I used this on my tank but removed the gas cap and put a expanding plug in the hole , used an old peacock with a old inner tube cut gasket worked great , rinsed well and compressed air black tank was also in the sun so it was actually hot dried well .

I usually avoid HCL acid unless the tank is absolutely horrible, but it is by far the quickest option.KLEAN STRIP Muriatic acid is created with 90 percent less VOC. Muriatic acid is damn near the same thing as hydrochloric except muriatic acid is diluted and has impurities versus hyrldrochloric acid. Vinegar is an affordable option though it takes longer. Phosphoric acid (rust converter) is probably by far the best way to go for this because you dont need to nutralize it. It will continue to phosphate the surface preventing further corosion if you dont nuetralize it. The gas tank cleaner kits use phosphoric acid. The craziest thing I have used so far is Blasters Metal Rescue. You can touch it with your hands and it wont do anything. It is reusable up to a certain point. Each gallon becomes ineffective after it kills about a 1/2 pound of rust. It is also highly effective. The results will shock you if you have ever used any of these other methods. I am not sure of the ingredients but the stuff is incredible. Remember though..if you diluted any acid with water to vat a tank...always ADD ACID TO WATER. when using muriatic acid or hcl allow for venting or expansion by letting it breathe. You can plug the petcock hole with an expansion valve or wine bottle cork. Gloves, goggles, masks and ventilation are necessary. I hate using all of them but will do so when it comes to at least muriatic/HCL. (Only cuz I learned the lesson the hard way 😮)

How bad do they have to be before you would go with Red-Kote, Kreem or other such liner?

What’s the purpose of the 2 stroke fuel? To coat it so that it does flash rust or rust in general? I need to clean a fuel tank but only has a handful of small quarter size rust spots here and there. Guessing I don’t have to use as much acid or fluids? Thanks

Just use metal rescue. You don’t need neurotic acid ruining things. Metal rescue will do it by itself and it doesn’t harm paint rubber, etc..
