In this video I demonstrate how to remove a harmonic damper/balancer from a ford 289 installed in my 65 Mustang. While working on another project on this car I found the rubber isolation ring in the damper was cracked and dry rotted. Dry rotted or damaged isolation ring will result in engine vibration. The outer ring of the damper can also slip and throw off the timing marks by several degrees.
I shot video comparing the new and old balancer and installing the new one but my memory card filled up and I didn't realize it until i had the car back together. Oh well....
If you watch closely in the video (beginning 04:26) you will see a groove worn into the shaft of the damper. Te groove is from the lip seal in the timing cover and will result in an engine oil leak. This is common on an engine with some mileage on it. Repair sleeves for the damper are available and cheap. If your aren't replacing the damper you should inspect for a groove and sleeve it if needed.
