Scared of draining down the heating system? Fear of airlocks. There is often not enough pipework to use a freezer kit, so if you are not faint hearted and feel confident, watch on.
Buy a decent Drayton valve here. amzn.to/3hY4s43

Having decorated the room and removed and painted the radiator, I reconnected the radiator and when turning the rad valve back on the top of the brass valve snapped off. So new rad valve required. Having seen how the water splashed up the wall in you video I hung polythine sheeting up on the wall, loads of old towls around the pipe and then followed your instructions. Success, no dirty water over wall or floor and a new trv fitted to rad as an upgrade. Thank you Dereton33.

Thanks Al you just saved us £250 and it was great to have a go and an amazing feeling when it worked. Thank you so much!! for making this. With everything going up in price at the moment, this was such a relief not to have to fork out to have replaced for a small chrome bathroom radiator in the downstairs loo. Thank you for warning about all the moments when the heart beats a little quicker. I stayed calm even when the nut didn’t initially grip and then all went to plan. 👨‍🔧👍

Like these videos, good to brush up and see how other people do things. For people thinking of quick changes, be careful, drain off excess pressure first via bleed valve. Also I would never do this unless the floor does NOT have carpets. I.e. kitchen or bathroom.

Hi Al. I have some of those rad vavles that have a drain off spout which also have like a 'lock nut'' and square spigot on the end to open the drain. Im not certain of the correct procedure to open and close these correctly. Are you supposed to wind back the lock nut then turn the spigot to open the drain then the reverse to close? I noticed a little leakage when I did drain off some water even though both the lock nut and spigot seemed to be tight. Could you do a vid on these valves, please?

I'm not a plumber and might be wrong, but judging from the colour of the water on the wall Wouldn't be better to drain the system and put an inhibitor into that system? As I've said I am not plumber (work in welding btw) and need to put a new radiator on the wall, this is why I watch a lot of that stuff recently. Have a few questions as well. 1.What is better to use ptfe tape or jointing compound for (new) olives, inserts. 2. Do I need turn my boiler off when draining the system. (Have to drain the system because radiator pipes don't have l/s and trv on just end cups. If you find a minute to answer these questions I would well appreciate it. Thanks
@dereton33
@dereton33 2 жыл бұрын
That demo was just to show you how to do it. the system got flushed shortly after to show another video. 1 Olives jointing compound and inserts nothing. 2 Best to turn the boiler off before any plumbing work is carried out on the system.

I have a towel radiator and the valves are at the bottom but on one side (where you balance it) its rusty just above and the white paint is flaking off. I loosened the 2 thread's enough to put some PTFE tape on and it seems to have stopped the leak. Shall I just sand the rust off and paint it, or change everything?
@dereton33
@dereton33 2 жыл бұрын
Try sanding the rust off first.
@colwilpro
@colwilpro 2 жыл бұрын
@@dereton33 OK thanks. The PTFE didn't stop the leak so I changed the left fitting. It doesn't match (it's chrome), but it's not leaking now. I'll sand and paint the rust. Strange how it went like that so quickly...about 2 or 3 years. I put PTFE on both threads, to be sure! I'll check the balancing soon. But it's getting hot now. I'm a handyman but try to avoid plumbing as water is dangerous in the wrong places. This is my own property. I'm in Wandsworth London.

@dereton33
@dereton33 Жыл бұрын
There will always be a bit in the pipework. Anyway you should only do this as a quick swop as shown. I meant as no need to drain off in that you do not have a roof tank to drain.

If this was a open vent system wouldn't it be easier to bung the two pipes in the f&e tank, depressurise the radiator in question and as such vastly reduce any pressure/flow in that section of the CH system before changing the valves?

You can do that, but this saves a trip up into the loft and the hassle of blocking up the cold feed and vent.

Someone told me that on an f&e system you can plug the feed and expansion pipes with bungs and this air locks the system so you won't get much leakage. Not tried it myself though. It seems like if you are ok with getting into the loft then draining down is not much harder.
