Just a tip from a plumber, before disposing of the drum trap, always break them open, i've found many cool items, including jewelry inside of these and house traps.

I wasn't so lucky. Mine had quite a bit of liquid mercury which spilled all over the rough wood subfloor. The shiny beads went everywhere and kept sub dividing into smaller and smaller beads as I attempted to clean them up. Nasty stuff that can release toxic mercury vapor years. It had probably been in that drum trap since the 1950s when some idiot poured it down the drain after breaking a mercury filled thermometer.

@@madcowusa4277 Hopefully, you never have to deal with mercury again. However, dealing with spilled mercury is not that difficult. You sprinkle powdered sulfur on it. A chemical reaction occurs that results in mercuric sulfide, which is among the MOST insoluble substances around. Boiling concentrated nitric acid will not attack mercuric sulfide.

@jasexavier
@jasexavier 3 жыл бұрын
If your cover has a lip that extends past the drum, the best way to remove it is with a cold chisel and a big hammer. Drive the chisel into the lip counterclockwise, the impact helps to break things loose. You'll probably have to repeat it multiple times around the circumference before it lets go. If you put a new cover on, a wrap of teflon tape will make the job easier the next time. If you have a cover like the one in the video, you might still get it out with a chisel, in pieces.
@Pro1er
@Pro1er 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasexavier The cap does not have a lip, only a square nut. I have a jetter with a very small head but even that won't make the 90s. I used acid to clean the drain and it's been working good for a few years now.

If you mean how high it will sit? Assuming you have no clogs the water level will sit just at the bottom of where the water exits the pipe at the top. Water will also sit at that exact same elevation in the pipe leading to your shower drain. If you have a clog, that's a different story.

You left the section of pipe in the vent drain tee after you cut out the drum trap and didn't remove it! Lazy

Is it on a concrete slab? If so, you will have to pull the tub or shower then dig it up to replace the trap.

So was the whole reason for doing this the "scum" reason & easier clean out ? was there a sediment build up problem that warranted this & do you now build an access panel for future accessibility ?
@ammerconsulting
@ammerconsulting 6 жыл бұрын
Drum traps worked, but they also collected sediment. The more modern P-Trap is pretty much self-cleaning. An access panel is not necessary, because if there is a clog in the future, you can run a snake through the drain above. You cannot run a snake through a drum trap.

@calebburns4346

I never herd that. Ive used pipe dope for years on pvc, cast iron, brass, copper and haven't had any issues. In fact ive stopped using thread tape and have switched to pipe dope for most things that aren't pressurized

Old school pipe dope has mineral oils that'll break down the plastic. This kind tends to be grey to greyish-black in color and reeks of oil. Newer stuff is PTFE based, and won't affect plastics. Oatey Great White and Rectorseal no. 55 both come to mind, as does Blue Monster's pie dope.
