How to Remove Carbon Build Up - Gummed up Pistons - 1ZZ

I wanted to check what the effects were of the thinners in my engine. Did they do anything to remove carbon? what better then to test it on the bench. The pistons on my 1zz have gummed up oil control rings and blocked oil drain holes and hence the engine smokes badly! We will find a cure.

I'll share with you my trick I did this on a BMW first step I got the supplies. I got a can of B12 chem tool a heavyweight oil like the heaviest weight I could find one quart and I got a bucket of diesel. The first thing I did was add about a quart of diesel into the existing oil. I ran the engine until it was warm I did not rev or drive. Then I performed a normal oil change, changed the filter replaced the drain plug and then filled the entire crankcase as much as I could with diesel I put the cap back on it. And let it sit for about 2 days. Next I drained the diesel which came out black. Then I added the one quart of heavyweight oil and the diesel until the fill line on the dipstick. I ran the engine for about 20 minutes. And then I added half a can of B12 chem tool in the crank case after another minute or two I shut off the engine. Lastly I took the spark plugs out and used a syringe to squirt a bit of B12 chem tool into the cylinders. I let the B12 evaporate until it was just a thin wet layer. After another day I replaced the oil after rinsing it with some cheap stuff changed the filter the car was noticeably quieter at idle and after driving it to the post office and back which is about 7 miles I rev the engine there was no more smoke. It's been about 6 months since I've done that and still isn't burning a drop of oil that I can detect. Best of luck to you and thank you for documenting what you do this can probably help a lot of people.

Sounds like a good process. I did consider diesel but thinners is a solvent and as is evident melts the carbon.

Such an interesting experiment. Looking forward to the 1zz getting the treatment.

very cool experiment, I've seen a few videos suggesting to use heavy duty oven cleaner. Also seen a guy boiling degreaser then carefully lower the entire engine into the mix. goes in black with caked on oil and comes out like a freshly milled engine block. Hope this was helpful in some way 👍🏽

IMO give it another try with the thinners for 2 weeks, I think it would be beneficial to circulate hot coolant in the engine with an axternal pump to help the thinners with heat ... anyway, good luck, looking fwd Your next video

Great vid- try the thinners with a harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner with thinners - it’s the dogs bollox

Are you mixing the ultrasonic cleaner with thinners? Or does the ultrasonic cleaner contain thinners already? I am guessing this is the stuff they use to clean injectors?
@mattfairy5927

@@ModorFix so if you use an ultrasonic cleaner that has heating DONT heat the thinners (fire risk) but you can use de greaser or carb cleaner or injection cleaner- you can heat that safely. If you go through the cycle (cleaning cycle) mine is 8 minutes, 10-15 times and soak over night, pistons, valves etc come up Like new!! Keep us Posted, great channel

Fhats good you showrd a more detailed vid on how the thinners work. On sidenote are you able to take them out with engine still in the car?
@ModorFix
@ModorFix 2 жыл бұрын
You could, but the only thing that would remain in the car would be the block, so a wasted exercise really. Better of pulling the lump

Seems berrymans b12 ( if can get in uk) is way to go to dissolve carbon. Theres alot of people trying to solve this issue of oil rings and piston holes clogging up with carbon in these motors. It seems soaks can get the rings unstuck sometimes, but nothing seems to unclog those piston holes. That was quite a risky approach filling whole engine but nice you tried it. I have an idea that might work to clear the holes without removing pistons: fill engine with paint thinners or berrymans or whatever product and oil , but fill to just below the top of the piston when piston is at bottom of stroke. Turning over the engine the underside of the piston will slap into the oil/thinners, hopefully enough force to start to dislodge the carbon in the holes. I envisage that the motor will need to be turned over by starter motor ( or similar) for a long period for this to work, maybe a couple of days. Spark plugs will be out of course. I think starting the engine in this scenario toooo risky. So some sort of power supply direct to starter motor and run it for a few days, the piston slapping into the oil/thinners for a long period might have a chance of clearing those oil holes...............what ya think? I'm following thread of this guy who is trying solve same issue, in fact I think there will be people all over the world tyring to solve this issue, been going on for many years. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5-kgbujlb_SnWw.html

That's a great idea. I was thinking about that. I should have turned the engine by hand over the span of a few days. I would have to let the thinners out above the piston through the plug holes or suck it out. I have thought about doing a round 2 with gun clean as gun clean has acetone in it lol!

@@ModorFix if someone sells berrymans b12 over there, it seems to get best results for dissolving carbon, if you do a round two please consider my idea, its the only way I can think of getting pressure and solvent into those holes. But I'm pretty sure it would require the engine to be turning over for a long period continuously ( I'm guessing 2 or 3 days, a big guess), each rotation the underside of the piston head slaps into the oil/solvent combo. So the piston lifts out of the oil, then on its way back down just near the bottom, it hits the oil/solvent. I doubt a starter motor would be up to it, would more likely require take off the drive belt and run the motor via a belt to electric motor of low rpm, but starter motor might be up to the job, not sure how many amps its would draw, would require some decent 12v power source. I wish I could think of some other way of doing it, but haven't come up with anything else.

@namenotshown9277 I have got another engine on standby and I will be rebuilding this one so there is nothing to lose for me in doing it. Apart from a few gallons of oil of course and solvent. However.. if the piston control rings are stuck and worn unevenly then there is no way back is there?
@namenotshown9277

@@ModorFix If the rings are stuck, seems the issue is whether or not the cylinder bore is worn, the piston tends to rub against the cylinder wall if oil ring is stuck and can wear the wall down in one spot, I think then you have an issue. this video shows the cylinder scoring at at 9:27 mark. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJp6hpqB3si6Yp8.html I'm guessing its the piston hitting the side wall rather than the rings but i'm not sure, that guy has another video where he shows the severe scoring with a borescope but I'm not sure which video it was.
