My refrigerator caused a water leak from my kitchen down into the basement. I'm embarrassed to admit that I left the large hole in the ceiling for three years before I patched it. If you had a water leak, too, that damaged your drywall but aren't sure how to fix the drywall, this tutorial will help the everyday homeowner how to fix it themselves without paying the expensive costs for a handy-person or contractor! My ceiling is a textured ceiling, so my repair is specific to that type of ceiling, but these instructions can be used for smooth or textured ceilings.
Read this blog post on how to fix big holes in the wall for a list of materials you'll need to patch your own large drywall holes in the ceilings or walls:

Love that you do this! More women need to know how to take care of things like this at home. Why pay someone a bunch of money for something simple and cheap to do yourself. I grew up around construction. My dad and maternal grandfather were contractors. Uncles, cousins, brothers....it's quite literally in our blood I believe. Lol. Though I am the only female that is crazy enough to do it. But, I grew up working with dad and my older brothers building stuff. Running heavy equipment and a dump truck, before I could legally drive a car on the road. I loved it!!! Tried to look at other careers...and nothing made me happy. I finally gave in and went with my heart. Working my way up from laborer, apprentice and ended up in civil engineering. Nearly 30 yrs of it and now retired a d wishing I was still out there on a site playing with the guys in the mud. Lol 🤣🤷‍♀️ I'm weird

I had a hole in my kitchen ceiling. I repaired the hole, but I have a particular pattern to my textured ceiling. It reminds me of sunflowers. They must have used some kind of stippling brush made just for that. So, I have yet to repair the texture. I hate tape! IMO it never looks right, especially on a wall/ceiling without texture. What I do is cut the gypsum to the dimensions of the hole and leave about an inch of the paper around the outside. Put mud around the outside of the hole for the paper to stick to and it makes a seamless patch. It's like a drywall "plug". lol
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, you are absolutely right! That is a great option, too. I will be doing another video in the near future using that method, too, so that people know they have option. Yes, tape can suck! I do like how the paper joint tape looks but it requires using the mud to adhere it and that's a paint, but pretty seamless at the joints, too. Thanks for watching!

@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 4 жыл бұрын
Holes that are smaller, you've got a couple options. You could use a patch kit (I have a video on it), but patch kits usually don't blend in perfectly well. You could also cut a small piece of drywall that is square-ish, like in this video, but place it in there, leaving the edges of the paper as a patch. I'll do another video for smaller holes because I do have a small hole that needs filled!

I wasn't very handy either until we bought a house, and I had to learn. Now only a few months later I can do all kinds of things that last year I hadn't the slightest clue about and really aren't nearly as hard to do as I once thought. You aren't born handy, you learn by doing.
