My takeaway from this video is to pull the engine and work it on an engine stand. I'd say you were super patient with this project. Great video!

Yes, I should have just pulled the darn thing out the first time. But me being pig headed, I was bound and determined to show how it can be done while in the vehicle. But in doing so took three times longer than it needed to be!

I'm actually about to tear town a 2000 2.7L 4runner. Thanks for posting this. I was kind of at the mindset of pulling the whole motor, and this kind of solidified it for me. My fat hands and arms need more room than allotted to us lol. Thanks again for sharing your journey.

OMG 😵‍💫 I have a 97 taco 2.7l ext cab, head gasket just blew out yesterday, had to get a wrecker to tow it home. for the past 3 months i have been restoring it after sitting for 3 years. rear bumper to front grille and i mean everything, new rotors brakes, ball joints, complete new AC system, belts, 3in lift in the back 2in in the front, led tail lights,and headlights, touchscreen stereo with back-up camera. couple thousand dollars at this point, after watching your video dont know if i want to take this any further !!..has almost 300,000 miles on it now. might be easier to just replace the engine at $2600.00 thanks for posting this video, now its decision time for me.

Good job! There's another issue that appears on used cars; same as my 99 t.t.

Dude... my hats off to you for being so patient, damn I would have been throwing stuff around. Have a 99 Taco with 225k on it and the valve covers leaking, lower timing cover seals leaking as well. I was thinking of just pulling the motor and doing everything at once, seems like an easier option. After watching your issues maybe I should just trade and get a new truck. What a bitch motor to work on!!!

It's a breeze to do it outside. Sometimes trying to take a shortcut actually prolongs the job.

I had to do the head gasket on my ‘98 hilux (3rzfe) and on first start up it had similar symptoms. Checked over the grounding and found that the rear grounding strap was loose (between the block and firewall). Made sure it was nice and snug and she hasn’t skipped a beat since. I wonder if there might have been a ground lead that you put together a bit loose the first time and on the second round it got tightened properly?

Why would you need to take the timing cover off unless your doing it for timing ?
@BentOaksGarage
@BentOaksGarage 3 ай бұрын
Just double checking the timing, When the vehicle does not act right, you back track all your steps and timing was one of the most obvious steps that could go wrong.

I’ll never have customers supply parts regardless if it’s cheaper for them. Places I get my parts from pay me warranty if something doesn’t work. I always let my customer know that. If they supply parts, I’ll tell them I can’t warranty the work and they’ll have to pay for the job again if the parts fail. I’ve had my fair share of customers supplying the wrong parts and making me wait along with holding my stall up. So I tell them in advance the price will increase if that’s the case.

This was by far the worst timing job I ever had to do. Normally, I estimate between 10 to 12 hours on the safe side for a timing job (twin over head cam, four cylinder). So this one definitely kicked my butt. However, knowing what I had to do and what to expect, I can price accordingly and get it done in half the time.

Brother, new gasket so small hole for coolant way. Is it okey or wrong?. Block and head normal size hole.
@BentOaksGarage
@BentOaksGarage Жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, most head gaskets that I have replaced recently have hole reductions in the gasket. I'm not sure why, but from what I've seen, it is common.
