There is an easier way to loosen the hydrant from the pipe with the wrenches. Move your lower wrench right up under the bottom of the hydrant and position the handles of both wrenches close together so that you can get both of your hands on them and squeeze. Keeping your wrenches a foot apart like that makes it a lot harder on you than necessary.

Thank you Roy from South Carolina! The handle/ hydrant part of ours split over the winter. Have an old one that should work nicely.

Thank you for your time on the how-to. First vid I've seen on a Clayton Mark spinning the head off and confirms it actually does. My Clayton Mark is on so tight, you literally can't see any threads exposed (gorilla touch), so wasn't sure if threaded or press fitted with epoxy or something! Thanks for the heat trick, which is my next attempt on mine. Few tips though if you don't mind: Loosen the packing nut completely along with the rod adjustment from handle while unthreading . You do not want the rod to spin while unscrewing the head. You'll run the risk of unscrewing the plunger off rod at bottom too, which would be all bad if that happens and then would require a dig up. Silicon grease is also recommend on new plunger when replacing. Also confirm stand pipe is draining when shut off during new adjustment. Place thumb over hose connect end and remove. You should feel/hear a vacuum, otherwise you might still be leaking by and over saturating your drain pit. ;-)

I have a hydrant that busted off right at the top. Of course, it is 18 degrees outside. Luckily, I have a second hydrant about 100 feet away. I don't have a torch and the hydrant has to be 30+ years old. It is going to be fun getting it off. Thank you for the video. Very informative and reassuring that such things can be fixed yourself.

I just posted my own problem. I have one of those little propane torches that you heat copper pipes with. It may take me a long time but I'm going to try it on my Hydrant anyway. If it works well I'll post another reply here. It's been some time since you posted so I hope you got yours fixed OK.

Very Helpful! Thank you for posting! My problem is the opposite of yours. When I tried to turn mine on it broke somewhere down in the pipe. I can see that I will have to dig mine up to do a proper repair. I built a wooden box around mine and filled it with gravel. Fortunately I put it together with screws instead of nails. Your video gives me an idea of the inner workings. I might take it apart from above just to see exactly where that long rod broke.

I just watched your video, it built my confidence. My hydrant is ProFlo and the rod with rubber stopper fits thru the hydrant head where the larger fitting is. No need to take the head off.

Mine is doing the opposite. The water trickles out. I was just going to replace the entire hydrant, I still might as parts are hard to find. Glad I found your video. Thanks a million.

OH, one other thing - - if you need water to your house and are unable get get the needed parts right away, just temporarily cap off the riser with a pipe plug after removing the head-rod-plug assembly.

Something to keep in mind with the repair, it is usually a good idea to go ahead & flush out the standpipe before you put the spout back on. I have found more than once that pieces of debris like small gravel, decayed plunger material etc work their way into the seat area, and you need to get rid of that stuff or your repair isn't going to be successful. It may have been that debris that caused you the problem in the first place.

Should have been able to take your hose bib off and plug hydrant with 3/4" pipe plug. A hose end cap (I keep a couple around here on the farm) or a hose end spray nozzle you can shut off would stop the water for a temporary fix. did they give you a new top shaft seal too?

I have Campbell E1 blue units that failed at three years--I don't recommend Campbell-- the rubber bullet becomes dislodged and stuck underground-- requiring digging--the bronze bore below is a reducer from 1" to 3/4" and is awfully tight, even with the silicon grease they recommend. designed to fail-- all these hydrants are stiff to operate and arcane in design--the only ones I see working are made in iowa--red.

Just spoke to baker in Pennsylvania--the dealer for us.. man says the monitor brand is designed better--so, why are there lines thru my text above? more censorship? all I know is I spent over 100.00 on 3 lead-free reducer brass based/valves and didn't need them--although they sent me 3 replacement pistons and seal packs to finish my other two with--the key was the silicone paste/grease upon assembly, but how long does that last? will I have to unscrew these things and lube them up every 6 months? I have an earthen pedestal design that uses the standard 4 dollar spigot with a 8" foam plug in abs pipe, using soil thermal mass the same way the 2 foot burial does--I should test one this winter- stone masonry with concrete weather cap and 8" of polyfoam plus inside. looks like an old national park drinking fountain.

Would have been great if you would have actually described or showed what you did to adjust the throw of the valve. At this point, I know to remove the head and replace the rubber... But nothing about how to adjust the valve, which (to my mind) in the crux of the issue...

Mine has a rather unique problem. The way it's supposed to work is when you turn it off, it drains the hydrant into the ground. Mine is working fine except that it also drains into the ground while the valve is open. I was afraid I was going to have to dig everything up, break the concrete around it and replace the whole hydrant. Fortunately, I was able to find a repair kit for mine, which wasn't easy. It's a generic hydrant and the only letters or numbers on it are "Made In China". Thanks for the video. It's nice to know what I'm getting into before I start.

Gun clinging is right, put your hands at the end of cheater bar to gain leverage. Better yet, let the bottom wrench press against the wall (if it is drywall or too soft use piece of wood to spread force) and pull the top one with all your weight. I bet she would have come off without the heat. Thanks for the video though, just learning how to do this in case I have to and I rely on youtubers such as yourself to give me experience.

Hi Roy, Thanks for the video. My barn hydrant is leaking, much less then yours was, but still making a mess. I don't have an acetylene torch but I do have a propane torch, so hopefully that will do the trick in loosening it. I'm sure mine will be as rusted in place as your was. I have one question tho, what was that you used instead of Teflon tape to seal it? I wanted to purchase that too when I went to find the rubber tip seal that needs replacing. Thanks again.
