How to repair a FT 991A with no receive on the first receive!

The receive on my FT 991A wasn't working until you selected the pre-amps. Follow along as I try to repair what I think is wrong.Hopefully I can repair it.

I remember well the first time I opened my 7100 and soldered on it. Modern component sizes are very challenging. Well done Chuck!

Tip- Use KAPTON tape to hold (most) smd's in place during soldering. (use a small exacto knife to cut the Kapton in small strips).. 73 , N6SPP

Surface mount soldering is tough to do and very good soldering equipment helps. On thing I do is clean my tip well then put a blob of solver on it. Hold the part down and touch the blob of solder. Then its held in place to get the other side on. Nice job fixing the 991

I remember my first attempt with smd components. I was attempting a MARS mod on an HT . Got a component next to the one I was removing a little too warm and it dislodged and fell onto the carpeted floor. By chance, I did manage to find it and was able to remount it on the board without a microscope. Yes, I was pretty nervous during the process. Definitely not something for the faint of heart. Solid video and a great job. 👍

@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures I had to raise the Audio up to hear you then the background music wiped your audio. I have a 991A but did not have the $$ for a 705 even though I wanted one. I got a G90 and an FT-981, I got them 3 yrs ago but have not even taken them out of the boxes. I have been waiting for some of my friends to help me put up my Antenna. when I moved to Oregon in June of 2020. I asked my club several times but it has fell on deaf ears. I talked to the president of the club who lives around the corner in the same park. I hope I can get my BB7V & my 80m/40m dipole made by Budd W3FF (he created the buddipole and was a friend, he helped me put up my Antenna at my old QTH in Dunsmuir, CA.

Same thing happened to my FT-891 when it came to how I learned my Receive was wrong. . It was the Beacons that alerted me to the decreased Receive sensitivity.

I think the audio sounds better on the Yaesu 991a sounds better than the Icom. I'm not prejudiced in any way 'cause I've got a 991a. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

Nice job Chuck, I think with my age and eye sight now, I might have just soldered an ordinary small resistor in place with tweezers as it's only one resister and wouldn't take much room up. But good delicate job.

Practice makes perfect with smd. May try using a toothpick to hold down smd components down. Also, small solder wick (new) makes sopping ip solder effortless. You did good. 73

D1113 is another component that often goes bad effecting various functions. I was thinking it was people incorrectly connecting devices to the aux ports but now i'm wondering if it's due to the bad grounding where various earthing points have been varnished over stopping screws from grounding out certain boards such as the auto tuner board. perhaps the pin diodes become damaged due to bad grounds in other parts of the radio. Glad you found the bad resistor on the att / pre amp relay.

I did some research and found a couple sites that explained the problem. I posted one in the description, but I took the advice from another site and used the original part. Thanks!

I think so not sure, I do a lot of testing and use my home antenna to judge so I might have put some power into it.

@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures if another trancever is near by like a neighbor for instance keying up close to you you can pop the rf protection chip static protection my guess it happened to a fellow ham lived next to another ham his receve went out dead

As time goes on it gets harder to see and even worse keeping a steady hand, plus the parts get smaller. Or is that "just my magination" . The 991 sounds better than the Icom....JMHO... probably why I have one too.... and just got another Yaesu

Great info... I've been contemplating what to buy as my next radio after my HT and I like the 991A for having vhf/uhf. I'm curious, there are a few videos that talk about a common issue with the finals blowing, and it's related to the bias current being set too high from the factory. KZfaqr Doktor Vells posted a video on how to do the adjustment to back it down... have you done anything like that to your 991A? Got a big kick out of your T-Shirt... looks like we're both in Contra Costa Co. 73, KN6VMK
