How to remove torque converter bolts from Chevy and works on all other vehicle makes

Works on domestic and import vehicles (most im sure).
I accidentally ended the video before i was able to finish but the pry bar is basically used to hold the engine/flexplate/torque converter from moving so loosening the bolts are much easier. Then impact away after breaking the bolt loose (a more powerful impact will remove the bolts with no help needed by holding the engine)

This is really an earth shattering development of pure genius. All auto mechanics need to see this video to revolutionize automatic transmission maintenance. I've never seen a better recommendation, video or otherwise, on torque converter removal. And people who know me know that I won't bs you!

Don't use a swivel if you don't have too let the flex plate spin till the socket stops on block the the socket will hold the flywheel and allow you to get bolt broken free without holding the flexplate with a pry bar just Lil advice

You can also rotate by the crank bolt at front of engine. If that’s easier in your specific situation. Impact is a life saver in this situation if you’re solo.

Absolutely the crank bolt would work. If the crank is accessible then use that, clockwise only if preferred.

What if the engine is seized?? How would I get to those bolts to remove the engine.

@@Chinga_tu_madreI've recently taken my engine and transmission out together and it was a lot easier than just taking the engine out . Although , in your case , if you're replacing the engine you'll need to get another flex plate and torque converter .

I used that same technique tightening a harmonic balancer but now I have the engine separated from the transmission and had a 1/4 impact gun to break them loose but they didn't break loose so was wondering if maybe I should go up in size in a cordless impact gun or are the bolts left-hand threaded ? I had thought about some how using a cargo strap wrapped around the torque converter then securing a pipe to it ( for a makeshift strap wrench ) but I can't see that working .

Is this required for all automatic transmissions if you want to separate the engine from transmission? Am having trouble prying engine from transmission even though all bolts are off

Yes. If you want the torque converter to come out with the trans then you will need the convertor bolts out. Make sure all the transmission to engine bolts are out, I've had 1 I thought had all out but still had 1 bolt hiding really good. If you do have them all, they're probably stuck together and need a good pry carefully

No, you can separate the transmission from the engine, leaving the converter attached to the engine. I did mine tonight. Make sure there isn’t anything else that’s attached to the tranny that might be snagging too. Speedo, etc. I’m sure you got it out in less than the 5 months since your post. Hahaha The pry bar worked great, nice simple tip, man.

@@leebdj1949 that does not sound possibl because there is no room to pull out transmissions it will run into the chassis I can only see the engine or transmissions going in or out through up or down not sideways but hey you did it so lol

It’s best if it were a two man jog, one man holding the cram shaft and the other man loosening the flywheel.

Does it matter which way you turn flywheel some people tell me not to go in reverse on my Ls motor….is that true?

From what o have heard. Yes. Technically yes, you should only go clockwise (looking forward). But i don't believe it will hurt a lot. People will say yes either way is ok. Some will say only 1 way.

The reason it is important to rotate the crank in a clockwise position is because your crankshaft is tied to all your internal timing and valves...by rotating the engine backwards it is a very good chance you could loosen the tension on the timing chain causing it to jump a tooth messing up the timing. Depending on whether your motor is an interference engine or not this could damage and bend valves and cause a lot of internal damage.

What can you do if the bolt gets stuck in between turns ???

The torque convertor bolt? You can't get it to loosen off or has it fallen between the transmission and convertor? If loosening then try a bigger wrench or ratchet. If the bolt fell and is stuck then try getting it with a magnet or a long hook tool? If it is the last bolt and it's removed then carry on the removal and it should fall out

@@keefershere thanks for replying.. it has fallen between the transmission and converter ..I put a trans in did the job myself and now this happens… hope the magnet works thanks for the info …hate to have to pull the trans back out ..

When you spin the flywheel do you have to put the car in drive

Neutral works the best. But drive would work. As long as it's not in park. Park wouldn't allow the torque converter to turn over easy

@@keefershere Park has nothing to do with turning the engine over. Park only locks the output of the transmission. And by the way you are turning that engine backwards and that is not wise. If you can't give good advice please don't give advice at all.

the best way to turn the crankshaft is by using a socket or a wrench on the center bolt of the crankshaft pulley. Most engines turn in a clockwise rotation
