How to Replace a Faulty Indicator Stick - Toyota Wish

Tools Required:
- A Philips Head Screwdriver
- New Indicator Stick unit (this video shows the replacement of the right hand side stick)
The Problem:
Earlier in the year, the headlight started taking a second or two to turn on after I turned the switch. After some time, it got increasingly difficult to turn on the headlight light and there was an unnerving electrical arching sound coming from behind my steering wheel. This hinted that the headlight switch contacts may be worn.
Bought a new right hand side indicator stick unit for SG$50 from Min Ghee Auto Pte Ltd (Singapore). Absolutely love Toyota's thoughtful design that allows for easy maintenance. It took me less than 10 minutes to replace the turn signal / headlight switch indicator unit on my 2009 Toyota Wish.
I'm pleased to say that the steering wheel and airbag do not need to be removed in order to access the indicator stick unit. Only 3 Philips screws are holding on to the plastic trim surrounding the indicator stick and the plastic trim can be popped off easily.
The indicator stick is only held by a tab, which can be pushed in to release the indicator stick.
Bonus: If you need to get your headlight switch working while waiting for your replacement part to arrive, clean up the contacts and use a rubber band to help push the contacts firmly together. This should work as a temporary fix until either the rubber band disintegrates or your new part arrives!

Thanks for your video. My indicator stick on my 2001 Corolla hatchback suddenly started making a burning plastic/ozone smell and the right indicator was stuck on regardless of indicator stick position when the engine was started. Unfortunately, it happened late on a Friday night so I had to get the tow truck to bring it to my place rather than a mechanic. A mobile mechanic said he couldn't fix it for about 5 days because the car parts stores were closed. However, I saw your video and Saturday morning, I found the same model car at a wreckers on Facebook marketplace and they let me remove the part for $50 Aud. Thanks to your instructions, I was able to replace the indicator by Saturday afternoon and it's working perfectly fine now 😀. Note: in my car there's a 4th screw on the right side of the top panel around the steeing column which stops it being removed. It's accessible from the underside but you can't get to it until the bottom panel is removed. Removing this screw and also the black plastic ring around the ignition (after unplugging its switch and removing its 1 screw) made it possible to get the top panel off. My car had about 3 to 4 screws holding the indicator unit to a plastic support so it was necessary to remove the top panel completely to get to them. Also, I found it useful to use a small plastic box with compartments so the screws are sorted in the order they were removed.

Thanks for this video and it's description, I gave a thumbs up. I'm in Australia and have a 2003 (July 2003 build) Toyota Echo hatchback with the same problem. Like you, before the [low-beam] headlights completely failed to turn on, I also experienced a delay and/or arching sound when turning on the switch and sometimes I had to turn it off then back on to get it to work. So, I think I also need to change the entire switch stick. However, even though I cannot get my [low-beam] headlights to come on anymore, I can still pull & hold the entire switch stick toward me to get my high-beams to flash. However, if I push & lock the entire switch stick forward while the [low-beam] headlight switch is on, the high-beams do not come on. Do you remember if that was also the case when you had this issue?

Yes, sounds like you are having the same problem as me. Changing the stick should solve it. Meanwhile, you can try to clean the contacts as an interim solution.
