These headphones work great "in theory". They're perfect for studio recording use, providing ~20db of isolation while giving decent audio. However, they are notorious for shorting out after only minimal use. This is due to poor wiring and poor connection to the driver within the left headphone cup. This video shows how to fix these headphones to eliminate the shorting, and prevent the short from returning after prolonged use.

It works! You're the man! One thing though, and I know that other people have mentioned this before, but you can open the casing just by putting your index and middle finger against the inside of the casing, and pry it out very easily without damaging the outer nylon :)

Always nice to find some video to open kinda devices without destroying it! 🙂 Unfortunatly , the one I wanted to fix is definitively out of order, the first loud speaker (left one) has the connexions of the coil broken. Too much tiny to fix and the loud speaker is pasted with glue!

This works so easily! I didn't re-solder at all just pulled up the cord a bit and attached it to the inside. It took maybe 10 minutes. Thank you!

Previously I reported having problems with the driver. Who I end up doing was placing a piece of wood between the back of the driver and the headphone outer shell. I made it long enough that when I placed the driver harness it was pressured tight like if I was squeezing it. It's been working perfectly fine now!! I also made sure I followed your suggestions to secure the cables also. Thanks again!!

Followed this video but still had issues after awhile. Found the real issue on mine. The tie wrap holding the cable inside was on too tight and causing some shorts. So I cut the tie wrap off and resoldered all the wires back. I put a new tie wrap it not overly tight. Works great thanks for the video

Wow, I thought I was the only guy on earth still using an old set of VFs. Just thought I would try YT to see if there was a vid and here it is. I would use my Sony XM1000s, but things just don't sound the same. Will try this fix.

Thanks a lot!! Super helpful video. I just fixed both pairs of those in less than half an hour w/o soldering anything, just fixed the cable position as you showed (I used a spot of hot glue though but wouldn't recommend since it can demage the cables I reckon). It worked great anyway. Greetings from Berlin.

This video was A LOT of help. Had the same problem. Definite design flaw. I found out by accident that you can remove the black oval ear pieces by putting your finger underneath / inside them and pulling outward. Thank you!!

AMAZING. This worked perfectly. Thanks for showing us how to open these (they look impregnable). BUT... I *think* it may even be possible to open these without the use of a screwdriver. If you remove the center foam, you can reach into the can and flex the edge inward enough to get it started. This may avoid what little damage the screwdriver method may cause. Anyway, I didn't need to solder at all - I just took up the cable, put a new zip cable tie to prevent slippage, and then taped the wire to the driver as you suggested (THIS IS KEY TO FIXING THE PROBLEM). Just like brand new!!!
@peganachinareviews1647

Exactly, pull the foams gently out, then you will have an free edge to grasp with your fingers. It is not easy but with some stregth the piece will pop out without any single damage. Its a joint piece, not glued at all! So *DONT* use any screwdriver. In my case, I used a hot glue pistol to keep the wire fixed inside the housing. I dont think any tape will keep the things fixed inside for a long time...

I found (after destroying the nylon) that you can grab the inside rim with your fingers and just pull out the whole plastic rim instead. Will prevent you from doing my (and yours in this video) mistake of ripping the nylon.

very nice video! This content is exactly what i am looking for ^^ However i could not repair the fluttering noise of the membrane which occure at about 1/4 of the volume. I cleaned the speaker in advance but it still vibrates at low frequences. Is there a way to fix it (only affects the right side, the left is working fine)?. Much obliged

is the design of my headphones different...??? mine look just like the ones in this video, but i canNOT get them open by any of the means listed in the comments nor by prying at the "seam" (which i couldn't really find any seam). i pulled from inside the cup with all my force, and did not feel the slightest give at all.... ???

Have a pair of CAD isolation phones with the same problem. Soldering is fine but one of the individual wires is snapped right where the cable goes into the can. I think the movement plus the tight ring they put around the cable inside the can to keep it from pulling out cause the issue. Anyway, cut 4” off the cable and reattach. A pain to strip the wires and solder but works fine now.

Hey! Thanks for the great video, it fixed my problem. I just found a way to open up the headphones without destroying the nylon or the plastic. I use a small fruit knife and I do a slice movements on the seam really gently then put the knife a bit angle to open them up.

This can be done pretty easily if you have the right tools and know how to solder. I might try this out in the future when I have time.

Hi All, You DON't have to use a screwdriver to open the casing and damage the side of your ear phones. Just shimmy a couple fingers inside the lip of the earphone and pull it apart. It has 6 clips around the edge that just snap in and out. Next, thanks for the video! I fixed one set of phones this way. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the other set I have. There is no sound at all in them. Anyone know how else to fix? Soldering on it looks perfectly fine.

Kenli Mattus I just did it! I used a screwdriver INSIDE the padding and it snapped off with no damage. So, you don't have to find a seam with a screwdriver. Just get inside the padding and snap it off using some force (a screwdriver was easier for me.) Just wanted to share!

+Nancy Medeiros I don't have strong fingernails so if you can do it, please do so. As you can see from the video, there was no damage except for very slight cosmetic imperfection. Whatever you gotta do without damaging the driver and wires, so be it. Maybe a nail file? butter knife?

+Kenli Mattus Using a tiny flat head screwdriver won't damage them. Try a butter knife or a large nail file.

To improve this headphone, cut off the main wire, install a female 1/8 " stereo plug where the wire enters the head phone. When the male plug is plugged in, white wire goes to the tip of the male plug, red wire is the middle of the male plug, and the black wire is the main ground wire( the remaining lug). Now go to radio shack and get 2 double ended 1/8 inch male plugs, and when one breaks, you can plug in the backup cable and continue with your business.

Thanks, great video. Though it seems my problem is concentrated in the driver itself, as if I squeeze it on both sides it plays the sounds. Now to remove that to inspect I have no idea. I had previously sent this headphone to Vic Firth and got a replacement just to go bad after a month. It's still in warranty but I'm not sending them again. If I can't fix these I'm looking for another brand.

Hi, actually you don' t need any tool to open the headphone cup. There is a dent inside the cup beneath the cushing. If you put your finger inside and pull firmly the shell will pull off without any damage.

Great video, but I can guarantee that you`ve fixed it by puling the cable inside. That stopped the cable from twisting. Soldering fresh the left driver is not necessary. Its the little cables inside the main cable are damaged, just below the original zip tie. In your case the inner cables are not badly damaged. In my headphones, all three were broken.

Not really. I would suggest taking out the foam piece that goes over the driver. Then tighten the headstrap as much as possible so they really clamp onto your skull. These two things will be more uncomfortable but would probably isolate a little more...
