Ever wonder how to remove soda ash from your cold process soaps? It's easy! A cheap little steamer is all it takes to remove even the most stubborn soda ash. If you don't have a steamer, you could use the steam function on an iron, or you could even rinse the top of your soaps by running it under hot water! With the steam method, you might need to steam the soap several times to fully get rid of the soda ash. However, if the soda ash is light, a light steaming is all it takes! And it leaves a beautiful shine in the process!
If you are consistently having problems with soda ash, you might want to consider reducing the amount of water in your recipe. In my experience, water is the main culprit for soda ash and I really start noticing a big reduction when using a 36% or higher lye solution. Another way to help reduce soda ash is to cover your soaps and prevent air from getting to it. Additionally, when you are blending your soap, blending to a thicker trace can help reduce your soda ash as well. Hope this helps!!!

I'm a newby down in Eugene about to make my first batch. Heading dollar tree now for a whisk and a couple containers. Will pour, tonight. Decided to whisk my first batch because I'm really excited about this and I want to get the full experience. Thank you for your instruction. This water mist hack is great. Most soap makers seem to just be ok with the ash. I will not settle for ash! Thank you.

New to soap making myself, thought I ruined a batch but it was just soda ash because I'm doing it in a cold room and removed it from the molds early while it was still raw because it was solid enough to unmold and I wanted to get it out of the way. Now I'm gonna get me a steamer because the soda ash just looks like poopoo to me too. I hand stirred ONE batch and then just moved to my stick blender. Being done in a minute rather than half an hour and all that. LOL

How long into the curing process do you steam the ash? Do you wait until it’s fully cured to steam it? Or can you steam it sooner?

What is soda ash?

It’s basically like a white ash that forms on soap when it’s saponifying. The interaction between lye and the air.
