How to Repair Plastic Trim on BMW E93 Convertible Plastic Trim Repair Restoration

We saved a good amount of coins but lost little time. I spend 5 hours on that fix, now it's your decision to do or not to do! Good Luck!

I fixed mine by scraping off the remaining bits of the original mounting tabs on the bottom of the cover, then using epoxy to glue on small plastic picture hooks facing outward from each of the two pins on the hinge that have the original torsion springs. I then used 7/16" x 1" tension springs between the pins on the hinge and the hooks in a V shape from each pin. This solution does the same thing as the original overly complex design, and it cost me $12 including epoxy and springs. It holds the cover to the spring, but allows it to move away slightly when the hinge goes down into the channel in the roof, and holds the cover in alignment with the channel. The whole job took under an hour (plus 24 hours for the epoxy to dry).

unfortunately car is sold. for the spring, it's non removable part, you can replace the whole piece, for the clips, I think you can manage that, it's easy enough to figerout. good luck!

Feel like it’s a due time to have those trim broken. Mine just felt of 1 week ago. Your video come out just right time. I don’t know why this part is soooo expensive

OEM piece is no longer available because of factory stop production back in 2014 or 15. Some people use 3D printers for those parts.

I looked everywhere and glad to how found your video. I have the 2008 E93 (Same color as yours). a piece of the track that you use the bracket to clip into broke off I am trying to use Loctite to glue a new OEM bracket to it. Once glued I'll have to slip the metal spring into it and then reattach the other spring end to the functional bracket and clip. Hoping it works... if not, I may need to take the whole trim piece off and use plastic weld and shape it to fit all clip in. Great vid though!

Need info on replacing the springs on the roof. The plastic piece is in tack, but the clamp is broken and the spring is over extended.

Try to bend the spring back, otherwise you’ll need to replace the whole arm.

Hi Thank you for the video. the middle plastic trim (right Side) has broken today but i couldn't fix it the way you did it. it is very difficult to find the broken piece alone as BMW sell the set of 6 pieces all together and very expensive which is non sense. I am still looking for one everywhere online/offline. BTW my car is 4 series convertible

Thank goodness for you and your videos. Any chance you have (or can link) me to instructions to remove the middle trim piece? I'm paranoid I'll break even more parts trying to take it off. I unclip the remaining (unbroken clips) but I don't know how to slide the spring out of them (or if you're even supposed to do it like that) so that it releases the actual plastic molding piece.

The black plastic plugs with clip in the middle you have to remove them to be able remove the plastic and relish the spring. When i was removing my, i did break more of those foots that I glued back, so good luck with that, the piece extremely fragile.

The plastic is pretty vulnerable to UV and aging, as for the treatment, not sure… fragile plastic is a problem. As what to do with it, it would be nice if someone could 3d print it.

3M Headliner & Fabric Adhesive, 38808 i did use that one, for simple job it work just fine, but for more tricky liner it's not always the best choice, you have to follow the direction step-by-step to get the best resaults!

Thanks for the video! What are thoughts on purchasing these trim covers off ali express? It’s too expensive getting it from bmw themselves. did you have experience with the springs being uncoiled? If so how to recoil them. And finally how would you paint these trim covers to match car colour?

If you can find it on aliexpres then do it. not sure about dealer, I only been to one bmw dealership, and they couldn't order it. Out of Stock. Recoil springs... I seen one person drilling out rivet and getting there a custom rivet. it's something similar: welderseries.com/store/Threaded-Tube-5-8-OD-x-2-Long-3-8-16-p51163075 Otherwise the whole arm have to be replaced. for paint, every car have paint code, check online how to locate it, or go here: www.mdecoder.com/ type the vin, and it will show you the paint code. You can get paint from CarQuest, they will mix it and can put it in the spray can. or it's a small piece, so if you have no experience in painting, just take it to the shop, along with paint code, it probably be like $100. Sorry to comment on so many of your videos but I'm wondering what the area underneath the plastic trim is called with the springs? on my e93 m3 the springs on one side are all screwed up and even damaged the paint. I just want to search for the part but struggling with that.

Yeah, I had exactly same problem, I’m more then sure you can’t buy those springs separately, I’ll look it up tomorrow for the specific name, but in short the whole arm is and assembly. So that’s makes this part so annoying.

So the rear trim peace just attached back to the roof? No glue or 3m needed? That's the only broken part on mines I don't want to take it off just yet.

Yes, the very last piece of that plastic trim is just on clamps, should be simply lifted, also in my case looks like the gasket around was melted and that's why i used the blade to remove it, or previous owner just used some glue to pop it back, either way it's extremely fragile, so be careful and good luck!

Hey! I have this exact problem with my car, but a little while ago I removed the spring that holds the bracket & the plastic strip together because if squeaked when I drove. Do you know the part number for the spring by any chance?

The answer for this question is that you can not replace the spring itself, unless you make it custom, the other solution is to replace the arm.

Is it safe to drop the top with one trim broken ? The long one to be exact. I’ve ordered my parts but couldn’t wait to open the roof 😭

It's kind of safe. I had a couple of scratches from the spring that was holding the plastic trim, you can use electric tape to fix it to the frame, but besides that, you should be fine, except for the portion with cut-out for that little moving piece, just be careful with it as well! The trim is only for protecting the hinges or moving parts from the dust and rain.

Basically, I will get all the negative comments about e93 Roof and cover all topics in one video, such as of how to install the roof trim, how. to readjust the roof, roof stuck open, and more.
