In this video I show you how to replace a bad turnout on your model railroad layout for more reliable operation. Turnouts get damaged and wear out over time. Here is how I replaced a bad turnout in my main yard ladder on my #model #railroad #layout. #turnout

Nice video Ron. I also use the Peco insulfrog points and have found that if you use insulated track joiners on the two small inside rails after the frog you will reduce to zero the short circuit that can happen from time to time when a Loco wheel picks the point. Good points and a quality product from PECO. Once again thank you Ron. Neil W

Awesome vid! Love the bent rail for joiners.... I have been using that Atlas tool, and it works great, but, not useful in all areas, like what you had to do, my fingers say thank you! Oh man that would be such a PITA ,I really really hope I never have to do that (although I did have to add a turnout to my layout because I forgot to add one ,but not too big a deal) but this seems like a nightmare ,and moreso if you had all your track already ballasted.I like the idea of heating the joiners and track to remove them, good idea.Sorry to see that piece of track pull out of the turnout ,surprised you didn`t snap and drop a few F bombs and have to "BLEEP" the audio..LOL You are a patient man Ron !! I just built one of those bent rail joiner tools you have....bloody brilliant ! Love the videos of course ,always fun to watch and always learn new stuff.THANKS for taking the time to do so !! Paul T

This really isn't too bad a job, especially if the turnout you are replacing is NOT in a yard ladder or connected directly to other turnouts. Even removing ballast isn't so bad, and if the new ballast doesn't match perfectly it will look all the more prototypical. That incident probably wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been filming and had a camera in my way. LOL.

Good show Ron, track maintenance is a bear, especially on track tha has been down for some time. I like using just a little white glue to hold track down.. easy to use and a little water soften it so you can remove track even with ballast, then idea with the bent rail is a good hint, thanks, I'll use that in the future....thanks for sharing 😀

Ooops hit the > button while I was reviewing. Dropper wires can be soldered to the bottom of the Fishplates and pushed small holes drilled through the board and fed through the hole making them pretty well invisible from above. For running to the Panel I like to have the Baseboard Edge have Electrical Trunking mounted on. The wires can then be fed to this direct from the Track and passed into the trunking through another small hole. This also means that little wiring except direct from the Fishplate to the trunking is used. Plus any alterations additions are so much easier to deal with at the front of the Layout. Another Tip, use a slightly larger size of Trunking than you think you need. Leaves room for updates! Dunnyrail

Hey Ron something I wanted pass on as suggestion for Removing Rail try using some heavy sewing thread I've use it allot when removing KATO Unitrack and the thread can cut rather Quickly but I also have a flat trial as you have in Video.. Also I think when a person has lots a Track and fairly Good size Yard invest in a Desodering Tool a Desodering tool pulls up the Soder via trigger in the Handle and usually leave 0 on the project your working I've seen em' being used and there pretty Cool..

Soldering Rail,Contacts is pretty much a no no, but it can be useful. You do just do one on each side of the rail with a different side each end pretty much as Made Up Track is supplied from shops. This gives you some of the advantage but saves issues from expanding rail in a warm space. Next for power particularly with DCC use Drop Wires and hook all the Wires from the Rails up for each Section. Bit of a pain I know but reliability makes it worthwhile.

Just a tip with how you solder there, lay down some wide masking tape gently along your "good" track to cover it while you solder and maybe lay your wrist on the track. This protects the track from oils from your skin corroding them over time, protect from scratch damage from watches/jewellery too. Plus when soldering its common to get "spatter" where the flux can spit and bubble like frying chips causing tiny droplets of flux and molten solder to get sprayed around. Its just a simple preventetive measure to protect the track you aren't working on and reduce overall maintenance time. Would I be correct in saying your little flux tube is "Realistic" brand with a red cap? Its my favourite solder and works so nicely, lasts forever too from the golden age of solder when the word "lead" didn't have people fleeing for the hills. :) thanks for the handy video!
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. Good tip on the tape. I don't think I've ever really had that issue, but I can certainly see how that can happen and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. On the flux--no, mine is from Radio Shack with a black cap, but it is possible they are made by the same manufacturer. Min has lasted over 20 years, but sadly it is nearly gone and I can't get this exact stuff anymore.

Hi Ron. Loved your video and I will defo be using your tips to r’n’r a dodgy point on my Hornby layout. The only bit I didn’t get was why you took the ties away from the points rather than the surrounding track. Would it not be easier to take it away from the surrounding track?

I don't solder rail joiners for turnouts. This makes replacing turnouts much easier and safer. I find the adhesive solidly holds the turnout in place. Code 80 track? Insulfrogs" Bad Ron, bad bad Ron! I'm so disappointed. LOL Electrofrogs will improve conductivity and reduce the need to solder rail joiners. Your videos are informative, entertaining, and very well produced. And a little delay in uploading for the sake of well produced videos doesn't bother me one bit.
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jerry. I used inslufrogs on this layout because it is all manually thrown. Without switch machines, I didn't want to mess with wiring the frogs. So far the insulfrogs have caused me little problem. As for code 80, that was a cost issue. I am currently working on a new switching layout that is using code 55 rail.
@jerrysmith1929
@jerrysmith1929 6 жыл бұрын
There is a difference in cost between code 55 and 80. By manually thrown I'm guessing you're using the finger flicking method to change routing. Definitely another way to save costs.

As you well know, I am not really into the trains themselves, but I find myself watching your videos all the way to the end. It's fascinating how complex this is. We all (non-model-railroaders) think it's just slapping some train tracks down and off you go. Was the old track warped from excessive heat? I didn't quite understand what caused the irregular turn/wobble.
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, apparently when I soldered the turnout originally I got it too hot on this rail and melted the ties where it was mounted and it twisted. There is no fix for that. If you like the complexity, wait until I talk about Digital Command Control and the onboard decoders (tiny computers basically) that make these trains run.

sometimes turnouts get damaged and you have to replace them. I have replaced a lot on my layout. One tip you should know is if you are going to cut a turnout away from the layout cut two ties from the turnout in each direction and never cut on a curve or a joint if it is soldered you will damage your track and you have to cut out everything if you do that. Curved turnouts act as a spring if you cut them and you are not on a straight section the track will bow and it will cave in towards the center and pop out of the ties. If you are cutting a curved turnout always cut it straight.

Interesting that you use Peco - and Code 80 insulfrogs. I use Code 55 and Electrofrogs myself. I was also intrigued that you solder the rail joiners. I assume for electrical conductivity in place of a million and one droppers? I wouldn't be soldering near turnouts again after the fun you had!
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 6 жыл бұрын
As I replied in another comment, I used insulfrogs and code 80 on this layout as a cost-saving measure. At the time I started building I wasn't in a place to put switch machines on all of my 100+ turnouts nor to absorb the extra cost of smaller rail. I am working on a new switching layout which is code 55.

I have just started my new dream layout and in my last layout, I soldered the joints. This was the biggest pain of my life. I am visually impaired and am an N scaler. I am trying solder glue I bought on Amazon and so far it appears to be working for me. I have laid over 80 feet of track and 15 turnouts and electrically it seem to be doing well with my test runs. Have you ever tried anything like this? My layout will end up with over 1000 feet of track and I wanted to try this before I had that nightmare of soldering.
