How to repair a tractor wheel

How to repair a steel rear tractor wheel which rusted through at the valve stem area as a result of the tire solution (calcium chloride used for weight) leaking from the inner tube. It covers using a needle gun to clean the wheel, cut out the section in need of repair, then fit up and weld in two new pieces of steel to complete the repair. Information on helping to prevent rust, using a mixture of tar and oil.

Nice job, shows, with patience any decent welder can save a tractor wheel.

Looks like a Massey Ferguson or Ford wheel. If you had a scrap wheel on hand, you could cut new parts from it to weld into the rim you are repairing. I just had to replace the power adjust rear wheels on on my Massey Ferguson 270 Diesel because the inner tubes leaked calcium chloride and slowly rusted out each wheel very badly. It was cheaper for me to source gently used rims than fix or replace with new the existing rims. My 28” wheels also have heavy cast centres.✌🏻🇨🇦

Yes you are right, but old tractor wheels are getting harder to find. It was my neighbors wheel, I believe Ford, he only had this one, and it wasn't in too bad of shape. Thanks for the comment.

Great video, Rick. I did almost the exact same repair to one of my rims a couple of years ago. The only thing I did different was I welded it MIG instead of TIG.

Great video!! I'm repairing an old tractor rim as well and was wondering the exact recipe for the rust protection. Can I just use tar or would you recommend only using the roof patch cement. I have both kerosene & diesel, would you recommend one over the other?

there shops that will have the inner part and outside rim they will welded two together. Had a skidsteer that i had all four wheels made.

Yeah if I had a large roller I could make almost anything. It would be nice! I just try to concentrate on the welding and small fabrication, I hire out items I don't have the tooling for. Thanks for the comment.

Great job! I have a similar fix to do on my Simplicity front wheel that I hope I can do with a fender washer and a hole saw, but we'll see how that works out. I love the hat! Where did you get it?

Curt not sure where I got that specific hat. Guys used used to bring them to jobsites and sell them. Now I just buy online. Thanks for the comment.
