How To Replace a Broken Mail Box Post (at no cost!)

Күн бұрынI didn't want to rent a post-hole digger because I knew I would have to call 411 and get permission before I dig, so instead I wanted to pull out the old post and just reuse the existing hole. This video shows how I did it.
Be advised, while this method didn't cost me any money (aside from putting a gift card in the mailbox with a note that says "sorry") it did take about 3 hours from start to finish. My guess is that a factory finished post would be a lot easier to pull out of the ground (this post had knobs that gave it more friction to work against me pulling it out).

I'm giving you a "like" just because the video was funny, included original music and because you looked about as lost as I've been trying to figure out how to get a cemented post out of a damned hole. I wound up using an auger bit to break up the concrete into chunks (which was pretty brittle due to a wet climate) and it finally came out.

What I learned from this is that if my mailbox post breaks, I should move to an apartment building. Since my mailbox post just broke (and my neighbors did, so we're guessing a snow plow's mirror took them out, but there are problems with that theory. It might remain an Unsolved Mystery), I'll be going through apartment listings! Great video!

@@SpiritofaHandyman Yes! As I walked out to my car to go check out an apartment, I took a moment while the car was warming up to look at the post. I was hoping moving into an apartment was maybe over-reacting. That post is in the ground tight, like frozen tight. I have a solution in mind, using angle irons as splints and putting it aback together as the break in the post is midway up the post. But that will probably not work and it's apartment life for me again. (also, I don't know which I like more, the video or the people who clearly didn't get it)

I am glad I saw this video. I just ordered a new mailbox and post to replace the existing mailbox and post for more cosmetics reason only. Originally I thought about doing the work ourselves you definitely changed my mind especially since wet cement was poured around the post for stability. I'm not even going to attempt to remove it.

The video thumbnail shows you laying on the ground, knocked out cold. Pulling posts or stumps can be risky. I'm glad you were able to get proper medical attn. and then complete the job.

I would use a floor jack but what if you have a metel post bracket that goes 2 feet into the ground? And is rusted ?

I would have dug a hole along side & installed another pressure treated four by four coated with tar or whatever. But it was a great video you have done. BTW, if anyone ever knocked down my mailbox, like a snow plow, I would install a metal I beam in the ground with concrete. Nothing would ever knock that over. Of course, it would tear off the snow plow of the truck & I would get sued! :)
