That black handled staple remover was a game changer for me and your video also. I had watched other videos and it was taking me forever. I am 70 years old and don't have all the strength in my hands to pull out the staples that only came out halfway. Whoever laid the padding at my house loved his staple gun and went nuts with it. This little tool pulled the whole staple out most of the time. The name was Crain 126 staple remover.

Thanks for the upload! BTW you're crazy for covering those floors with carpet!! It'll cost less then $200 bucks to refinish them and you'd never have to deal with them for another 10+ years.

It was a tough call and we were back and forth a couple times. Part of the decision was based on time, and the ability to get the carpet done in a day. Also it's easier to throw out bad carpet with bad tenants.

@@TheSnekkerShow I definitely hear yah about the timing issue. But I've ripped up COUNTLESS carpets in rentals. I've seen some crazy insane issues happen to wood floors underneath the carpet. MOLD like CRAZY, warped floor boards, broken floor boards, lice, mites, bed bugs, and did I mention the mold 😷🤮 that floor is already near perfect consider refinishing next time around ✌🏻😎🍻 take care, thanks again.

Thank you for this video. We just removed old carpeting in our house that was built in 1965. Hundreds of staples and sheared off nails in the hardwood floors and staircase. Taking many hours to remove them with needle nose pliers and I need good tools to do the job. At this point we might throw in the towel and put down carpeting instead of refinishing the floors...the sheared off nails will need to literally be drilled out and then holes replugged in the floor

Sounds like a tough job. Depending on how many nails and how much is exposed, it might be cleaner and easier to tap them below the surface with a nail set, and then fill the holes.

Yes, those tools obviously will get the job done. The thing I hate is that you have to see the orientation of the staple to get the blade under them and most of the staples I need to get out are covered with that foam enough to make that determination nearly impossible. The tack strips are easy by comparison, using the kamikaze shovel technique.

I tried pulling narrow staples. Alleged not flooring staples that someone used far more of than probably necessary of flooring staples to install subsurface below vinyl. Narrow enough that I wasn't going to buy any puller I saw, including these, just for that floor. Most of those I tried with various tools I could tuck in, including a nail setter, broke with one or both halves stuck in and nothing to grip what remains. Was left to just hammer them down as the labor cost to get them out and make it nice will be more than putting another surface atop them.

Thank you for this video. Planning to use the black gripped tool on my carpeted stairs (hardwood underneath). Would you recommend filling the holes with anything before I just place sticky carpet treads on top?

I'm glad it was useful. Filling the holes would be unnecessary unless you're planning to leave the wood exposed.

When someone gets hold of a staple gun they seem to lose the pattern of themselves. I had some flooring taken up and there are about 1,000 of them to remove.

Just ordered two of those removers. Bought a house which the 30 year old carpet which was a high quality was also used as a piss toilet.

Yeah my carpet guy used 300+ per a room and with a air stapler so most are too low to even use those tools so screw driver and pliers it is. Yeah my wrist hurts...

That's no fun. You might try filing the edge of the bottom piece, like a chisel, so it's easier to wedge under the staples. Good luck.

Don't worry about the hardwood floors with pet stains the black stains can't be removed the floor is gone. You don't need to remove the staples rub your foot over the staples to remove the pad under the staples. Using a flat hoe type scraper is a quick way to remove the staples. Carpet layers will gladly remove the staples if you are willing to pay for the extra prep. Time is money removing staples is time-consuming and can easily double the time it takes to install the carpet.

It was a tough call. It looked good from far, but it was far from good. Some of the rooms had some damage beyond staple holes, and seemed more practical to carpet over everything and get it back on the market.
