In this tutorial, we remove rain and snow from several plates using Foundry's Nuke. It also works very well to make clean plates and can be achieved on any compositing application. Timestamps below. Please note the techniques used in this video can be used on any compositing application. Topic suggested by my Patreon Kim. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for making so much content! It's a big feat to do all of that, and be active in the industry, and maintain interactivity with so many people. Kudos! I kept thinking about the train and I noticed one approach could be to match move a long plane (or several small planes [maybe Cessna..]) to the side of the train (ok a little difficult to land), then project the train onto the plane(s), then time median/echo a plate of just the train, then project back onto the train. Windows might be an issue (planes on a train, Windows might crash...) but a smaller one.

When i have to remove snow, i always end up doing my own timeecho with a lot of timeoffset nodes and a merge. the key is to use the min operation : since the snow is most of the time brighter than the background, the min operation removes it
@HugosDesk
@HugosDesk 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is also a good technique but I find that it does not work in a lot of shots where the snow is grey or less bright like a daytime shot. It also does not work in Rain. Anyway, the min operation did not work in the Leonard in Slow motion shot because of the rain and it did not work in the street shot with the dude walking because of the heavy compression. It would work on the staircase shot or sure. Thanks for your suggestion, maybe one day I will do a sequel to this video since there are more ways of doing the same thing here. Thanks for watching and your suggestion.

Hey Hugo, thank you so much for the video. When dealing with these slightly moving handheld shots, wouldn't it be possible to first stabilize the footage, then do your time echo and frame median and then matchmove the footage back into place? This way you would theoreticaly get rid of the ghosting thats being created from the moving camera. Also a collegue of mine showed me a neat little trick with the time-echo: Out of the box it lacks am min function, but you can set it to max and put a invert node before and after the time echo. This cleans up bright stuff like snow and rain better than using average. Greetings from Germany - Matze

Hi Hugo, thanks for your video. Ask a question, I want to clean the static dirt of lens. I need to create a mask about the dirt of lens for set cleanup area. There is a way to get it by manual. But a good way is to get it by procedure. Caculate the result after analysis serval frames. I don't know if exist in nuke about this function. I beleve it's feasible, hope your reply.

Hi Hugo, thank you for this one! I watch all your videos even if I'm not in the film industry at all, it's always a good time to be aware of these kind of techniques! I was wondering what's your configuration on the new Mac Pro ? Did you go for a full pre-setup from Apple, or some custom hardware from third-party manufacturers ? Thank you in advance if you can answer to me :) See you !

I bought the cheapest configuration possible minus the CPU. I got the 28 core, 32GB Ram, 1TB drive and the 580X. At the time I was not aware we could upgrade the CPU otherwise I would have gotten the 8 core. I recommend getting the cheapest possible and upgrading everything yourself. I then got 256GB of Ram from 3rd party and got a 3rd party AMD Radeon VII 16GB. I also have 2 more GPUs for extra render power. I have 2x Radeon Pro Duo 32GB and the Afterburner card for FCPX and DaVinci. I am making a full video review. It will be out very soon.

Just a quick add , you can just hit the replace checkbox in the roto node to replace to the new alpha. I also prefer to use frame blend to do this and you can add time clip and set to bounce the start frame and the last frame. That way you won’t miss any length of the footage.
@HugosDesk
@HugosDesk 4 жыл бұрын
I do know all of that! I have been using Nuke for 15 years! Btw Frame Blend will not work on these shots! I have tried but it could work on simpler shots with less movement. Anyway thanks for watching

HI Hugo.I just want to ask you (unrelated to the video) when you apply lens distortion to cg renders it causes stretching in the edges of the frame. How do you fix this. Do you scale it up? Love the videos.Thank you for sharing your knowledge to all of us.
@HugosDesk
@HugosDesk 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. You need to render extra pixels in CG to compensate for that stretching. It’s called overscan. Try to find that option on your render engine.

why are you using roto over rotopaint in the snow exemple at 20 minutes? (I haven't noticed what you used in the other exemples). Sorry if it's a very basic question, but I always just use rotopaint like I was taught since it has more options. Just wondering if there is somethin that is better in roto instead of rotopaint in this case.

Hey Hugo, What do you do when you have a grainy shot? Wont the Time Echo and Median take out the crispness of the original image?

Depends on the shot and you could stabilise section by section and reverse the match move. That should work.

@@JulianAbreu Windows 10 is fine, it's pretty good but we can't use Windows in the big companies. It's too expensive and too closed a system. This is why the VFX industry uses Linux. Open, free and custom.

Also, with the shot that needed tracking, this process breaks the concatenation. I guess adding a log2lin before and after the tracker, and switching the filter to something like lanczos4 could bring a bit of sharpness back (sorry i'm a bit picky sometimes ^^)
@HugosDesk
@HugosDesk 4 жыл бұрын
Well, sometimes you can't remember to do everything perfectly! Sometimes you forget stuff! I always try to keep concatenation at all times but I did forget this time. Since KZfaq does not support video replace or annotations anymore I can't fix it without losing all the views or monetization. Btw it is such a small comp that concatenation wouldn't even matter in the long run performance-wise. And yes you are being very picky for a free tutorial on youtube. You are free to make your own tutorial if you would like. I would be very happy to see your techniques. I would even share the video with my community if the video was good enough! Thanks for much for the feedback and have a great day.

Another way to remove snow is making a “sandwich” of INVERT > TIME ECHO (max) > INVERT. Since the snow is white one can imply that in most cases it’s only visible when it’s brighter than whatever is behind each snow flake. With that in mind, what we are looking for is a MIN operation, that would keep only the minimum pixel value between two pixels (bg dark / snow bright). As the time echo does not have a MIN operation but instead a MAX, we need to invert before applying it and revert it back at the end. If camera moves than stabilizing would be necessary. Sure it’s not the solution for every shot but one more to have in mind ;)
@HugosDesk
@HugosDesk 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is true, that would work really well for snow over darker backgrounds. In the case is these shots it’s difficult because of the darkness and the compression. And it would work on Rain. Anyway thanks so much for the suggestion. Maybe I will one day do that one as a video. Thanks

@@AberrantArt Keep in mind that film pays less but it is long term, sometimes 3, 4 or even 6 months contract. Commercials could be a few weeks only. Comercial is less stable. Please note the prices I posted are from places like The Mill, DNeg, ILM, MPC, etc. Very high-end VFX houses. I don't know prices on smaller places. I also do not know about staff rates, like full-time employment. I assume it is much less but you have more stability, retirement, and other perks.
