I purchased my 2007 Honda Ranger TRX400/FGA 5 or so years ago. This has been a great ATV but the last year or so I’ve experienced some issues with the transmission in automatic mode. This ATV has two options for shifting: manual…hitting the up and down buttons to shift or the automatic option. In manual mode the transmission shifts perfectly. The issue is in the automatic mode. When you hit the throttle and you have a load (passanger , hunting stands) the bike will bog down and not take off. When you release the throttle you can hear something like a solenoid shift and reset. Sometimes you need to do these several times to get the bike to move. Once its moving the problem will not occur in the high gears only in first or a stand position. I had an angle sensor replaced several years ago with no improvement. I‘ve changed the oil annually with only factory Honda required oil and filters also no change. If any could shed some light on this I would be all ears.

Please provide more information regarding the code your display; How many blinks is there?, also does it ride completely normally in esp? Check the resistance of the angle sensor, and compare it to what the manual says, if the resistance is off you probably need another angle sensor replacement (yea I know it sounds ridiculous, but its the Achilles heel of these machines). I own a Honda Rancher TRX400/FGA aswell (mine is 06 but pretty much identical to yours) and these bikes work great you just gotta know about the hondamatic system. Mine actually has a blown angle sensor AND a damaged ECM but it still works fine, I just bypass the ecm and connected my shifting buttons to relays then directly to the shift motor, this way im stuck in manual/ESP but also I never run into hondamatic/electrical issues anymore! I have a 2019 rancher now and I was sure to get the footshift manual model so Id have the least amount of issues to deal with (footshift is mechanically/electronically much simpler than auto/hondamatic/esp) but I still love the 06 its a great water riding bike.

We have a 2004 Rancher 400, we do not have to go through the retrieval procedure to get the code. The dashes are on as soon as you turn the switch on. We have replaced the angle sensor, ECM, 2 neutral indicator switches, checked all the wiring and continuity, we cannot seem to figure out why we cannot get the N instead of the dashes, any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. Would a bad combination meter cause this? Code 12 is what it shows.

That's what was wrong with my 400 AT. I found one used on EBay for a Rubicon for like twenty bucks. Worked perfectly, I ought to sell mine now as that machine blew the lower end of the engine and I replaced the bike with a newer rancher. Great bikes but the AT ranchers are junk. I'll now stick with the 350 ranchers.

Meh I dissagree, sounds like you weren't using honda GN4 or equivalent oil. Was it API SN,SJ certified? 10w40 with NO friction modifiers? If not, thats why; hondamatic transmissions use engine oil as hydraulic fluid to more the hydraulic swashplate, in turn, moving the motor side swashplate to the desired position for a specific "gear". These bikes dont actually have gears its essentially one gear and then a bunch of oil(hydraulic fluid) putting varying pressure on the hydraulic side swashplate which then transfers that pressure to the motor side swashplate and converts the pressure into power to move the atv!

Have 03 Rubicon 500 and NOT shift out of 1st. Does the TPS switch wires point up and color of left, middle, right wires. 2nd owner and been cut and pieced wiring.

ebay and if you cant find one, you can make your own using the old connector assuming the connector is not damaged.

HI I have a 2011 trx420fpa it goes in to gear hard and while going in automatic it will jump from second into fourth or fifth?? what is possibly wrong. HELP!

Change your oil and make sure you use what honda recommends it sounds like your transmission is slipping (probably due to lack of oil)

I change starter,starter motor, solenoid angle sensor and it won't shift from first to second could it be the speed sensor

could be ecm follow manuals diagnostic procedures in the hondamatic section (should be the last section of the manual)

I HAVE A 2004 TRX400FGA HONDA WHEN I PUT SHIFTER IN REVERSE THE REVERSE LIGHT COMES ON BUT IT JUMPS NOT WANTING TO GO BACKWARDS , ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUES FOR A FIX THANKS. RAY

Had the same issue. disconnect the reverse shift sensor going into the gear selector on the side of the engine, you will no longer see the reverse light on when in reverse but it won't bog anymore. Problem solved, cheers.

Mitchell Mccormick mine was my angle sensor and make sure to load it correctly because after 300 miles again mine just went out or a different problem so not sure this time. I need to check in service manual again or anyone know what 5 blinks is or is that angle sensor again
