How to replace a 2005 Nissan Xterra Oil Pressure Sensor with common tools

I am not a mechanic, but my oil pressure sensor on my 2005 Nissan Xterra went bad, so I needed to fix it. I couldn't find any videos that showed me everything I wanted to see, so I thought I'd make this video for other folks in the same situation. I tried to cover all bases in the video, but I'm sure there's some things I forgot.
Keep in mind, I am NOT a mechanic, so please seek a professional mechanics help if you can afford to, and if not, please read up the Nissan Service Manual and watch other videos on how to do this in addition to watching this. Also, if you decide to jack up the car, please do not rely on my instructions on how to do it; rather, watch other videos and look in the Nissan owners manual / service manual for the best instructions.
Speaking of which, I highly recommend that you DO NOT jack up the vehicle for this repair. I only did it to make it easier to film, and give me a bit more room under the vehicle.
Also, I mentioned in the video that you need the 3-prong connector for the 2005 Nissan Xterra. This may or may not be true. I needed the 3-prong connector. But your vehicle may be different, so I suggest that BEFORE you buy a new sensor, you crawl under your vehicle, disconnect the wiring harness and see what kind of sensor you need. The big-name auto retailers list a part for about $20.00 that has a square connector and one pin as "fitting my vehicle." I bought that originally, only to discover it was the wrong part. They also listed the rectangle shape with the 3-prongs as "fitting my vehicle" for about $60.00, and that IS the correct part. I'm not sure why they list both parts as "fitting my vehicle," but perhaps the former part fits on some Xterras and the latter just happens to be the right one for mine. So please, check your connection before buying the part.
Finally, I am not making any money by doing this or any other videos. I have no links leading you to products pages. I am not endorsing any particular brand or retailer. I am doing this only to help folks out. So please keep that in mind before posting negative comments.Thanks.

Just did my 05 Xterra in the freezing cold in about 1/2 hours using Channel locks. No jack needed. Thanks for the video.

Nice job man. I have done all the work on my Xterra myself and always think, afterward, "I should have made a video of that"...forget to every time. Glad there are those of you out there who do make the videos.

Thanks for the perfect video. If you have common sense, problem solving skills, and can translate repairs from the brain to the hands using tools, then you are a mechanic. There are a lot of mechanics that are not mechanics lol

Thanks man...my channel locks wouldn't fit due to the pressure hoses that run in front. However, after loosening just one small bolt that holds the tubes in place, I was able to tightly fit in an adjustable wrench. Tip: if using adjustable wrench, set your size by placing on the new sensor, then tape the adjustable wheel (I used duct tape) - so it won't open the wrench while going in and out.

Funny from Elk COunty PA have a spectre which u have a video on and had an xterrra with it as well dont anymore but your spectre vid so far has pointed me in the right direction i do all my own work but always using videos to see the details and make sure i am unbolting what i should be and no extra or under amounts of work! GOing to see if ur spectre video works when i get home from work ! I will update a comment! THanks AGain either way! APpreciate ya!

Also helpful to do this during an oil change. Drain your engine oil like normal, then remove and replace the sensor. Just be sure to fill oil back up before running your engine to check for leaks. 😃

Thanks for the video. You definitely don't live in the northern states. No real rust, nice and clean. My 2006 Frontier...well...has seen a lot of winters with all that salt on the roads.

Thanks for Video, I now have an idea what might be wrong with my 05 Xterra. That being said I was however disappointed you didn't start it and visually show the gauge working as it normally would.

I "think" you just needed to add some threadlocker (blue one) to prevent the leaking on the old sensor. It acts as a sealant and high quality joint.

You did good for not being a mechanic, the only thing I'd really say is... where you jacked up the truck, and the bars you showed to put the jack stands under, those are supports/braces and not intended to support the weight of the truck. Go in with your jack behind the front tires and find the furthest forward point of the frame and jack it up and support it there. And obviously the channel locks made me cringe a little but they got the job done and not everyone has a full set of professional tools so no big deal there.

And thanks for the video, I'm a mechanic of 20 years and believe it or not I use youtube a lot to find shortcuts that Alldata and Mitchell don't show. Also the diagrams showing locations of sensors etc really suck sometimes so I come here and you guys make my job easier.

Yeah, I would definitely not recommend putting jack stands on those braces. Put them on the frame...much more substantial. That made me cringe also. Been a mechanic for 25 years and always look for the frame or lift points to support the vehicle weight

Thank you for the video. I don’t have any room to work with loosening the sensor. I need a different tool. Thanks to others for commenting where the stands should go. I will put them on the frame next time. Lastly I have been driving with the sensor bad for a few months. Does it hurt anything other than not giving me the right reading. I will get the right tool and change it soon

Hi Mike, I drove with a bad sensor for over a year and had no problems except a little oil leaking. Just make sure to check your oil frequently and refill as needed.

Gotta learn how to use those channel locks. The teeth are angled a certain way to catch what you are turning.

The cheaper sensor are for vehicles without a gauge just a light with are other Nissan models on the xterra, frontier and pathfinder with the gauge y ou need the more expensive sensor

Thanks for the helpful video. I was able to switch out my sensor with no problem however afterwards I noticed the oil light comes on whenever the vehicle is stopped. There was no light prior to the repair so does that mean I did something wrong?

No, it sounds like a bad sensor. Did you get it on Ebay? Some of those have problems like what you're describing.

My pathfinder r51 2007 4wd 4.0 engine has oil pressure switch with one wire only

2005 to mid 2006 they had an actual sensor. After that time, Nissan had too many complaints so they went to a one wire light sensor. The gauge is a dummy on new vehicles.

I got it on Ebay for about $10 - BUT - it already went bad. So no link, sorry. I have to do this job all over again, so this time I will go to the dealer and pay the $85 to get the OEM part that hopefully will last longer instead of the cheap Chinese crap sold on Ebay.

my oil cooler were you screw the oil filter on there is a O ring behind it that is leaking oil now on mine

Yea, that's a common issue with this model - but a completely separate problem from this sensor. But I know exactly what you are talking about because the same thing happened to my Xterra. The O-ring is only about 5 -10 bucks, it just takes time to get to it. There's lots of videos on You Tube how to replace it. Otherwise, you can always pay the dealer about $200 to replace it.
