Leanr how to remove background noise in Audacity for FREE in 2023 with the latest version of Audacity. I wanted to do an updated tutorial on this since Audacity has changed slightly in its latest version. Removing background noise and applying the noise reduction filter is still very simple, but the interface has changed somewhat in the latest version.
Background noise can occur even in the quietest of rooms. It could be from your computer fan, general static, humming or buzzing, wind, and more. Luckily, we can remove this noise using a simple tool in Audacity.
Removing background noise from your audio or video files is very important to produce high quality video or audio files. This is important if you are a content creator on KZfaq, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram or any other social media platforms. This is also a great skill to have to clean up your podcasts or even to make your transcription files easier to transcribe and listen to. And best of all, Audacity is totally free! It's a tool that I use every day and you can use it on Windows, Linux, or Mac computers.
I'll show you where to download and install Audacity, and then the best way to filter our unwanted background noise in your audio or video file. I'll also show you how to fix the FFmpeg Library not found error and how to install this so you can also edit audio from video files.

Jennifer Marie, thank you for this detailed, easy to follow tutorial. Thank you also, for giving us a resolution to the FFmpeg Library not found error. Unfortunately, after following the instructions, I still have a "hisss" in my video. Also, when I try to amplify the sound and set the Peak Amplitude to -3, the Amplification automatically sets at 3.525 (?). when I go back to my video audio, the hissing is still there. Not sure if this makes a difference but I'm converting MiniDV to digital. Some of these tapes have a really annoying hiss.

Is there a way to isolate traffic noise, like cars accelerating? I recently recorded a dramatic play with an entire cast (that is set in the 1600s) and when I went in to edit the playback, there are car sounds under a lot of the audio. I tried Wavepad, but all the voices ended up sounding like robots, so it seemed counter productive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jennifer for this video. Your instructions are very easy to follow and helpful. I have 2 comments on your video 1) When you amplify in your video, you put a value of -3 for the new peak amplitude and it shows a value of 6.48db (Amplification db). When I carried out the same step and entered a value of -3 for the New peak amplitude, I got a negative amplification (db) of -3.297 (and not a positive value for negative amplification (db). Did I miss out on some steps? 2) I am trying to reduce noise in a video which is not as straightforward as your video. In my video, the sounds of typing on the keyboard and yawning seem to have been caught along with the audio and I am unsure how best to eliminate this noise. Pls advice. Thanks

What can you do if there's no spot to get a sample from? The audio if full from beginning to end?

When I click on amplify , the amplification DB is the same as a the new peak amplitude? If I drag the slider to -3, the amplification will also be set to -3

Thanks for the video. What i would like to see covered is how to reduce noise in a file which is not at the beginnig or the end but in the middle of the audio file. This makes it difficult to get a noise profile. How to handle such scenarios.

is there a reason it might not work? I used it last year and it worked fine. With a new laptop I have background hum from a fridge motor. I even left 5 seconds for the sample. But the wave form is not changing. I dont know what the sliders do to increase the effectiveness of the tool
