Welcome to the first video in the series of building my dream smoker!
In this video I'm showing you how to remove the valves from your propane tank.
Seems simple enough right?
Well, not always!
I'm also going to cut the tanks and explain the layout of my new smoker!

I just had one of these tanks but I used it for fireboxes. That thing was pretty long too.

awesome! I just saw you guys are located in Rolla, I went to college out there, no wonder I don't notice an accent! will you by chance go over any design concepts on firebox opening sizing or vent stack heights? I've always been curious on how the dimensions get decided.

Just a little trick titan the valve a tad just to break it loose and then then crank it off 👍👍✌️

Do you not have to fill it with water first? I have a 250 gallon and not had the courage to cut on it lol

I think he purged with an inert gas. Not sure what he used, but the gold standard I think is to fill with water/detergent and then dump it and purge.

On this video I started to purge with CO2 and I wanted to demonstrate how to use the combustible gas meter from Forensics Detectors that I use all the time. However, this is an end fill type tank and I couldn't get to safe levels. The tank is VERY old and turns out had a lot of mercaptan in it. I wound up purging the tank with water days later after trying to purge with CO2 several times. I have several other videos on the channel that show how to purge with water and this is the most common method. CO2 video coming in the future though!

@@SmokerBuilder I have a 250Gal tank and have not been brave enough to cut into it. I have had it for oh about 8 years now. When I bought it, the valves were already removed, and open to the atmosphere. I can't decide if I want to use CO2 or water. My biggest question is if you fill it with water and soap should I use a torch or grinder?

@@TheSlatonTeam did you ever end up cutting it open I picked up a 300 gal and I’m scared to cut it open definitely going to do it with water soap

Hi@@BigcbbqThanks for checking in with me. I have not.... My real estate business has really picked up quite a bit. Even with the interest rates going up. I have been able to show my clients here in Texas that a few months ago they were having to pay $60K $80K over asking just to have an offer accepted. Now my clients are having offers accepted at list price and in some cases, they are getting seller concessions that allow them to buy down the interest rates for a few years. Any way I digress I have not had time to work on my project. I am going to use a torch rather than a grinder. In my early working career, I worked as a welder. Building heat exchangers and other heavy equipment. Several times a year I would hear of people getting injured or killed by girder wheels coming apart. I would rather fill it with soapy water and cut it with a gas or plasma torch. If I can have less gas vapors to ignite, I am good with that. wet griding wheels just gives me goose bumps!
