Changing out the entire attic stair unit can be potentially very difficult to do for homeowners. Often times the unit can be repaired rather than replaced. Over years of wear attic stair ladders can break. This video show how to repair the stair that has broken.

I wood glued 3/4-inch ply to the outside after drilling holes where the wires go through.. thought it might be stronger. But I like the 2x4 cut in half idea, you've done here, for more damaged legs.

If the plywood is glued to the outside it will interfere with the operation of the stairs

Nice work! Came across an older house where the attic ladder has no step support rod or truss rod beneath each step. Had trouble finding any. Thinking of using 1/4-20 all thread. Would appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

You most likely will not be able to get a replacement. Just make your own from a 1x4

Do you know where I might be able to purchase the rod(s) and the square nails? I can't seem to find them anywhere. Maybe they aren't sold separately, which is why you stated to keep them?
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 4 жыл бұрын
You could use all thread rods and the square nails are available at many local hardware stores. The big box stores do not carry them. Thank you very much.

Can anyone tell me what brand of stairs these are and if they were manufactured before 2010, or 2010 or after? I need to order replacement hinges for my attic stairs and they look exactly like these.

@@99Romans58 @Paw Paw’s WorkShop Mine looks exactly the same too. I found a manufacturer's stamp on mine. It reads: "LOK/TREAD EXCEL. MFGD. ONLY BY MFS. MEMPHIS, TENN 38112" I did some searching, and that seems to refer to the Memphis Folding Stair company, the Excel model of ladder. I think they went out of business, however. I need to replace one or more of the treads. I saw the suggestion to just use 1x4's. Is pine the best choice or should I use some harder wood? Do you think the grooved surface on the top is important? I know it is for the non-slip feature, but wouldn't that just weaken the tread? I was thinking of applying some of that peel and stick non-slip stuff.
