Hey, guys! David here from First Place Auto Parts. Thanks for joining me today. In this video, we're diving into the steps involved in repairing cracked factory OE steel exhaust manifolds. If you've been following, you might recall my recent motor mount replacement on my '87 Chevrolet shop truck, which led to the discovery of a cracked exhaust manifold due to engine movement and vibration. Today, I'll walk you through the process of repairing it.
*🔧 Steps in Repairing Cracked Exhaust Manifolds:*
*1. Remove the Exhaust Manifold:*
Start by removing the exhaust manifold from your vehicle. Cracked exhaust manifolds often cause a noticeable exhaust leak, and you might experience changes in engine tone and performance. Depending on your vehicle, removing the manifold may involve taking off additional components like air compressor brackets or power steering pumps. Use jack stands and a jack if you don't have access to a lift.
*2. Prepare for Welding:*
Prepare the cracked area for welding. If you're not confident in your welding skills, consider taking it to a professional welder. Overheating the steel during welding can weaken it further. Clean the surrounding area with a right-angle grinder and a flapper disc to reduce the heat concentrated in one spot.
*3. Stitch Welding:*
Use a stitch welding process to repair the crack. This involves creating multiple small welds to minimize heat concentration and prevent further weakening of the steel. Continue this process until you have a continuous repair.
*4. Reinforce with Steel Plates:*
To reinforce the repair and prevent the crack from spreading, weld two small steel plates on either side of the exhaust manifold, directly above where the crack terminates. Ensure these plates won't interfere with the frame or engine block.
*5. Install on Vehicle:*
After completing the repairs, reinstall the exhaust manifold on your vehicle. Use new exhaust manifold gaskets to ensure a proper seal. Don't skimp on quality gaskets.
*6. Final Checks:*
I've put the repaired exhaust manifold through nearly 3,000 miles and multiple heat cycles without any further issues. Be thorough in your repair, use quality gaskets, and perform necessary checks before calling it good.
*🔗 Conclusion:*
Repairing cracked exhaust manifolds is possible if done correctly. Take your time, follow the steps, and consider professional help if welding isn't in your comfort zone. The goal is a reliable and lasting repair.
