Thanks for your outstanding demonstration. Has convinced me to put a spare donut or even full spare behind the seats somewhere. That setup is madness!

If you carry a tire inside can, it would be a very good idea to somehow tie it down securely. Otherwise in the case of a fast stop or accident, that spare will fly and hit whoever is in the van. Could be very dangerous or worst! Stay safe.

I’ve never needed to access my spare tire. And I DO have AAA. That said, I almost bought a Mitsubishi Outlander in 2020 and backed out because there is no spare. Just a can of fix-a-flat! The stow-and-go seats are priceless!

Thank you, Uncle Mark! I just had a flat after dropping my kid off at the airport in a faraway city. I was using the Geico app for roadside assistance and when it came to the question, "Do you have a working spare?" and I tried to locate it in our 2006 Dodge Caravan, I was stumped! So I turned to KZfaq University, and yours was by far the best video I found. I followed along with you, didn't scratch my radio, and freed my spare from its mysterious stowage. You saved my day, thank you so much!!

Well I have say, loved the show. My wife talked (forced) me into buying a 2013 T&C. It was used which means usually they don't come with owners manual, jack, and floor mats. My requirements were they had to give me these things. Second requirement, where's the spare. I'm paying for road side assistance now. I'm still working on inventing a luggage rack spare tire holder. This is probably one of those things every auto engineer should be forced to do, change a spare in the mud on the side of an interstate. It's worse than pulling a spare from underneath a truck, BTW, just subscribed

Gonna see as mine just looks back also, it's supposed to auto adjust for idiots who follow with their brights on. I've tried also and have seen no change. We did have to do something for more space due to my wife's medical issues and I love the show and go but don't like the little things like the overhead console coming loose and the rear liftgate opening when parked and locked. Told my wife it's the ghost of the previous owner getting out when we go to bed.

Never had to use the spare tire, but after changing my oil on a 2013, I figured I should make sure the spare was still good. Could not figure out how to release the tire from the housing because my tabs that band in were so rusted. The User Guide for the car didn't indicate that there were tabs either. Some PB blaster and a hammer fixed it. Thanks!!

Thank you for demonstrating where it is and what a pain it is to get at even under good conditions. Now, I don't think I will ever leave home without it (the regular size spare).

I agree M Burdo! Carry a full size spare carefully somehow. Would recommend having it tied down in back in case of a collision. Otherwise it could shoot to front of van & injure or kill passengers. We just cam back from a 470 mile trip and took a real spare.

Holy moly, thank goodness I stumbled upon your video. Just picked up a 14 T&C, 50k miles and love it. Planning on a 2k+ mile trip next month, essentially the eastern seaboard from Boston to Miami and back. I've owned nothing but pickups and this is probably the most inconvenient process I've ever seen, and you're on a hard and level surface! I wouldn't want to attempt this on a Florida country roadside in soft uneven sand, with fire ants biting me (ask me how I know) You've earned a new subscriber because this is an honest realistic look at what engineers theorize vs real life scenarios. Well done.

I've owned several Caravans.First thing I do is put my floor jack and 4 way lug wrench in the back.With the 3" ground clearance on my 2005 Grand Caravan with 'stow-n-go' seats it takes both jacks to get the spare from under the frame.My older Caravans I could snatch all the rear seats out in 5 minutes and haul full 4x8 sheets of material.If you've got kids you have to unload the kid seats anyway so hidden seats are no big advantage plus they caused the spare tire storage problem.
@unclemarksdiyauto

So true Donnie about the seats not that hard to remove in old van. Guess people want more convenience. Had a couple older ones as well. The only problem is if you get somewhere and need the seats back in! LOL! We usually carry a full sized spare on long trips but have not figured out a safe way to tie it down in case of a crash! Sometimes a have even brought a floor jack, but even a bottle jack and some blocks could do.

I'm around your age so grew up with sears may pop tires and changed plenty over the years, I simply did not want to read the manual, as I had to do when I got a flat in my Tundra, how to get my spare tire out. I actually like tires under like this, Dad had built a retention system similar to this for our PowerWagons, however he just used long bolts and a plate and needed to use a wrench, this is much easier and simply requires some knowledge on how to get get it out, bonus you don't get dirt in your face while taking it out like we did. Those of you who grew up in that era remember how often we had to change tires. Anyhow I appreciate the video but working on cars comes with scratches bumps and bruises, I cannot believe you showed that lol. One tip for people, please carry traffic triangles, maybe a high viz vest, and some gloves to aid in your tire change or whatever. I also carry a two strap, spare water, plastic tire chalks, space blankets, tire pump, tire plugs & handheld CB radio Firearm is optional. Please, whatever you do, get to a safe place to change your tire, if on your drivers side do NOT change in traffic, if you ruin your rim getting to safety then so be it. Find a good pull out or pull far enough off to allow a buffer.

gives new meaning to a "fifth wheel". last time I had to change a flat was on the DC beltway, Friday after work, 95 degrees, wearing a suit. I stripped down to my t shirt. Luckily the spare was in the trunk (where it is supposed to be), it was not raining, I did have an old blanket to put on the ground, and I had a 4 way lug wrench. the first thing I make sure I have is a 4 way lug wrench because the lug wrenches that come with cars are junk. I always carry a blanket, piece of plywood to have a firm surface for the jack, my AAA card paid up, and my cell phone. AAA is the way to go but plan on sitting for an hour or longer.
@unclemarksdiyauto
@unclemarksdiyauto 2 жыл бұрын
Ted, your blanket idea is probably the best idea I have heard! The last 4 way lug wrench I bought, I bent on whatever newly purchased used vehicle I was using it on. I took it back, got a refund and quickly purchased a strong and long breaker bar & socket. Here in Manitoba, most places north a couple hours of Winnipeg have poor or very spotty cel service. Most AAA tow trucks come from 2 hours away, so we could wait a while if they are busy! Stay safe, thanks for your comments and great suggestions!

Usually the area under the back cargo area is where the spare goes, however - the spare is where it is because of the Stow and GO seats take up that space when they are stowed. I will take the slight inconvenience of the location of the spare for the INCREDIBLE convenience of the stow and go seat any day (those of you who remember REMOVING entire bench seats from vans years ago will likely agree!)

Almost better off calling for a tow or something it takes so long to do this. and its so dirty and the van is so low to the ground it can get dangerous. I got a flat on the way to a job and I wasnt able to find the spare due to frustration and never thinking to check the middle or front of the vehical. This is the first vehical ive had that didnt have the spare at the back. Andwho for me it didnt matter because the area where I got a flat at off the side of the highway, the shoulder was so soft and the car was so close to the ground I would have never been able to get that spare out from under there.

That's how you do in on a Dodge Grand Caravan, except when the cranking system doesn't work right, takes immense strength to turn, the metal socket of the supplied tool actual warps from the strain, rendering it useless. Manual says some 33 clicks, to lower. Hahaha. Then I resort to using the lug wrench, still great strength required. Spare tire barely loose, just enough to fool me into thinking it's possible the thing will still lower but not enough to free. Not enough to cut the cable with a bolt cutter, which is a permanent solution, but at this point I'd never put the spare back under there. I'd never get another Dodge. I mean, 1 of 3 automatic doors work right. One not at all. The back Hatch has to be grabbed and forced up or it immediately re-lowers.
