I think I ended up doing that one too.

All I did was trim off a little top section of the tree root & I did this a few years ago. The tree is still standing!

I know exactly what you mean. I'm sure there's a way to safely remove some of the top trailing roots but an arborist would need to tell you that as I'm just "an average Joe"...!

A couple bad storms & nothing happened to the tree. It's still there & the grass is covering the remaining roots pretty good I might ad...

@@videojoeshows I bought a device called the root hog that can be attached to your weed eater. I have 13 pine trees and the roots are a pain to deal with mowing the grass. BUT I'm kind of concerned because I live in hurricane country in the southeast, I hope it doesn't make the root structure weak because that's what anchors the tree.

@@darktoadone5068 Here's what I may suggest. Go to your local garden center & discuss with them what you have in mind & see what they say. I am not a landscaper by any means & I would hate to steer you in the wrong direction by any means. Take a picture of your root hog & make sure you show that to a salesperson when you go to garden center.....

Tree update.....The roots are still there & have grown a little bit more since I chiseled the top off. The tree has gotten bigger too so I put some dirt in between the void of some of the tree roots in the grass so the lawn mower doesn't bump over roots as much & the grass will grow up through the bit of dirt I put down. I'm sure I will probably have more root issues in the years to come but we like the tree for the shade it gives to the house in the summer months. I guess I could dig out the exposed roots in the grass but more than likely the tree will lose some of it's strength & could blow down in heavy winds if I were to remove the roots that are exposed. I guess the moral of the story is don't plant trees in your grass even if the place where you buy the tree says it's ok & the type of tree you're getting will not grow surface related roots. Take your chances I guess. Look at most trees in yards with grass & you will probably see some tree roots depending on what type of tree. We could remove the tree & plant another one too. This one drops sticky/sappy stuff in the summer so a plus would be to just get rid of it & plant something else....! Thanks for stopping by!

Ha! Did you cut the entire root out? What I did here was just shave off the top that was sticking up above the grass so the root was still in tact! I guess your tree should be fine depending on how big your tree root was so it doesn't tip over in high winds. Thanks for stopping by!

Well I guess that's a good question. I actually don't think it will though as I did this to this particular tree over a year ago & it's still ticking away getting even bigger around the concrete border trim I fixed around it. The border trim is now all wonky again but the tree roots seem to be just under the grass as the grass grew back around the bits of root I shaved off with my chisel. Eventually I expect the tree roots will show their ugly head again & the lawn guy will keep shaving off the top of the roots with his lawn mower. Not sure what can be done other than chopping off the entire roots that are being exposed & that could then possibly harm the tree or make it weak in a wind storm. If you really have a tree you like then my advice would be to ask someone at a hardware store in the gardening area what they would do. Maybe take a picture of the tree you have on your phone so you can show someone what type of tree you have & maybe they can give you better advice as to what you can do. Some trees happen to have tree roots that don't burrow down very far rather they extend out shallow that then leads the roots to come up in the grass. Not sure what else I can do but I will continue to shave down the roots when they get bigger & if the tree ever dies then it will give me a chance to plant a different type of tree for next time...after doing a little research for what type of tree will do good there in my area as well as in the grass. @@videojoeshows LOL. If ya dont know, ya might not wanna be giving advice. And you dont seem to know what you'd do if the roots were large..as are the protruding roots from my flowering Maple. My tree is over 30 years old and I'm not interested in killing it..so moving on to find a resolution that will work without damaging the tree.

Surface roots getting removed will not harm a tree- are you joking? The most important roots are way way under and around the bottom of the tree. @Sharon and others chisel away. Have you not seen the root systems of trees? Their massive. Exposed roots cause trip hazards which could lead to an insurance claim.

@@sued3512 If you watched the entire video you would see that I only chiseled the top edge portion of two tree roots so I don't really think the tree was compromised much. Thanks for your message & for stopping by...
