Master electrician Heath Eastman helps a homeowner replace his lamppost that is not exactly to code.
To start, it is a mailbox post, not even a lamppost. The top is wide open to water infiltrations, only held down by a zip tie. It also uses a voltage way too high to use for residential outdoor usage. All in all, it’s an electrician’s nightmare.

Where to find it?
Lampposts usually come in at least two pieces: the post, and the lantern. In this case, Heath installed a Hammond Lantern Post with Sign Bracket for the post and a Jefferson Post Mount Lantern for the lantern. This particular post was designed with a hanging sign in mind, which can be custom ordered separately. All of these items are manufactured by Walpole Outdoors (www.walpoleout....
To safely extend the UF cable, Heath decided to install an outdoor-rated receptacle [amzn.to/3cQLXdp], wire it with the UF cable, and then run a new cable from the receptacle to the lantern. He protected the receptacle using an Expandable Weatherproof In-Use Cover [amzn.to/36GDqWh], which is manufactured by TayMac (www.hubbell.co....

For those who might not know, UF cable may look like Romex (NM cable) on the outside but has a very different sheathing that's made for direct burial and being exposed to water. I say this because I've actually seen people bury Romex or put it in a pipe in a wet location. Overall, he did a good job with what he had to work with here. Now days with low voltage LED lights being so bright, most landscape lighting is done with Low voltage.

If you know what are you doing. i installed many outlets and switches and i always look how to videos so i will have a idea how to do it properly. In video we will able to learn more better than reading electrical code.

I've got one of those in my yard, and it has never worked since we bought the house. There's no switches anywhere that turn it on or off, there's nothing marked in the breaker panel for it, and yet, there are wires in the post! How do I "trace" those wires back inside the house to find out where they go? Do I need to just replace everything from scratch, and treat it like a new install?
@AStanton1966
@AStanton1966 Жыл бұрын
For about $15 they make a tool that detects electrical current just by being near it. Get on your cell phone with another person at your breaker box and have them turn each breaker off individually. Then let them know when they hit the right one. If you had an outlet attached, you could play a radio with loud volume. Then, listening to the radio, you could switch each breaker off and listen for the radio to die.

I was wondering why they didn't use cement when they put the post in the ground, seems like it wouldn't be sturdy enough?
@matthewjurkiewicz
@matthewjurkiewicz 3 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing since it is hollow plastic and supports zero weight, if it got hit by a plow or branch it would snap in half if it were in cement. Being just in dirt, it might survive by bending over. Also, it does make it much easier to replace or move if you need to.
