I installed a Goodman 5 ton split system 18 years ago and its still working great. I ran the line set, built the plenum... installed all new duct work. The only thing I did not do was braze the line set and charge they system. *** NOTE *** It took several phone calls before some one would come and braze line and charge system because I installed the system myself. The business that did come out made it clear that if the system did not work it would be time and materials to fix. The service guy charged the system, looked around, asked a few questions and said I did a very good job and that he would hire me if I was looking for work.

Nice!! Yea it might take some time to get the right one man show hvac guy to do it, but even if you decided to do that yourself, I’m sure you would have done an awesome job. I’m going to be doing some videos on alternatives to brazing, like the push to connect fittings by zoomlock, and then using staybrite 8 solder. It requires a lot less heat, so no nitrogen flow is required, and you don’t have to lug around two tanks on every install.

Don't forget, pressure testing and using a vacuum pump on the lineset down to 500 microns is a must or you are potentially wasting your money then spending more for repairs. If a homeowner is going to install anything themselves, stick to furnaces. Coils and condensers (central air systems) are a bit more involved than just plug and play.
@diyhvacguy

@@thinkingofausernamehurtsmyhead absolutely. If a homeowner is willing to purchase the right tools for the job he can still accomplish profession results. @@thinkingofausernamehurtsmyhead In 18 years the only failure with the entire split system was the $15 furnace igniter that I replaced. I would install my own HVAC again and more than likely have an HVAC company charge the AC again.

You can totally install yourself. But I advise people to really make sure that they know what they're doing before they start it. I am just learning this under a plumbing, Heat, AC, gas, company rightnow. I was working with a gas fitter today. I installed a Carrier furnace. He had me doing the gas connections fittings and he would check on me. And I was extremely nervous. I was double checking and triple checking my connections. Testing for leaks. But I guess he said I did a really good job, because all of the gas lines were run perfectly he said. The job entailed that I had to remove the hot water tank in order to even get the furnace out because space was so tight.But I did a lot of it by myself for the first time. He was obviously monitoring, as it's the law in Canada, and I can't be working on gas lines without a red seal gas fitter with me, But I pretty much did it on my own and that was the goal today. I feel good. He was mostly doing the cutting of the sheet metal for the vents, and electrical today and not me, because he said that part had to be perfect. I'm learning a lot. And it feels good.

That’s awesome man! Glad you are learning the trade. It’s definitely an awesome one to get into. I’m definitely learning new things too from people on here who have been in the field longer. Thank you, your videos helped me a lot. I put in a new Goodman furnace this year before the cold hit. On another topic: REPAIRS::I did find out that should there be a problem where I need to call a technician, it costs $145 for them to just show up which could rack ups hefty bill. And some people can’t afford the repair side either. I think it would be wise to design a system where you have 2 identical furnaces hooked up and ready to go in case #1 furnace has issues, you could turn off power to #1 and turn power on to #2,, then go back to bed, knowing your family is safe and warm. You can then fix #1 later and not have to pay ridiculous $145 labor rates.

Your customer got the Goodman GM9s801005cn 100,000 BTU, 80% furnace, I bought the 80,000 BTU 96% to replace the 35 year old Lenox 100,000 BTU G11-e which was 80% and also took it's combustion air from the room which was a pain, the old flue used to sometimes push cold air down depending on wind, so I think what I have now is so much better- taking it's air from outside, and 16% more efficient. My NW Iowa house is about 1,100 sq ft but I have R100 in the attic, all double glas windows, and the walls are at least R21 as I added 2" of celotex on the inside over the old plaster and lath exterior walls, and sheeted with 1/2" CDX topped with 1/2" sheetrock. It was down in the teens recently and the Goodman is working fine, it doesn't seem to need to come on a lot or frequently to hold the temperature right on 73 degrees

My two cents: I will avoid EMC blower. It is too expensive to repair. For 1100sq ft and high insulation. You need about 50-60KBTU. If you have 2stage 95% PSC 70KBTU, will do fine and may run in first stage most of the time. I have 1600Sqft raised ranch in upstate NY with GMV95 70K two stage which hardly go to 2nd stage and can bring up house temp up two degree in 8 or 9 minutes. On 10F outside temp cold night my furnace turn on every 20 min for 8 min and always stay in first stage i.e. 55K BTU. Leaking condensate water from the plastic cover is a common problem with the Goodman 95% gas furnace.

@@McLivin410 funny you should ask. I just got my duct cleaning equipment in, you could duplicate what I have, somewhat, with a shop vac, and a compressor. If you have those two things you be ups make it work. The way it works is you start with each supply vent and you run your air hose down all the way, and then it has an air ball that pushes air toward the direction you are pulling it back, and then you have your vacuum at the floor vent to suck all the garbage and dust out. You do that for each vent, and then for the supply you turn the fan on and blow it toward the furnace, and the air filter catches everything, so when you are done with all the returns, you shut the fan off, and vacuum out where the filter was and replace with a new one. Pretty easy. I will have a video coming out very soon that explains this whole process so stay tuned! Cheers

@@diyhvacguy One of the things I've heard mentioned in several other furnace vids is the life of the furnace depends more on the quality of the install rather than the brand, but they never really specifically define what they mean by that. Maybe a few videos expanding on what makes a high quality furnace install with all the i's dotted and t's crossed that shows what details some people might use to cut corners and how to do it exactly right.

At the beginning of the install you turned the furnace of by the switch. I thought you need to close the gas valve first, wait a few minutes and then turn off the furnace by the switch. Correct me if I’m wrong it might only be for when you are servicing a unit and not replacing one.

Yeah it's easy enough, I always do my own work on everything, I replaced my 35 year old Lenox G11-e that I installed myself 18 years ago in my house that never had central heat or ducts, this time around I decided on a Goodman 80,000 BTU furnace, it was $1600, delivered fast, and I decided to put it in a more central location and run all new ducts- getting rid of the old 6" round stuff. My mistake on the Lenox was I figured two 6" round ducts were enough for the cold air return, while it worked fine trouble free for 18 years I decided to go considerably larger this time with two 8x16 returns to oppside ends of the house using the cavity a couple of former doorways that were moved provided in the walls to use. I also added an outside air electric damper to bring in fresh outside air, and unlike the Lenox the Goodman takes its combustion air from outside, so that meant running a couple of 2" PVC pipes. The biggest problem was the 8x16 and other sized ducts, Menards had SOME, HD had SOME, what I needed for some vertical elbows to go around a support, the plenum and return air box, and some other pieces were all special order with 2-3 week wait. I needed to make a small change and yep, the duct take offs and whatnot were special order, 2-3 weeks more wait time... I located a GOOD, well made filter rack on another site- Chad Vincent, BLG2-1625-3 Furnace Filter Rack 16x25 $85.99 it arrived in good shape, nice thick metal, with a spring loaded gasketed door on the side edge to access the filters. I was able to fit two 1" filters in it, a merv 11 filter and a cheaper one in front of it. I had to extend my basement gas line- removing the "leg" that went to the Lenox, adding a valve and flexible connector with the new safety cut-off in it, run a new electric line, and did both myself. Happy so far! One other issue I ran into, the drain Goodman has is a rubber hose you connect to a black pastic fitting that has a 45 degree angle barb and a straight round outlet, the maual etc didn't say a word about what fitting to use to exit that black barb connector that comes thru the cabinet, I even took it to the hardware store and we couldnt find anything that either inserted in or over the end of it, I couldnt even find photos showing what is used because those i found either had a connection for a pump which I didnt need, or the furnace wasnt connected in the photo, I knew i needed an open Tee and a barb to a hose but, eventually I found out that black fitting takes 1/2" PVC pipe glued into it, geez! could have had that in the install manual... so I glued in a short stub and a Tee, a barb and ran clear 5/8" hose to the floor drain. I do prefer to raise the furnace up off the floor, I did with 4 concrete blocks, never know if water might come in, and you dont want the furnace sitting in a few inches of water! Thankfully I don't have a stupid air conditioner coil to contend with and complicate things with freon lines, condensors and all that rubber, so it was just a straight furnace replacement, for air conditioning I'm considering a couple of mini splits to put in next spring.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
Yea mini splits are great. I’ll be doing some installation videos for mini splits soon so stay tuned for that! They are the way of the future I think. Much less space and quiet. They do require maintenance which alot of people don’t realize. Less filtration, so the fan wheel gets plugged up pretty quick.

Thanks for the great video. I’m gettin. Ready to tackle this and am a pretty competent DIYer. Could you answer a question: Mechanically, the process looks straight forward. I’m wondering about sizing my furnace. My current furnace was undersized when I bought the house. It’s 45k BTU, the house is about 1500 sq ft, poorly insulated, has old windows and I live in the north. The house was a duplex when I bought it and I converted it back to a single family. Now this furnace can’t keep the 1st floor above 50 degrees in the winter running constantly and set to max. My question is- I found an 80k that will fit in the space and attach to the plenum very easily. How much do I have to think about gas supply. I’m only supply this, a 40 gallon water heater, and a gas stove. Should I be ok? Also- the manual has a start-up procedure that references measuring the pressure and adjusting the valve. This seems technical. I’m wondering if that’s a fine tuning adjustment and if I’m likely fine with factory settings. Long comment. Thanks for the feedback and great videos!
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! Yea you will be fine using the existing 1/2'' gas line. As long as you have sufficient return air you will be fine, I have upped many furnaces and have yet to run into one where the air flow inhibited it from working like it should. On the gas pressure, people on here are constantly criticizing my install videos for not showing the gas pressure check procedure but I have yet to have a Goodman unit that was way off out of the box. If you know which furnace you want, send me a link to the one you are ordering and I can send you an affiliate link for the same exact product. It gives me a little commission and helps me out a bit :) Anyways, if email is better and you have more questions, my email is stojicrepair@gmail.com Cheers!

You’ll probably delete my comment but here goes. You have not done a load calculation so you don’t know if the new furnace or old furnace was right size. You have not done a static pressure test. Most newer furnaces need more return air. You have not checked heat rise. You did not check gas pressure. You did not do a combustion analysis. You did not verify or adjust fan speed to meat condenser tonnage. You are right that it could be done by a homeowner because they’re human just like hvac pros. But to get it installed correctly you need a manometer and combustion analyses . Buying these makes zero sense because it would cost more than paying an hvac company. Also in the real world furnaces don’t fit flush, they need transitions and people don’t have sheet metal tools or knowledge of making transitions. Goodman does sell to homeowners through online store and they are the worse rated equipment manufacturer. Coincidence? Or are they getting the bad reputation because of improperly installed equipment like you’re promoting?
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment but how does buying a furnace from Amazon or hvac direct make zero sense since it would be more? I had a customer quoted 20k for a new system last week. That is egregious. I’ll admit when I got started I didn’t check gas pressure but I check gas pressure every time now, and I haven’t seen a single one that was way off out of the box. And these furnaces do not require as many procedures and tests that the “hvac pros” claim they do with every replacement in order to function properly. They have several safety features like the rollout switches, limit switches etc. As far as Goodman’s product, why are they ranked as #3 best hvac manufacturers in 2022? You can say all you want but the proof is in the pudding my man.
@joeburner7120
@joeburner7120 Жыл бұрын
@@diyhvacguy Goodman #3? Probably in sales but not in quality. You can find what you like if you seek it. It’s called confirmation bias and google will get you there. You make statement about the high limit? That’s the point. The furnace should not get hot enough to trip it. Those limits are set like 150-180 degrees. An average furnace has heat rise of about 50 degrees. With a typical return at 72 degrees, you should have supply air at 122 degrees (well below the limit switch setting) If it’s tripping, you got issues. Heat exchangers are not meant to work at that extreme heat. In most states, you would fail by running flex into a cabinet. How are you directing you DIYers to ensure their exhaust is adequate? In my state, you could not pass inspection with this shit install. They also require combustion analysis report to be onsite before they pass. It would cost the homeowners more money to correct your errors and to make repairs on a low quality install than paying an HVAC company. And you use crazy comparisons like $6000 furnaces. No, fact is, most HVAC companies will install an 80% furnace like Goodman for about $2500- $3000 all in. You are better off making videos about how it’s cheaper to cook eggs at home than going to Denny’s.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Жыл бұрын
@@joeburner7120 thanks for that. There is NOT A SINGLE company, especially here in Utah that will replace a furnace for that amount. Let me clerify, there is not a single company that will do it for 2500-3000 and check everything you mentioned. Yes, I know now the flex is against code and have corrected that on all future installs but is it going to explode? Absolutely not. And let’s be real here, if someone wants to replace their furnace they probably aren’t pulling a permit, they accept the risk of replacing it. I’m simply giving them some confidence in doing it. I get it though, you are like every other “hvac pro” and you’d hate to lose some business because a homeowner wants to fry their eggs at home instead of go to Dennys 👍🏽

You will spend more time at home depot then you will spend installing the furnace. A guy with a stocked truck will spend 4 to 6 hours it will take you 2 days with part run. The plus side you can save $2,000.00 doing it yourself so them two days will be well worth it.

I wouldn't dare try this in Texas. In the summer you'll roast and in the winter you'll freeze. You also don't have a truck full of parts that you're going to need like the pros have. Then its a dang trip to Lowes or Home Depot every couple of hours. Even if you do a good job of preparing you're going to forget something and that parts truck will be something you'll wish you had. If and when you finish you'll swear you'd never do it again.

So much if this is not true. I’ve personally helped dozens of people tackle this project and they couldn’t be happier. Good research and preparedness is key, especially if Home Depot or Lowe’s aren’t close by, but most DIYers have things in their home. Think about the savings here too, In Utah it’s about 10k on average to have a system replaced. The equipment is 4000 so even if some trips are involved we are taking about a savings of 6000 dollars! This may not be the case for you, but the average American has to work a long time to make 6000. Don’t get me wrong, if you don’t have the confidence and mechanical skill, I DO NOT recommend this, but if you do, I say go for it. This is not a diss, just a question since I’m not as familiar with furnaces. With that being said, I’m fairly knowledgeable within these types of machines since I’m a steam/hydronic boiler contractor in CA. Anyways my question is, do you not have tune air and gas pressures to achieve a satisfactory emissions? Or even to check that the pressures are setting are correct? This could have been done off camera I suppose. However, I didn’t see you fiddle with the gas valve at all. My main concern is telling weekend warriors that changing out a furnace is as easy as 1, 2, 3, and then having them flood their house with carbon monoxide because they actually have no idea what they’re doing.
@diyhvacguy

Hey thanks for the question. The biggest thing is just making sure making sure the gas supply does not have leaks. The furnaces have safety festures, IE rollout switches and limit switches, and flame sensor, so the reality is they are very safe right out of the box. Every home should have a CO detector, that goes beyond having a profession install or not. There should be CO testers on every floor, and 10 ft or less from every sleeping quarters. As far as the gas pressure, I haven’t seen a single gas valve that was way out of spec, but yes I always check the gas pressure and static pressure now, and I learn something new with each install. Thanks for the question. Dave

I might have got it fixed idk but i fear the heat exchangers are rusting so its all just time .. but I am thinking its not a bad idea to prepare for this.. guess I will need a vaccum compressor.. have gauges but their from automotive might not work.. then i have to find out how I can get a bottle of nitrogen.. living somewhat rural not a lot of options for that.. might have to pay a tech to do the evac but that will cost less than a full install .. Goodman seems like a good company too.. most of their stuff is made in America.. well you know not all but there is a tour of their plant and they make all the coils and burners and cases so its cool .. better than Carrier ... thanks for posting the videos.. you make it look easy and I know when you run into trouble its not easy for a first timer but its also not impossible. And it can save you a lot of money. I figure the savings will go into a higher seer rating and maybe another ton of cooling capacity :o)

Yea this one didn’t need much duct work modification, but tape is your friend. So many people are agains it but it’s just great. Make sure and squeegee it out and it will stay stuck. So you register the equipment using the serial number, and if there is an issue you call the dealer you purchased the equipment from and bring back the defective part to exchange it. On the ac side of things, I will have a full ac install video coming out next month so make sure and subscribe to the channel. You can get adapters to adapt the automotive pump for residential fittings. You don’t necessarily need nitrogen, people back in the day never used that. Brazing the lines in is a bit technical so maybe you could have a company do that portion and vacuuming it. If you have more questions feel free to message me on Instagram! Cheers
