Awesome vid chap ! I just did a '78 CB200 tank....used 9.5%HCL brick acid, filled about half way and shook and tilted the tank every twenty minutes over 7 hours, no pitting from the acid at all, bare metal like you buy angle iron inside ! I just filled the tank to the brim with White Vinegar to do a final rinse out to get the interior spotless.

Great idea and cheaper than chemical treatments. I use diluted black treacle or molasses for decades. It works great and is cheap to mix up enough to fill a 30 gallon plastic drum, and seems to last forever. It starts to smell really bad after a couple of years though.

Excellent demonstration for us with rusty metal tanks. Now, new bike have molded plastic with painted covers. Don't that take the fun out of it? Where did they hide the catalytic converter on your 2005 or newer motorcycle? DK, ASE master, retired!

Instead of putting nuts and bolts to break up the rust, use a metal chain and shake it around. It works.

Thanks for this. What was the product that supposedly reacts badly with new gas or fuel injector cleaner?
@CycleFab
@CycleFab 3 жыл бұрын
Red-Kote is the name of the product. The reason why, is that Red-Kote is soluble in acetone. Acetone is used in some if not many fuel tretments and probably used as an additive in pump gas. I use to use this product many, many years ago without issue, but now, after many attemps all I get are failures. Not sure about the latter though, I have no idea the type of additives that are in fuel now, but the gas we have today with ethanol is really hard on engines that are not designed for it.

Great video. How much acid should I use in a 3 gallon tank? I’m thinking 50/50 mix with water. Would that be sufficient?
@CycleFab
@CycleFab Жыл бұрын
Muriatic acid is a dilution of Hydrochloric and water of 35% to 65%. This is what I use, I don't know what a 50/50 mix would do. BTW, if you do mix acid and water remember to add acid to water. NOT water to acid!!

I use to use Red-Kote many years ago and it worked fine. But now it doesn't seem to work well at all, and I think it is due to the additives in the pump gas that we have now. I use Caswell tank liner now, it's an epoxy and in my opinion the best that I have used so far. The only thing that can degrade epoxy is methylene chloride or extrem heat.

What do you use to remove the WD40 before you fill the tank with fresh gas? i am going to keep my tank in my garage for a while. Thanks in Advance
@CycleFab
@CycleFab 3 жыл бұрын
Lacquer thinner is what I use, also acetone will work. You'll need to do this before you reinstall the tank. It doesn't take much lacquer thiner or acetone to clean wd-40 out. Btw, wd-40 is nothing more than kerosene with some additives so any strong solvent will break it down.

I don’t really know what the purpose of the vinegar is. I went straight to the acid but found out the hard way that if you dry it out and don’t get an oil or full tank of gas in there quick it will literally flash rust in minutes. Oh well live and learn. Thanks for vid.

I spray wd 40 in my lawn mower to make it scream. A little wd 40 in gas won't hurt anything.

I used vinegar before but I ended up lot more leaks, does it eat the metal.....? I neutralized it with detergent and baking soda but it might not neutralized completely...!

Vinegar disolves rust, you'll need to use a tank sealer to stop the leaks.

I actually used fiberglass resin as a sealant but may be because of E10 petrol some resin devolved in petrol and then damaged carburetor....!

Do you have flash rust issues? I did a tank with vinegar and it immediately flash rusted after cleaning out the tank with water. It was light, but significant enough to cause problems a year later. I’m planning on trying again with a different rust remover prior to sealing, but I worry about flash rust again. Any tips to avoid this?
@CycleFab
@CycleFab 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! To prevent flash rust, coat the inside of your tank with oil/WD-40. This is what I do. If you are going to coat the inside of your tank you'll have to clean the oil/WD-40 out, I use lacquer thinner or acetone. Make sure you get all of the oil out or the tank liner will not work. Rinse the tank several times with these solvents. -Thanks for watching.

What cycle Fab is telling you works as "WD-40" is water displacement, develop for electronics in WW-II. My grandad, electrical engineer in 33, ran field generators for mobile radars. Olive Drab cans said "WD" only, don't know where the 40 comes from other than marketing. But in the automotive as a tech, alcohol is distilled ethanol and denatured means it is mixed with a compatible product at 1-2%. Otherwise, transporting is subject to ATF tax. 1 gallon of ethanol will hold 7 tables of water, boom, absorbed. Any more, it separates at drops to the bottom of a contain as we used glass for demonstrating. Tomatoes are acidic, ethanol eats into the pipe line, so it's transported by semi or rail tankers, but mixed with gas. Not very economical if you look at specific GMO seeds that have higher starch, to produce sugars to ferment. You can make ethanol or non-filter whiskey (Moon-Shine) from straight sugar. But in the field, contracts signed, dedicated transport, fertilizer (Made with Petroleum) or not eat for 20-30 years, move to distillery, grind the corn, wet the corn and cook on low, boil at 171 degrees F, ethanol..easy. Not! Cheap? Not! Subsidized by taxes thru government, you bet your sweet raspberries! Denatured then coat with light oil, seal up. Gas tank sealers of old fail as "Top Tier" gasoline become normal additive to keep injectors clean, otherwise misfire, overheats the catalytic converter(s) and they run about $8.50 - $13 bucks...for the box they come in! Freight, welded SS shell, 300 series stainless for heat and $600+ later, you have 3 noble metals washed under heat & pressure to hold oxygen. That's all they do. The heat + oxygen cause gases to change molecules into h2o, co into co2, hc are burnt, NoX stays NoX. EGR or late intake valve closing and fuel mapping to keep temps down make it simple and easy + cheap! God Bless America and the CARB & EPA & DOT that run her! Thank you smart asssphaults! I got my tank pretty clean with vinegar then flushed it with diesel and emptied it out. It sat for a few weeks and now it's rusted even more. May wash out with soapy water now then use muratic acid and then flush out with soapy water again and then use acetone rather then the denatured alcohol. Then let dry with a hair dryer flowing through it. Going to seal the tank with Red Kote. I hope this works. No replacement tanks that I can find and the dealers want $3400 plus tax for a new one. Honda vtx1800F Your opinion of this process I will be doing

I've started using 2 stroke engine oil on the inside of my tanks that I have cleaned. It keeps them from rusting if they are going to be sitting for a while before I seal them. And I use Caswell Tank Sealer, here's the video I did using this product. Works much better than Red-Kote. Hey, thanks for watching my channel and commenting! Please, keep coming back.

Any experience with kreem tank liner?
@CycleFab
@CycleFab 3 жыл бұрын
I have never used it, but I have cut tanks open that had it applied to them and from what I saw that product seemed to work just fine. The problem with some tank liners failing has to do with "tank prep" and not following the manufacturer's directions. If you try to line a tank with heavy rust in it you will have a failure eventually. I prefer Caswell tank liner because it's an Epoxy and resistant to everything but Methylene Chloride (Old School Paint Remover).
