Melissa Maker, cleaning expert, pits 3 pet hair removal tools against each other to see which one comes out on top!
Tara1979Tara (who is called 1979Tara1979 in the video - LOL) asked: Hey Melissa, how do I remove pet hair from my upholstery?
Melissa shows how to remove cat and dog hair from a duvet cover using a lint roller brush, a rubber pet hair brush, and the Pledge Fabric Sweeper.
In the video, we find that the rubber brush does not work very well, that the lint roller works well but requires a lot of 'maintenance' due to the stickers filling up quickly and creating a lot of garbage, and finally, the Pledge Fabric Sweeper requires some extra passes to get all of the hair up but because it's so easy to use and quite effective, we love it.

A wet rubber glove. It works brilliantly. Clothes, upholstery, carpet etc. Put glove on hand. Put hand under tap. :p run your gloved hand over the surface you want to clean. Rinse and repeat. Yellow rubber glove at dollar store = $1. I use this as step #1, and then use a lint roller to get any stubborn little bits that I notice after. Even water on your bare hands rubbed over clothes...it get the bulk of the hair off. Mom of a leonberger, husky cross and cat, approved method.

I use a dirt devil ultra hand vac to get hair off of furniture, blankets, catbeds, recliner, and small corners. It works really good. It pulls off all the cat hair and beats out dust. It has a spinning brushroll. You can hear how it beats the couch. It has microfresh filtration and uses bags. It smells fresh when it's ran. It costs around $30 at Wal-Mart. I really recommend it. It uses a cord so it never loses power.

I was just about to post the same tip about the Pledge product. The back and forth motion makes a huge difference in how much pet hair you pick up. I have never had a problem with the pet hair coming back out like another commenter said. I swear by this thing! Great for getting pet hair off of lamp shades as well.

The lint roller also works great on suits, and being so cheap many office workers have one in the car and one in the office for quick cleans of their suits (as well as several in the house). But when my bed sheets (or a duvet cover in the video example) get covered in cat hair, it really does seem a waste (despite each lint sheet costing about 1.5c each) to go through multiple sheets. But having watched this video, I think the best solution is for a combination of the Pledge Fabric Sweeper AND lint roller. ie. Sweeper to really quickly remove most of the hair, then the lint roller to really quickly get the final bits of hair with only one or two sheets.

New comment on an old post but with the Pledge product, make short, back and forth motions and it will pick up a ton of hair faster. Also, don’t pop the rollers out - there is a switch on the top end that you use to lock and unlock the bottom from the top to clean out the hair. If you pop the rollers out, you take a chance at breaking the area where the rollers are held, rendering the product useless. I’ve had mine for years and I love it. White bed linens with 5+ cats! I only use the lint roller for my clothes and the brush is useless (IMHO).

The two best things I use for my three cats are the rubber gloves (wet them first -- they pick up more when they are wet); and a small squeegee. The squeegee works great on bigger surfaces like couches. I also have success with a wire brush on a suede couch.

I have used the Pledge fabric sweeper for a long time now, and I love it. It actually works better than you are showing, because you are not using it properly in this video. It says right on the box to slide it "side to side in short strokes" because of the directions of the rollers, this motion scoops all the hair to the center to collect in the sweeper.

Great video! I have 2 large dogs and if I don't vaccum every other day it's like a 'hair explosion'! I wash my duvet covers and sheets atleast once a week or else I am choking on hairballs. Thanks for your video. I have an Italian Greyhound who sheds his tiny hairs like crazy all over the bed. The sticky tape roller brush takes too much time, creates too much waste and will always be an ongoing expense. It takes 20 minutes to thoroughly de-hair our emperor size bed. I can't take it anymore. I even tried using my Dyson. Besides being awkward, it just doesn't work on soft/fabric surfaces. I found those self-cleaning roller brushes on AliExpress for just a couple quid (a couple dollars). Just ordered one and will arrive in about a month.

The brush is a great tool for harder surfaces. It's great for automotive use. It doesn't remove the hair, but rather gathers it up so you can vacuum it away. Instead of long stokes you do lots of short strokes.

I have the same problem with my beagle. Her hairs are so thick and stiff that they actually get stuck into fabric. I didn't have any luck with the pledge sweeper either. I had to buy a new vacuum that was designed to pick up pet hair. It's a pricey option but worth it in the long run! Another cool thing you could do is get a de-shedding tool to use on your dog. I bought one and my dog sheds a lot less. Hope this helps!!

I don't think you touched on this, but when you started using the second product on your cat at the end, it got me thinking, another great way to prevent pet hair from being too bad, is not only to stay on top of vacuuming, but to groom your animal daily or as often as is recommended for your type of pet.

That’s right that rubber brush is called a Curry brush it removes loose hair from shedding cats and dogs. There is also a shampoo & conditioner and brushes called FURminator it works really well on deshedding your pets if you groom at home along with a high power dryer it will help with excess hair along with allergies, asthma. It helps with the hair build up. Good luck

I did not read all the comments, or hunt through to see if anyone suggested this. as back ground, i use to work as a pet groomer and had to deal with hair everywhere obviously. My very Fav product is the Microfiber head pet hair brushes. (will link) you run this over your cloths in the direction indicated on the brush and it picks up lint and animal hair, then just run your hand in the opposite direction to clean off what it's picked up. Anyhow i like this better then the sticky rolls, because you don't have so much waste and paper and there are many different kinds online you can buy... long strokes for general pick up, sort strokes for stubborn hair. Also, the rubber brushes work best with short strokes, i have a full rubber broom i use at home for getting stubborn hair out of carpet. www.amazon.com/Home-Store-10-inch-BRUSH-Double/dp/B0061WRUA4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1412289503&sr=8-3&keywords=lint+brush

The furminator is great, but for a less costly brush, the "shed ender" is the same tool. I used to groom dogs and cats, and I think the $40 furminator and the $10 shed ender work just the same! Plus it's a little smaller so your kitty enjoys it more. Good luck ,shedding can be a nightmare to deal with.

what also woks is rubber gloves. and the squeegee is great on carpet and helps to keep you from constantly having to declog your vacuum. what i like to do is "sweep" my carpeted bedroom with a big squeegee and then vacuum. (i guess if you have an awesome vaccum you wouldn't have to constantly declog it tho... mine is pretty cheap -.-")

The rubber brush actually works quite well if you know how to use it. I breed Persians and Himalayans and I have 2 or 3 different types of rubber brushes like the one you used in your video. You need to use short brushing motions in the same direction, and the hair will ball up so you can pick it up and throw it in the trash. If I didn't have this brush, I'd NEVER get my cat trees clean! They really are amazing, when you know what you're doing with them.

I have the kids play with balloons in the hairy areas and then have them take those outside and pop them taking most the pet hair with them...its fun...but doesn't work completely but it helps get the most of it out of the house (of course after popping they throw in the trash)...so its a fun way to clean pet hair

The Pledge product should be used in sort of a back and forth motion so that the two roller bits bring the fur into the container. Way better than a lint roller, especially if you have fur-covered fabric with a loose weave that fut gets embedded in rather than the kind of fabric your bedspread is made of. However, you did enlighten me in regards to removing said roller bits. Now why did I never think of doing that instead of cutting a hole into the plastic bit to remove the fur?

I do the vacuum/ hand held vacuum/ rubber gloves/ tape stuff and it all works pretty well. However what do I do with a blanket? I try laying it on a hard surface - couch, floor, bed - but it keeps bunching up as I remove the hair (dog hair). Can you please give me any suggestions? Many thanks.
