Here's a video on how I did a quick repair job on our asphalt shingle roof.
I used roofing mesh and plastic roofing cement.

I followed all the steps within this video and fixed 4 patches and my roof leak(s) are 100% covered and complete. I saved myself $895 in roof repair costs. I used Henry’s roof fabrics and Henry’s extreme roof patch; purchased a small trowel to spread the roof cement properly, through and through. In my opinion, a great video for those wanting to save money in expensive roof repair costs. Total cost of material was $69.45. Beat that! Thank you for the video!

Why do I need fabrick? I have yo go back to the store...what if the playwood underneath the shingle is wet and rotten?
@joeygunzilla6878
@joeygunzilla6878 2 жыл бұрын
@@angetodac I did it without fabric and it only lasted a year before leaking again. I assume the snow gathering on the roof in winter and the sun in the summer moved the tar stuff. I redid it with the fabric now. The fabric is what holds the tar stuff and keeps it from moving. The tar stuff only has to move so slightly in order for water to get back in. And as for moldy rotten wood.. This stuff works over wet areas but if you have the skill you should cut away the rotten section and replace the wood. This stuff will stop your leak but the mold you have growing likely isn't going to stop spreading. This stuff isn't going to restore your wood in anyway. It will however, stop your leak from continuing.

Some here are saying how this is a not a good fix......its meant to be temporary...and for some folks they may not have the money to do more. Its a good quick fix when your strapped for cash & cant afford a roofer to come fix your stuff folks. Some of you people have to put yourselves in the shoes of those who are on a tight budget.

It is obvious this video was meant to show a quick & easy temporary patch/repair. It was not suggested to be used for a skylight or for a complete roof patch so lets keep it simple people. If you have a better idea for a temporary patch/repair please post it rather than going negative on someone that put something out there that could help the budget minded or someone that can't afford the time or money to do a complete reroof at the time they have a leak.

When it’s cold (35 degrees) the cement is very hard to apply to the roof with a trowel. I couldn’t get it to adhere to the roof well until I worked it in with my hands. I made sure to warm up the cement before working with it, but I still had a hard time with the trowel. As for the gloves, make sure you use disposable/cheap ones that you can throw away afterward. I use a old pair of brown cottons. If you can pick a warm day then use a trowel otherwise I recommend using a old pair of gloves.

There are 2 ways to find a leak, 1 is to use a garden hose and have someone inside to let you know when the leak is located. The 2nd way and the best, is to get into the "attic" and look for water stains. I hope this helps (etheromlet) who asked this question.

Well - I got up on the roof and did the repair. Hopefully I got the spot. It's supposed to rain Tuesday so I will stay home from work and go in the attic to see if any water is coming in and if so - then I can pinpoint the problem area for the repair. I can't depend on the roofer to show up when I want him to. I hope this repair will last long enough for the roofers to come over to do the whole roof replacement.

I recently had a leak in my game room. I went on the roof and noticed a couple shingles weren't sticking. Bought some roof cement caulking gun style. Lifted the shingles to put some cement, and noticed the previous idiots used SCREWS for some of the shingles. Now when the wood expands in the summer, it can't flex. It left these weird divots where the screws are so I filled them with cement. Check under your shingles boys, idiots probably did the job. And I don't even do construction and I know this. I'm a suit and salesmen kind of guy....

This video is 10 years old and possible the OP does not see comments anymore. But, just in case... Could you do this same repair on the plywood deck if you were to remove the proper shingles? I have a small leak.. I can see that if two shingles above as well as the ones over the leak could be pulled up and then put back down... ..so the repair could be hidden without much trouble. I'd like to know if this fabric and cement work on the plywood roof deck, under the shingles? Thank you!

***** Hate to break it to you Mr. Professional Roofer, but the moment you referred to that roof as a "steep slope roof" was the moment I stopped reading anything you had to say. That roof is clearly either a conventional slope or at the most a higher slope. Had it been a steep slope, all of his supplies would have been in the street. What's sad is how you took it upon yourself to criticize someone's youtube video to show how smart you are when in fact you don't even know the terminiology of your profession. And FYI, i'm not a roofer. just a diy guy.

Chutes and Ladders Roofing, I am the superintendent of a roofing repair company in Florida with 30+ years experience and I agree with everything you have said.This homeowner special is nothing more than a water trap which will create wood rot. Roofing is one thing that the unskilled should ever challenge the skilled on.
@kevinwaller6353
@kevinwaller6353 7 жыл бұрын
No I don't suggest you just let it leak, that would be absurd. I do roof repairs everyday so I don't need to be informed that some people can only do some sort of repair. What I suggest as I have said in other comments on this thread is to not attempt repairs where actual roofers are saying in the comment section that it is the wrong thing to do. This will only lead to more damage and more costs to the homeowner costing thousands. This is what I do for a living and have for a very long time. This definitely is leading people in the wrong direction. It's kind of insane I'm giving good sound advice against someone who is giving really bad advice and people want to side with the guy who is not a roofer and is misleading ya'll but hey it's stuff just like this that keeps me employed.
@kevinwaller6353

Using cement and membrane (materials used in video) is a very common way to repair a roof and is a must in certain instances. However not on a shingle roof. You have to first determine what is actually leaking on your roof, such as flashings, valleys, lifted nails, etc. and usually you can repair a shingle roof with a few tubes of roofing cement and a caulking gun. A good majority of shingle roof leaks are a nail issue. I can usually visually spot a shingle roof problem by locating the roof area over the leak. Usually noted by a deflection or abnormality in the decking. If there are no obvious penetrations in the leak area then I would use a flat bar and lift the shingle tabs in a large area over the leak, then use your caulking gun to cement every nail head (don't do a solid bead, just a dab over the nail head) and every shingle joint, making sure to reach the top of shingle joint. When you're done then walk over area to press together to ensure it will seal (careful, it's messy). I hope this helps.

Its important to note that this would never pass a code or home inspection. Temporary fix maybe. A year at best. Might get two summers out of it or one winter. There is no substitute for new shingles. Better yet, take some older shingles from the drip edge and replace the cracked ones. Put new shingles at the edge on the rear of the house.

It may take a few times til you get the right spot. But when you do I would sat 4 to 5 years. I have to coat my roof once every 4-5 years with the Henry on a mobile home.,so I would go by that rule. I am no roof guy so I could be wrong. I do know winter is a bitch because snow melts and get into cracks then when it freezes it expands and makes new leaks.

How do you repair flat roofs that have standing water on it therefore leaking!!!! Is there a video that shows a way to deal with this problem in a simple and understanding way? Most videos seen address the leak but not the ponding, that is just like putting make up over a scar and making it look good, but the problem is still there (the standing water).

@patricksimmons395
@patricksimmons395 8 жыл бұрын
+Montery12 No I understood fine. You have a flat roof. The roof has a low spot collecting water. The standing water is leaking through. Remove water from low spot and repair. I'm sure there is more than one way to repair this low spot.
@Montery12
@Montery12 8 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Simmons As you probably know; pondings could be long standing issues that might not be resolved by doing troubled spots one at time; but by properly reconstructing the cement paper laid down again to get rid of down spots once and for all; you could get rid of ponding. The relaid will now include good down pitches and drains. I would look at the home's roof engineering before relaying down new paper.

Can someone walk around up on the roof? Check for soft spots or spots where shingles may be missing or damaged from the wind. Wind can tear shingles right off the roof. I'd start with the type of repair in this video & if you have missing or damaged shingles, buy one package and spot replace those that are missing/damaged. This should buy a little more time. Also, tell your friends to look into a refinance on their mortgage. Now is a good time to lock into a really low rate & maybe they can pull a little money out of their equity to replace the roof too. Rates are super low right now, so tell them to jump on it if they can.

Maybe this worked, but you literally could have stuck some shingles under the good parts , you wouldn't even have to stagger them because it appears the rest is staggered properly. Or you could have stuck a tarp under the good shingles.

That house is in trouble. Those vertical rips are the direct result of an un or under ventilated attic. Rip it off and do proper ventilation or this roof will look like that in short order while growing mold and mildew inside the house..

+Thao Nguyen Cheers - but £54!! There doesn't seem to be a generic name for this stuff in the UK, they are all called some mixture of the words roof repair leak sealer etc. which makes it hard to search for. I like that the US guys just call it roofing cement.

A repair is usually a temporary fix. We no longer repair with asphalt but replace the damaged area with new material.

Problem #1: Before doing a quick fix, inspect your roof from the outside and especially from inside the attic. Someone mentioned spraying water on the roof while someone else looks for dripping water inside. That's a good idea, but I would rather just wait for some rainfall. Then I don't need a second person holding the hose outside plus I'm saving water. Looking for stains is a good idea too. The easiest thing though is to got into the attic while the sun is hitting the roof, turn all the lights off, and look for any spot where the light comes through. Where ever it does, so does water. Problem #2: What the man is doing in this video is a temporary fix, not a repair. It's what you may want to do while you wait for the new shingles to be delivered. Then you are ready to repair which in this case means replacing some old shingles with new ones, an perhaps even the plywood underneath. Conclusion: Substitute "repair" with "quick temporary fix" in your title and you've got a perfect video! I see the word "quick" in the description but still, the title is too misleading.

Just a friendly reminder that the reason KZfaq eliminated the dislike button is to limit your ability to readily tell if other people also think something is a bad idea.

Too much hate on this topic. When you buy any type of SEALER, doesn't matter what brand, that simply means you're dodging the 1000% cost of a new roof. These are just the many ROOF Repair videos here in youtube. When you Repair/Seal/ETC., that simply means someone can't afford a super expensive new roof. Move on, this guy will probably get a new roof anyway.
