the key it just makes a click sound after a few tries it turns over but I have to wiggle the key

+Eric Steele Check your ignition switch, wiggle the wires at the end of the lock cylinder next time it does this and if starts up you need an ignition switch (electricl part of the assembly not the lock cylinder) also check out a video on my channel named How a cars starting system works for more info. gl

Any information about a 2000 Elantra? I'm currently trying to pull mine apart without wrecking it. No info on the net, like 90's Elantra's and 2001 and up but nothing on 2000.

RatchetsAnd Wrenches No, there is 2 roll pins to extract. I've managed to get it apart but it was difficult. I have to weld a part of the housing back together and the roll pins needed to be drilled to pull the cylinder out. I found out the release arm for the key and the mechanism for the steering lock needed to be worked to operate smoothly again.

Lone Wolf you can either replace the entire assembly or drill into the cylinder break it and turn it out. Than insert your new cylinder, gl

yes, drill directly into the center of the lock (imagine drill bit is your key). once you get so far in, step up the size of the bit. once you start doing it, you'll get a feel for it and see the results. the ignition cylinder will crumble and break a part and fall out. get one of those magnetic tip extendable tools and use that to pick up any leftover broken pieces and shavings. Put the new ignition cylinder in(optional), still using a screwdriver to start my car. LOL
