FOR YOUR SAFETY: Please wear a mask and eye protection if you decide to sand or cut a seashell without water to negate the dust. Air-borne particles from shells can be very damaging to your lungs!!
Also note: This would only work with shells that don't have much texture: cowrie shells and and some moonsnails would be my best recommendations for this type of sanding because of how smooth they typically are. For very textured shells, I would suggest muratic acid or hydrochloric acid - there are plenty of tutorials for that method online.
This was originally a video that I only had available on my Facebook Page. It was uploaded at the end of November 2022 as a follow up to a previous video on KZfaq: • Finding Seashells at L...
Let me know what you think... was it worth the hour or so of time that I put into it? Should I take this further to really finish it? Is it fine just the way it is?
For me, it took a lot of time to remove the calcification from the cowrie... I wouldn't want to dedicate that effort to just any shell, it should be something that I kinda know will look good after the work is done. It wasn't too boring as I was able to sit at the side of the bathtub and do this while watching something on my tablet. The outcome feels pretty nice; like a tumbled stone.

I didn't even realise that Point Cartwright and the surrounding beaches had such lovely seashells until I saw "Shellcade Shelling Down Under" - I admire him a lot, and wow, it seems like he's creating new shelling content on KZfaq? You can check out his amazing videos here: / shellcadeshellingdownu...

Thank you for the tip. I have some northern moon snails (NYC) that are still cloudy even after an acid bath. I will try the sand paper. Someone mentioned putting the cowrie in acid. I am not a specialist in seashells by far, but I have read and seen videos on YT mentioning not to place cowries in acid because they would lose their shine. Your cowrie has been sanded already, so it not make much of a difference as you may have already taken the shine off. Anyway, leaving the cowrie as it is makes it more interesting because you can see Nature’s work on it. ❤

G'day Oana 👋🏻🐚 Oh awesome! I'd love to see some before and after shots if you did feel like showing off after it's all done 😃 but no pressure, it's a bit of a selfish request of me 🤣 it does take a fair amount of time, but yeah, the result feels a bit like a tumbled stone: very cool. Definitely keep a trickle of water running over the shell for the whole time; you don't want to breath in any of the shells dust otherwise. Wet sandpaper is great, and of course you'll get a better finish with the higher grades. For getting the initial calcification off of this, I used lower grit, and then polished it more with 1500grit, but I've since gotten 2000 grit wet sandpaper to play around with too. I wish I could get higher grits at the auto store for an even shinier finish!! As for cowries in acid... I've tried it once before. I have not great feeling about it either. It worked to remove the calcification (never use it on shiny shells) but it left the shells feeling dull and a little pitted. It also ate away at them very quickly. A bit of mineral oil helped, but ahhh, I don't like it as much as shining up the rarer ones like this. For the one I did in this video, an acid bath would remove all of the shine for sure. The more common cowries, I'll just keep looking for a shiny fresh one at the beach ⛱️ so I don't really need to acid anything when I think about it. I think I started rambling 🤣 Anyhoo! Thank you for your thoughtful comment, I hope the sanding goes well for your moon snails 🐌 and thank you for watching my little tutorial!

G'day Kayle 👋🏻💖 Thank you, it really did come up quite nice... or at least, quite interesting?? I may go back over it again to see if I can get some of the missed calcification. Hehehe, I think shelling in 2023 will be awesome 😎 it's still another week until I'm "back" though, but hopefully I'll have a wonderful adventure that you can look forward to 🥰 Thank you so much; see you in 2023 🎉🥳🎉

G’day Pam 👋🏻❤️ Thank you for watching the video (again!) I’m so pleased that it came out looking… good? interesting? less white and powdery? 🤣 I think I will play with it a little more to see if I can get out those final areas of calcification. OOOOHH NO PAM!! You got the Christmas COVID 😱🤧😭 Wow, first your scraped up arm, then a cold, then your tooth, and finally the ‘rona -all amongst the busiest time of the year. Oh gosh, this isn’t even something to joke about, I hope you’re doing okay, even with the meds, being sick is never fun or easy 😔 Do you think you’ll be over it in time for your birthday cruise? Get plenty of rest, I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts 🙂 Happy New Year to you as well, see you in 2023 🥳 Again, lots of well wishes for your health ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hi Maddie, I like what you did with the Arabian Cowry. I love how you are so cheerful, happy and loads of fun. We need more young women like you. I am happy to call you my friend and you are the best person to come into my life in 2022. Thank you for your videos and your chatting with me. You made this year a lot bearable. Love you. Trudy in PA and Bearsy too to Ninja also

G’day Trudy 👋🏻❤️ Yesssss I’m glad you liked it; it’s kinda one of those things depending on how shellers feel about altering/damaging seashells instead of leaving them as how they naturally are. I like to think that I re-kindled it’s old beauty?? 2022 was also an incredible year for me as well; I learned that I have an amazing passion and enthusiasm for shelling! I’m so happy that I can share my new hobby with the world, and that I could meet such amazing people. You are, of course, one of the most lovely friendships that I have discovered this year, and I’m so glad that we could support and encourage each other about a variety of topics. Thank you so much for being here for me. Let’s raise our metaphorical champagne glasses to another wonderful year in 2023. Thanks you so much for watching, Trudy and Bearsy 🥳🐚👋🏻🥰🤩

I would put it in an acid bath to get rid of the rest of the calcium.

G’day Cathy 👋🏻 Acid is an option, however, I would personally choose not to do that because it would strip away the lovely glossy finish that I’ve polished onto the cowrie. For acid, I think I would choose to do an acid dip first to remove the calcification, and then sand it to make it shine ✨ although, the acid really eats away at cowries quickly, so I’m very hesitant to use it on this… I would probably go over the places I missed with sandpaper while dry, perhaps? I wish acid would make the shell all shiny and polished like this - it would certainly to take a lot less time than the sanding 😅 Thank you so much for watching, Cathy, your insight it spot on, I’m just picky and want a cowrie that feels more like a tumbled stone from the crystal store 🤣🥰

How do you get the snail out though
@SandCoffeeRocks
@SandCoffeeRocks 2 ай бұрын
G'day Dream 👋🏻🐚 Oh no, the snail is no longer in the shells that I collect! I make sure they're unoccupied before taking them home; I only take non-living (empty) shells. Thankfully with the shells I find here, they usually never have remnants of the original creature inside because nature (other marine life) cleans it out very quickly. It's a snail and eat snail world out there! Cleaning out a shell with part of a creature still inside is tricky; and it's something that I've struggled with during the few times I've come across a shell like that. Unless I love the shell, I usually leave a stinky one behind because it's not worth the trouble. Thanks for watching 🥰
